Abraham Cohen of Zante

[edit]

I'm kinda curious as to why you listed Abraham Cohen of Zante as a Greek rabbi. Ethnically he was Jewish, he was educated in a Venetian town (Padua), and worked in a Venetian town Zante. Sure Zante is an Ionian island, but there was no Greece, as such, and the upper classes didn't speak Greek when he was a rabbi there. --Bejnar (talk) 04:35, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Please do not add religion, ethnic, or descent categories or information to biography articles without first ensuring that 1) the category is supported by reliably sourced article content and 2) the individual identifies as such. I will be reviewing the category edits you have made and removing any that do not meet Wikipedia policy. Please see WP:BLPCAT and WP:EGRS for additional information.--Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 21:15, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Chaim: The policy on Wikipedia is to list articles under subcategories wherever possible. Thus, Ezra Attiya would not be listed under the broader, supracategory of Category:Syrian Jews when there is a subcategory available, Category:Syrian emigrants to Israel. Similarly, David Rebibo would not be listed under Category:Moroccan Jews when there is a subcategory, Category:Moroccan emigrants to the United States. You might want to click on the category pages to see if there is subcategorization before you add new categories to an article. Best, Yoninah (talk) 09:30, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Chaim—WP:BLPCAT and WP:EGRS refer to Categorization. Please consider the following excerpt from policy:
"Category names do not carry disclaimers or modifiers, so the case for each content category must be made clear by the article text and its reliable sources. Categories regarding religious beliefs or sexual orientation should not be used unless the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief or orientation in question, and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to their public life or notability, according to reliable published sources."[1]
The above policy wording expresses that self-identification is a prerequisite to Categorization by religious belief or sexual orientation. The reason given is that Categories do not allow for disclaimers and modifiers.
The more expansive space of the body of an article, unlike the more constricted space of a Category name, does allow for disclaimers and modifiers. Therefore self-identification is not required in the body of an article for religious belief or sexual orientation. Obviously reliable sourcing remains a requirement. Chaim1995, you are still adding EGRS categories to articles where the categories are not supported by sourced article content (I've reverted two and have not yet checked your contributions for others). Please don't continue to do this - Wikipedia's WP:BLP policy is very strict and there is little to no leeway to disregard its requirements. Again, review WP:BLPCAT and WP:EGRS and if the biography subject's religion or ethnicity is not supported by reliably sourced article content do not add it. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 01:05, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

John Houseman

[edit]

What useful purpose did you hope to serve by making your deletions from the article about John Houseman?
Do you disagree with those classifications or descriptions?
If so, how and why?
Maybe we and others should discuss that on the talk page for the article in question.
Thanks.
Doc.
