I appreciate your invitation to work with you on improving the articles relating to York County, South Carolina, and really hate to pass up the opportunity to work with a curmudgeon. License tagging for Image:Ralphnorman.jpg

Vandalism warnings (to other user)

You said: "I just issued a 4th level warning for vandalism to User:68.4.18.69. While the user only had two previous vandalism warning tags, other users had left warnings in their own words, so I figured despite the lack of a tag, those should count. Furthermore (this is the reason I'm writing you specifically), you yourself already temporarily banned this user for blatant copyright violations. Do warnings need to be the official tags to count? Should I have delivered a 3rd level warning in this case? I just want to make sure I was doing this according to protocol. Thanks so much for your help!"

No, hand-written warnings definitely count. Furthermore, even without hand-written warnings, you are allowed to skip the templates (e.g. go from test-n to test3-n) if the vandalism is bad. --Yamla 20:49, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Fred Phelps

Regarding your source for the info, I'm looking at the date on it and it's dated after Wikipedia started disseminating that information. Is it not possible Wikipedia is the source for that article's content, and that it is not a reliable source? I'm not going to blind revert, but I think it's a point we need to consider here. Good eye! I was trying to find something quickly, and I should have paid closer attention. I'm going to remove that part again and see if I can't find a more credible source. OK, I think it's fixed now. It wasn't as simple as I first thought, so you may want to check it and perhaps revert it if necessary, but I tested it with NetScape, Opera, Internet Explorer and Firefox and it seemed to work fine.

I am still baffled how the mistake occurred though clearly someone else had already fixed it and I hadnt realised and tried to fix it myself with disastrous consequences. Very irritating when you are trying to do the right thing and end up appearing to do what you hate. While my views on spam may be different from thje mainstream wikipedia view I would never knowingly vandalsie this project and was horrified to see your message this morning. Helpme question

After expanding Jacob Riis from a stub, I've discovered a reliable source that contradicts a fact from another reliable source, specifically Riis's first wife's maiden name. The first source is an article published in a British photographic magazine, and the other is written by the New York Public Library as the official guide to their Jacob Riis Notes collection, which is original documents and correspondence by (or to) Jacob Riis. I've searched for a third source but found nothing. I'm tempted to change the article to reflect the information from the New York Public Library, who, to me, seems the more reliable source. Ideas? Also, since this is one of the first few articles to which I've been doing major revisions, I wouldn't mind if someone took a glance and let me know how it is looking...I don't want a peer review, just a "don't worry, you aren't making a mess" (there are no co-contributors...the page was a stub for a long time before I started). Perhaps you can list both names in the article and state that two separate sources list separate information in a reference by using <ref></ref> and adding a references/footnote section to state the fact that there is contradictory information. The closest that you can get to an official source is if you found the marriage license for the muckraker. Ryūlóng 23:29, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

• Fantastic to hear from you! I've seen little interest in any collaborative efforts with South Carolina pages except one other user whom I recently met, and have been unable to get down to business per se, both because of work in real life and my desire to complete a couple of pages I'd started and had practically finished on paper, but needed to be realized in cyberland. I am quite aware of the need to expand several South Carolina-related articles, particularly for our Congressional delegation. What I would like to see is the three of us actually take over the blank shell that is Wikipedia:WikiProject South Carolina and actually formulate a plan of action. Helpme question

Is it considered in poor judgment to chanllenge the actions of an administrator? I reported someone for having what appears to be a vandalism only account, and the admin who responded said "no recent vandalism" despite the fact it had occurred on the same day and the day before. The account, from what I can see in the history, has never made a constructive edit (after a dozen or so, I stopped checking, but the trend was the same: most edits were to wrestlers' pages adding graphic sexual nonsense). Or does the childish personal attack that they made count as a constructive edit? The administrator's solution was to leave yet another warning (the IP's talk page is nothing but warnings and blocks). Is there some way I can ask that this IP be blocked indefinately? I thought that that administrators were supposed to do that to vandalism only accounts. Chuchunezumi 15:18, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

No, administrators should not be considered a 'class above' other editors. They are simply normal editors who have been given extra responsibilities and powers. Perhaps show a link to the edits where the vandalism occured? —Daniel (‽) 15:22, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Failing my Boton Doro article

I am really offended that you prematurely failed my Boton Doro article. You gave me a hold window of seven days, which would have finished tomorrow. I just spent a considerable amount of time updating the article as you requested, and when I logged onto the discussion page to announce the changes I discovered that you had already failed it.

Why did you establish a deadline you had no intention of keeping? They are ususally established for a reason, and people stick to them for a reason. I budgeted my time over the last week, collecting my sources and giving myself today to update the article in time for the deadline tomorrow.

In the future, if you establish a deadline with someone, stick to it. Don't jump the gun a day early for any reason whatsoever. MightyAtom 05:51, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

• You can be offended all you'd like, but I really couldn't care less. After six days you hadn't made a single change. Seven days is the maximum hold period, not an extension for you personally. When did you budget the time for your article to be reread and critiqued? Or was that not important? Should I have simply failed you outright? Furthermore, you don't get a rebuttal to a pass or fail. If you had put the article up in proper form to be a good article, it would have passed. Do the work next time and it won't be a problem, but don't pester me on my user page because an article fell short. Wikipedia is a collaborative project, and if you had a timeline, you should have been keeping everyone on Wikipedia informed. This is not YOUR article, you are just a major contributor. You may refrain from telling me what I will and will not do in the future, and it is my suggestion you sit back and chill out a bit; if you had a question, you should have responded in good faith, not in a tantrum. I apologize for the personal attack. It was inappropriate, made out of frustration, and had no business being included in my comments. Definitely a lesson learned about wikipedia conduct.

I do hope that you can acknowledge your own inappropriate behavior as well. As a reviewer, you established two measurable criteria, a set of actions to be resolved by a certain calendar date. You did not mention seeing progress by a certain date, or any other criteria.

I accepted and maintained the established measure of success. I delivered the desired results by the established calendar day. This should be a case where there were no problems whatsoever, a true win-win situation.

However, when you failed the article a day early, you broke faith with the agreement that you yourself had established.

If a professor at school had failed my project a day before the established deadline, or if my boss fired me a day before the established deadline on a project, then it would be considered their error and I would have recourse to go over their head or at least enter into a dialog of discussing the issue and hopefully reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement.

However, in an environment of "you don't get a rebuttal to a pass or fail" the editorial team is entirely at the capricious whims of the reviewer.

Obviously, this issue is just lost, with both of us acting poorly. However, in the future, I respectfully request that when you establish a guideline you keep it. In return, I will pledge to cool down.

I've removed the attack part and left a warning for the user in question. Usually the best thing to do is ignore minor attacks as making a big deal of them often just makes things worse, however you can report personal attacks at WP:PAIN --pgk^(talk) 17:59, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
