Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Education in Spokane, Washington may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "{}"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

My mistake, I chose the wrong reason[edit]

Hello Barb, at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Bicycle Alliance of Washington my hand slipped and I accidentally chose "vandalism" rather than "better sourcing of WP:Notability needed" as the reason for declining the draft.

Totally my mistake, sorry for any confusion. If you can firm up the sourcing and hit Resubmit, we can move on to the next review of the draft. Apologies for my slipup. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:04, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Compare our page to comparable pages for other organizations?[edit]

Matthew, in searching Wikipedia I find several pages for organizations that are peer organizations for the Bicycle Alliance: BTA Oregon, Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, and Cascade Bicycle Club among them. I also found a WikiProject Cycling initiative intended to improve the coverage of cycling on Wikipedia; the BTA Oregon has a page noting that it fits into that and I hadn't realized it existed before I started the Bicycle Alliance page or I would have joined that first.

The Bicycle Alliance of WA entry has more external references cited than any of the examples I've noted here. Some of the sources are smaller-scale bike club newsletters because that's who cared the most about the day-to-day efforts to get a bill passed.

I looked at the peer organization entries as a model before starting the Bicycle Alliance page. In evaluating their use of references I see that, for example, the Cascade entry makes a statement with no external sourcing: "From 2009-2011 the club successfully lobbied for a law to increase penalties for negligent drivers who injured or killed vulnerable users of the road, including bicyclists and pedestrians. The club found that under state law, drivers were fined as low as $42. A version of the Vulnerable User Bill passed in 2011 with wide bipartisan support. The bill increased mandatory fines, but allowed the fines to be reduced by a judge, who could proscribe driver safety education and community service." They state that their efforts passed the law (and they were indeed the lead advocacy organization on that one) but they don't provide any external proof of the assertion. If it's okay to state something without a reference and my references aren't strong enough I could just delete them, but that doesn't seem to fit the intent of quality standards.

I'm admittedly doing online research rather than going to the library to find old news articles that are print-only but it would help to know just how much more sourcing is needed or what "better sourcing" means, specifically. That's a very general standard to try to meet and I want to do a good job.

Thanks for the help/feedback and for doing what you do to make Wikipedia a resource I consult at least once almost every day, I think! BarbChamberlain (talk) 05:06, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
