I'm a keen Wikipedian and would be very pleased and excited if somebody could give me tips on doing lots of good edits! Will someone help get me started with regular tips on editing and info on the joining the CVU/Task Force; I would like to help fight vandalism, but I need somebody to 'push me off' as it were!?helpme Thanks, Chilliaphenia!

You might consider adoption. For vandal fighting, you should enable Twinkle and Friendly in your user preferences (under "gadgets"). Of course, you should also consider getting involved in content work, such as expanding articles. Have fun!  fetchcomms 19:27, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

[edit]
Although some prefer welcoming newcomers with cookies, I find fruit to be a healthier alternative.

Welcome to Wikipedia, Chilliaphenia! I am Fetchcomms and I have been editing Wikipedia for some time. I just wanted to say "Hi!" and welcome you to Wikipedia! If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page or by typing helpme at the bottom of this page. Don't be afraid to leave a message! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some important pages that you might find helpful:

But don't forget to:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Oh, and when you post on talk pages you should always sign your name using four tildes (~~~~); that should automatically produce your username and the date after your post (AKA your signature). If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, visit the help chat, or place helpme on your talk page and ask your question there. Again, welcome!  fetchcomms 19:27, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you might want to just explore around a bit, but you can join the CVU whenever you want, and begin reverting vandalism right away!.  fetchcomms 19:43, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

helpme

How can I create my own Wiki signature? Thanks, Chilliaphenia (talk) 19:44, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Go to here and in the middle of the page, insert the code you want to appear.  fetchcomms 19:49, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To Fetchcomms, I mean like yours, you can put a hand in your signature box, and people have multicoloured backgrounds, and cool fonts. How can you personalise it like yours? helpme Chilliaphenia (talk) 19:56, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I see. Well, that is Wikicode... It might take some time to learn it, but it is similar to html. if you look at my code, <span style="border:1px solid;"><span style="color:black;"> fetch</span>'<span style="color:black;">comms</span><span style="color:black;">☛</span></span>, you might have an idea of what it looks like. Feel free to test at the sandbox though!  fetchcomms 20:00, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Edit conflict (me and Fetch edited at same time)...
When you see a signature on some talk-page similiar to what you would like also, edit the page/view the page source code. You can see there how the signature was made... For example, if you have a look at this page's code, you can see that my signature is made by following code: <span style="padding:1px;font-size:11px;border-radius: 1em; -moz-border-radius: 1em; -webkit-border-radius: 1em;<!-- -->;background-color:blue;border: 1px solid red;"><span style="border-radius: 1em; -moz-border-radius: 1em; -webkit-border-radius: 1em;<!-- -->;color:white; padding:1px;font-size:11px;background-color:darkblue"> <b>Ilyushka88</b> </span></span><tt><small>Talk to me</tt></small> Hope this helps -  Ilyushka88 Talk to me 20:03, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Admin?

[edit]

What is ADMINSHIP, and how do you be one? helpme Chilliaphenia (talk) 20:17, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship is a position where experienced users are given permission to different tools in order to further benefit our community. Adminship is granted through WP:RFA, where others comment on the user in question. Generally, one must be well versed in our policies, guidelines, and have a wide variety of edits throughout Wikipedia. For more info, see WP:ADMIN.  fetchcomms 20:21, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, what do you have to do to become one of these 'Administrators' and how? helpme Chilliaphenia (talk) 12:08, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

you should get nominated or nominate yourself to be one at WP:RFA. Then people will vote if you should become one. Administrators usually have large amounts of experience and thousands of edits, so I recommend you to familiarize yourself with wikipedia and get more experience before trying. Please see WP:NOTNOW.  Ilyushka88 Talk to me 12:49, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you only get one chance to be an administrator or if you fail once you've blown your chances? {{helpme} Chilliaphenia (talk) 13:20, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to try again later. Many admins have failed their RFA before, but still have succeeded later. Ilyushka88 Talk to me 13:24, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please read over WP:ADMIN, --Coffee // have a cup // ark // 13:25, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't tried yet. But if I do how many edits do I need? helpmeChilliaphenia (talk) 13:29, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is no rules on how many edits you need, but usually applications fail if the user has less than few thousand edits.  Ilyushka88 Talk to me 13:32, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A few thousand! I'll be a bot soon! (JOKE!) Ok, seriously, that's lots!

