Paula Bontempi moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Paula Bontempi, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Information icon Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. This is just a note to let you know that I've moved the draft that you were working on to Draft:Clare Reimers, from its old location at User:HillHouseUSA/Clare Reimers. This has been done because the Draft namespace is the preferred location for Articles for Creation submissions. Please feel free to continue to work on it there. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to ask me on my talk page. Thank you. Nathan2055talk - contribs 19:44, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Welcome!

Hello, HillHouseUSA, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! Nathan2055talk - contribs 19:45, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

I am not sure which article raised questions about conflict of interest. I have been careful to not write about people where I would be in conflict. Can you let me know how and what was flagged as a conflict so that I might learn what I should to avoid a conflict of interest? Thanks, I am still learning my way around here. Hi. Please do not use the Daily Mail as you did at Susan E. Parks. It is not a reliable source. See WP:DAILYMAIL. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 08:18, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

My apologies @Robby.is.on: I did not know about the restrictions on the Daily Mail. I have edited the page to reflect that the citations to the Science paper are also appropriate for the statement about sand lance movement due to the whale sounds.

Minor formatting

Hi there, don't forget to remove the code for draft categories when moving to mainspace to tidy them up, plus the EL section should always just be named "External links" and be a bulleted point, as per WP:ELCITE. You might also want to include {{Authority control}} just before the categories, as it saves me a job then. :) Keep up the good work though! -Kj cheetham (talk) 09:15, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

Kj cheetham - yes! Sorry about that. I will add this to my list. I appreciate your help and the tips to make this easier.

Autopatroller?

Hi there, I noticed on https://xtools.wmflabs.org/pages/en.wikipedia.org/DaffodilOcean/all#0 you've already made 25 mainspace articles, which is excellent (though that includes a few disamb pages too).

As you may know, most new articles are reviewed by new page patrollers like myself, but people who have shown they are competent at creating pages can apply for auto-patrolled status, which means that wouldn't need manual reviewing and hence reduces the NPP workload. Once you've had 25 regular articles created in mainspace, which I'm sure won't be far in the future, is applying for auto-patrolled status something you'd be interested in? You seem to already be familar with things like WP:BLP, WP:VER, and WP:NOTE (if not, take a look over those when you get the chance if you'd like).

Of course articles will still get looked at at some point as part of classifying as part of wiki projects, etc. too. -Kj cheetham (talk) 08:32, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

Kj cheetham - I am happy to apply for WP:AUTOPAT once I meet the milestone of 25 regular articles in the mainspace. This status seems like it would be useful for WP:NPP by keeping your task list to a dull roar. You have been very helpful in providing tips where I have missed things, so if I keep those in mind, I think I would be in good shape DaffodilOcean (talk) 10:16, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
I can't see the admins declining it once you eventually apply. :) Keep up the good work! -Kj cheetham (talk) 10:53, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
P.S. I try not to look at the NPP backlog very often!

Category suggestion

Hi there, Just a very minor suggestion - for women scientist bio articles, I'd always try to include a category which includes the word "women", such as "<nationality> women <type of scientist>" ideally, where one exists, or just "women <type of scientist>". Just "Women scientists" itself is too generic though and shouldn't be used. Hope that helps! -Kj cheetham (talk) 09:37, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Kj cheetham I can definitely do that, but I have been avoiding it as it seemed odd. There are no categories for male scientists, just scientists. Hence, why separate out women scientists as a separate group? I say that fully recognizing that I clearly have been focusing on women scientists. However, my goal is to get them on a level playing field where you don't need to specify that they are women.
DaffodilOcean That is a complex answer which I'm not even going to start to get into here as it's been raised in various places elsewhere. I'm coming it at from the angle of the "women scientist" categories exist and hence should be used, especially as a member of WP:WOMENSCI. And if we don't add them to those categories someone else will anyway in due course. I most definitely agree long term should be completely equal, but we're far there yet... and hence there is still some need for extra promotion to even move closer to a roughly level playing field. -Kj cheetham (talk) 14:49, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Kj cheetham OK, fair enough. I will use the categories with "women" in the names, and hope for the day when they can go away. One question, let's use Karen M. Fischer as an example. She's a seismologist, but there is no category for 'women seismologist'. Should I go down the path of starting a new category? Or, use two categories, 'seismologist' and 'women scientists'?
I will also go back and add in the more specific categories as I think I now understand why you had been adding that tag to some of the pages I created. (and I forgot to sign above...sorry) --DaffodilOcean (talk) 18:48, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
DaffodilOcean For that one, is 'women geologist' or 'women geophysicist' a suitable alternative? I don't know the field well enough to say. If not, Wikipedia:Categorization_of_people#Creating_a_new_category has a bit of guidance. Definitely avoid putting individuals in Category:Women_scientists specifically though - would need to fit somewhere in that tree if making a new category. I imagine 'women seismologists' if it was created would fall under Category:Earth scientists? When the time does come to delete a category, bots can automatically sort it all out, so don't have to worry about removing tags from pages manually at least!
If you end up looking more into how categories work more deeply, there's also things like diffusing and non-diffusing categories to be aware of. But if you're not careful you risk ending up with no time to actually write articles, like me. :) Depends how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. -Kj cheetham (talk) 21:05, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Kj cheetham The short answer is - I don't want to go down the category-creating rabbit hole. For the seismologists, I think 'women geologist' works best. As much as possible, I will find suitable alternatives before I start making new categories. Thanks for the ideas and tips. DaffodilOcean (talk) 23:25, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi — I ummed and ahhed about this for a while, but in the end had to decline it, for the reasons given above (in that greenish-greyish field in the middle). I've no other major issues with this article, I think it's quite well written, and if you can work on the notability as per my comments, feel free to ping me when you're done and I'll happily take another look so this doesn't have to languish in the review queue for ages. Any questions or comments, let me know. Best, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:12, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
@DoubleGrazing: Thanks for considering this article, I wondered about deanship. Her college at Oregon State does not have named professors (per criteria #5 at WP:PROF). Hence, I hoped that serving as the dean of the department (and her prior position as director of the Wrigley Institute) would suffice. I will see what more I can find to establish notability. DaffodilOcean (talk) 13:51, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Well, perhaps I ought to clarify my review comments: my interpretation is that deanship isn't inherently notable, because it isn't mentioned in the criteria; could be that it is, but just isn't mentioned! I do agree that deanship and the earlier directorship together may add up to the equivalent of a named chair, or at least something pretty close to that, so in that sense this probably isn't far off. If you can find something to bolster the notability claim, I may be able to approve this. If not, then I can ask another AfC reviewer for second opinion, and if they are happy for it to be published then I certainly won't stand in the way. Cheers, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:30, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
@DoubleGrazing: I took the time to find more news coverage of Marinelli's presence as a leader at Oregon State and University of South Carolina. I also added details on her work at the National Academy of Sciences where she has served on multiple committees addressing questions of interest to marine scientists, and I added details about her publications and research. Can you please use this information to consider if her combination of leadership roles is sufficient to merit a Wikipedia page? Thanks. DaffodilOcean (talk) 13:43, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
I think it's still a bit of a leap of faith, but I'll go ahead, apply a bit of WP:WOMRED magic dust (!), and approve it anyway. I reckon there are worse crimes than publishing an article on a clearly distinguished female academic who may not 100% meet the notability criteria. Best, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 19:13, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
PS: Can you please submit it for review again and let me know? --DoubleGrazing (talk) 19:15, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
@DoubleGrazing: - re-submitted! Thanks for the magic dust. :) DaffodilOcean (talk) 11:05, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi DaffodilOcean, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Chetsford (talk) 06:54, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
