Hi Atl98! Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia.
Be our guest at the Teahouse! The Teahouse is a friendly space where new editors can ask questions about contributing to Wikipedia and get help from experienced editors like ChamithN (talk).

We hope to see you there!

Welcome

[edit]

Hello Atl98 and welcome to Wikipedia! We appreciate encyclopedic contributions, but some of your contributions, such as the ones to HIV/AIDS, do not conform to our policies. For more information on this, see Wikipedia's policies on vandalism and limits on acceptable additions. If you'd like to experiment with the wiki's syntax, please do so in the sandbox rather than in articles.

If you still have questions, there is a new contributors' help page, or you can click here to ask for help on your talk page, and a volunteer should respond shortly. You may also find the following pages useful for a general introduction to Wikipedia.

I hope you enjoy editing and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. Feel free to write a note on the bottom of my talk page if you want to get in touch with me. Again, welcome! Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 03:37, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Stop icon
You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for violating copyright policy by copying text or images into Wikipedia from another source without evidence of permission. Please take this opportunity to ensure that you understand our copyright policy and our policies regarding how to use non-free content.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  MER-C 19:08, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

I now understand why I was blocked and I will not use copyrighted material again without permission from the copyright holder.

Decline reason:

In order to lift the block, we need to be certain that you understand how copyright works on Wikipedia. To allow the reviewing administrator to assess your understanding, please respond to the following questions in your next unblock appeal, explaining in your own words:

  • What is copyright?
  • How is Wikipedia licenced?
  • Why is copyrighted content not allowed on Wikipedia?
  • Under what circumstances can we use copyrighted content?
  • How do you intend to avoid violating the copyright policy in the future?

Your answers will enable us to establish whether or not you should be unblocked. Yamla (talk) 21:02, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

{{unblock|reason=Copyright is protection granted by the government for written works and other media.

Copyrighted content is not allowed on Wikipedia because one must get the permission of the copyright owner before using the material.

We can use copyrighted content if we obtain the permission of the copyright owner.

To avoid violating the copyright policy, I will not use copyrighted content while editing.}}

No, the above is insufficient. You've missed all of WP:FAIRUSE. --Yamla (talk) 10:41, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Oops, sorry about that. Non-free content can be used in articles if it is considered fair use under US copyright law and meets the criteria for non-free content (which stipulate that there must be no free equivalent content, respect for commercial opportunities, minimal usage, meets Wikipedia's content standards and media-specific policy, and used in at least one article. It also requires non-free content to have contextual significance, that it must only be used in articles and article namespaces, and, in image or media pages, identification of the source, a copyright tag, and the name of each article in which fair use is claimed and a separate, specific rationale for the non-free use of the item.) Non-free content must not be used if free material is available or may be created, and non-free content must have a valid rationale for why it should be considered fair use under Wikipedia policy and US law.

Accept reason:

With the consent of the blocking admin and because you answered our questions, I have lifted your block. Sorry for the delay, this had dropped off my watchlist. Yamla (talk) 17:34, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MER-C: I'm okay with these answers. As blocking admin, do you have any remaining concerns? --Yamla (talk) 16:57, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is one thing missing - how do you tell whether something (let's say a web page) is copyrighted and therefore cannot copy from it? If this question is answered satisfactorily, then I have no objection to unblocking. MER-C 17:00, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

{{unblock|reason= One can tell if a webpage is copyrighted if there is a copyright notice. This notice is usually at the bottom of a webpage.}}

This is not accurate. --Yamla (talk) 17:17, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

{{unblock|reason= My mistake. One should assume that all content on the Internet is copyrighted unless it is otherwise indicated. The only material that is free to use without permission is public domain, and all works in the public domain are indicated as such. }}

I have disabled the unblock requests as only one unblock request is needed. Also please sign your posts with four tildes. like so ~~~~. Tknifton (talk) 22:45, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
