Hi there! When creating my page Violet Lim, I did refer to the guidelines for creating articles, and I'm not sure which of the policies I'm flouting. If you could let me know what exactly is the problem, I'll be glad to amend it so that the page stays up. Thank you in advance! Cheriefoo123 (talk) 10:11, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- The message that Masum Ibn Musa posted here was certainly not very helpful, as it gave no indication whatever what he or she thought was wrong with the article. I suggest that Masum Ibn Musa might like to consider carefully how to be more helpful when posting such messages in future, particularly to new editors who are unlikely to have any idea what sort of problems there may be. However, one very important problem was copyright, as the article was largely constructed from bits and pieces copied from other web sites and assembled together. It is rarely acceptable to copy content from other sources and post it into Wikipedia pages, and for this reason the article has been deleted. I may also mention that the article was not written in the sort of neutral tone that is required for Wikipedia, but gave the general impression that it was written to promote Violet Lim, and although it was not so extremely promotional as to have justified immediate deletion, had the copyright issue not been present, it is likely that such writing would at best have been heavily cut and edited to remove the promotional tone, and possible that it might even have been nominated for possible deletion.
- My advice to new editors is that it is best to start by making small improvements to existing articles, rather than creating new articles. That way any mistakes you make (which you will, because we all do) will be small ones, and you won't have the discouraging experience of repeatedly seeing hours of work deleted. Gradually, you will get to learn how Wikipedia works, and after a while you will know enough about what is acceptable to be able to write whole new articles without fear that they will be deleted. Over the years I have found that editors who start by making small changes to existing articles and work up from there have a far better chance of having a successful time here than those who jump right into creating new articles from the start. - Copying a passage and making minor changes in wording while still remaining sufficiently close to the original that it is clear that the copy is essentially derived from that original does not avoid liability under copyright law. For example, making changes such as replacing "during her stint at the bank" with "during her stint at Citibank", "upon further investigation" with "upon further observation", and "she realised" with "Violet came to realise" does not in any way change the fact that the passage in question was essentially a copy. You may find it helpful to read Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 15:44, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of ESynchrony
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on ESynchrony, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
- It appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Cheriefoo123. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, please:
- avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your circle, your organization, its competitors, projects or products;
- instead propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you.
Proposed deletion of Violet Lim
[edit]The article Violet Lim has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- The article is about a person with questionable notability (fails WP:BIO). The person seems to be known only for creating a dating service. Although references can be found, most references about her just contain trivial mentions (usually a quote) in local media. In addition, this article seems to have been created by someone connected to the subject representing a potential conflict of interest. A previous article with this name was deleted before
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Lemongirl942 (talk) 04:53, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