Userboxes

[edit]

Please can someone send me a list of links that are userboxes I might be able to use? helpme Thanks, Chilliaphenia (talk) 13:41, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Gallery.  Ilyushka88 Talk to me 13:44, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks. Chilliaphenia (talk) 13:45, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please can I have rollback?helpme; I want to dedicate the time I spend on Wikipedia to fighting vandalism because I belive Wikipedia should be vandal free and I want to contribute to that. Chilliaphenia (talk) 15:01, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can add your request for rollback rights in Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Rollback. Before you request the rights, I suggest you to read WP:RBK.  Ilyushka88 Talk to me 15:05, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)Eventually. Before granting rollback permissions, we usually like to see some anti-vandal work. Looking at your edits, I see that you've just joined the project, and have yet to really get started with your goal of vandal-fighting. Your enthusiasm is appreciated! But have a go at editing articles (and vandal-fighting) without rollback first, to show others that you're clear on how such tasks are done. Adding to Ilyushka88's comments, WP:RBK has some good advice, as well. Best, UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 15:08, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal Fighting

[edit]

Sure. The thing to remember is that our goal as editors isn't to pwn the vandals, but to build a quality encyclopedia. There are two places you might want to start off looking at. The first is Recent Changes, which literally lists the most recent edits. You can filter that list to remove bots, anonympus editors, or registered editors, remove minor edits, and so forth. It's live, so refreshing the page will offer a new set of recent changes. Bold numbers in green or red indicate, respectively, that a large number of characters were added (green) or removed (red). You can also show edits that trigger the edit filter, such as this one that lists "new article with no mention of title or normal opening sentence". Look at some of the edits that are made, in general - and particularly look at some of the edits that are reverting vandalism (normally noted with a "RV" in the edit summary) - that'll give you a good feel for what to look for. Good luck! UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 15:25, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I want to fight vandals, but I don't know how! How can I?helpme Thanks, Chilliaphenia (talk) 15:17, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CUV would be a great place to start. it has a lot of information on how to clean vandalism.  Ilyushka88 Talk to me 15:21, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gadgets

[edit]

What gadgets do I have to enable / disable to warn vandals? helpme Chilliaphenia (talk) 15:39, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Click on the "My preferences" link at very top of this page, then click on "gadgets" and you will find a list of gadgets available to users. Replace the helpme template if you need more help finding the gadgets; if you find them ok, let me know on my talk page. Cheers! Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a Talkback message on my talk page. 15:45, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS...Be sure you use any gadgets you install wisely, as you are responsible for all edits you make with them, and misconduct using them can get you blocked. If you are in doubt, don't act. Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a Talkback message on my talk page. 15:46, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Never Vandalise

[edit]

Ok, just for future reference, I won't vandalise! Which gadgets do I need to install to use them? Chilliaphenia (talk) 15:53, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I recommend Twinkle. Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a Talkback message on my talk page. 16:13, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Userboxes 2

[edit]

How do I get a userbox that tells people weather or not I'm online? Chilliaphenia (talk) 16:15, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can use Qui and make a userbox that checks /Status, if you install Qui according to that guide and don't know how to make the userbox yourself, drop me a message and I'll do it for you. :) Chris Rocen (talk) 16:27, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cool! Thanks so much! Chilliaphenia (talk) 16:33, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

Er, yes... Thank you, and I hope you start reverting vandals soon.  fetchcomms 17:08, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, he isn't really a huge vandal or sock... see WP:LTA.  fetchcomms 17:30, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, no need to use the talkback template unless you are replying here, rather than at my own page.  fetchcomms 21:11, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly belive this is unjustified: I am new I do not know how to vandalise! What's a sockerpuppet?
