[edit]Hello Cfr1980. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Cfr1980. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Cfr1980|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. S0091 (talk) 15:56, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi S0091, thank you for your help and for comming back to me so soon. I will not try to edit further until I understand you correctly.
- I am not paid to edit this page, but as I answered in the questions to create the article, I am in relation to the topic (I work in the company and it pays my normal salary). Since our company has a 100-year history this year, I find it strange that people should not find us on Wikipedia in the same way as they can find Lerøy, Mowi, Austevoll Seafood or Grieg Seafood among Category:Seafood companies of Norway. I am not looking to promote our companys products, just to state the facts and the story of the company. Is the only way to get the same exposure or an article together with the rest of the Norwegian seafood companies on wikipedia to change my user to a paid user? I'm not familiar with coding and English is not my first language, so please excuse me if I don't understand you or the terms correctly. Cfr1980 (talk) 19:20, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Cfr1980, see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. One should be careful with comparing to existing articles because standards have changed overtime, generally becoming more strict, and even today things get by when they should not. As far as Paid, being an employee even if not compensated specifically to edit Wikipedia meets the criteria so you need make the appropriate declaration on your User page (User:Cfr1980). See the above instructions. Being "paid" does not preclude you from continuing to work on or submitting the draft but declaring is required.
- As I am sure you understand, "getting exposure" is not the purpose of Wikipedia as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a marketing website or social media, etc. Per my previous guidance, read though WP:NCORP. The best advice I can give is to stick with mainstream publications, like newspapers, that have written about the company, not interviews or content that is largely what the company says about itself. Independent coverage is needed and some of that coverage needs to outside the local area (regional or national coverage). Though English is preferred, sources can be in a different language. And I agree, a hundred year old company should have coverage that meets the criteria but it may take some digging to find them even through historical archives.
