Welcome[edit]

Hi DillyLynn, and welcome to Wikipedia. I can help you with questions about images. Your work taking requested photos is really appreciated; it takes a lot more work than simply sitting at a computer, and has a different skill set, so it's often hard for us to get photos.

Before we can use your photos in articles on Wikipedia, we have to upload them to our servers. There are a couple options:

  1. You can post the images on another webpage, along with a copyright license that allows us to use them. Then inform editors who are interested that they are available. You said you have uploaded them; can you give me a pointer to the website?
  2. You can upload your images onto Wikipedia yourself. The advantage here is that you don't have to wait for anyone else.

Either way, the main thing to know is that we will require the pictures to be under a suitable copyright license. The most common license for photos here is probably "Creative Commons Share-alike with Attribution" [1]. The terms of this license allow others to reuse and edit the photo, but require that you must always be given credit. It also requires that anyone else who uses your image has to release their derivative work under the same terms. Other specific licenses are possible, but all the licenses that Wikipedia accepts have the same general features of allowing reuse and requiring acknowledgement. If you have questions about specific licenses, I can explain more.

I will watch this page, so please feel free to simply respond below. — Carl (CBM · talk) 12:08, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your quick reply. I've already uploaded my photos to commons.wikimedia.org. Here is the URL: http://toolserver.org/~daniel/WikiSense/Gallery.php?wikifam=commons.wikimedia.org&since=&until=&img_user_text=DillyLynn&order=-img_timestamp&max=25&order=-img_timestamp&format=html I wasn't sure whether I could, or should, post them into their respective articles or not.

There are a couple more photos requested by Wikipedia that I can get, too. But I didn't want to pursue it (I spent all day uploading the photos; getting the tags right, etc.) without talking to an editor first.

I'll check back here for your reply, though I'm sure I could find your talk page now.

Yes, you're definitely welcome to post them in their respective articles (particularly if people have requested them). I didn't check whether you had already uploaded them on commons. If you run into any problems, or have any issues, feel free to contact me. I'll also try to check this pag from time to time. — Carl (CBM · talk) 01:53, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I added photos to Emma Wood State Beach just to demonstrate some basic wiki syntax. In general, only one image should go at the top of the article. Once the images are in the articles, other editors can always tweak the layout later. — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:02, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Added your photos[edit]

Thanks for filling out a bunch of those requested photos for Santa Barbara. I've added the rest of the ones you uploaded to their respective articles, and they look great: Gaviota Tunnel, El Capitán State Beach, and Atascadero Creek (Santa Barbara County, California). You can look at the "history" of those pages to see how I did the wiki-syntax (like this edit), and feel free to try out editing articles directly yourself if you want to. If you mess up, it's very easy for somebody else to fix it. Let me know if I can help! Dreamyshade (talk) 21:01, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

External links[edit]

Hi DillyLynn. I believe the website you are adding as an external link does not really satisfy the guidelines for external links (specifically WP:ELNO #1 and #5). In addition, even if the links were appropriate, as you are the author and owner of the website, this would be a conflict of interests, so I think it is more appropriate if you do not add links to it. I do join the other editors in appreciating your other contributions. Best regards. --Muhandes (talk) 13:09, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for setting me straight, Muhandes. I couldn't find any guidelines about posting external links, so I appreciate your pointing them out to me. I definitely do not want to go against the rules, and will stop adding my site to any other wikis. I do have a few more photos to upload, and will do so soon. Thanks again for keeping me honest.
