Re: early settlers in Alachua County

I am quite sure that Americans were moving into what is now Alachua County between 1814 and 1820, but I don't recall seeing any reliable sources that would pin down when and where. Fort Mitchell and the District of Elotchaway were some ways south of the later site of Newnansville, with east of Ocala and Payne's Old Town (very near present-day Micanopy) both proposed as the site. Note 4 in Seminole Wars#District of Elotchaway discusses the location. While the main Alachua Seminole settlement moved southward after the American raids in 1812, the ambush of Buckner Harris, which ended the Elotachaway incursion, shows that the area was still dangerous for whites, and likely remained so for a few more years. Re: Your revert in the Potano article

As I said in the edit summary here, Alachua is not mentioned in connection with the mission in any source that I am aware of. We require that everything in Wikipedia be verifiable from reliable sources. Your personal knowledge does not meet that requirement. Nor may you rely on synthesis of published material to reach a conclusion that is not supported in a reliable source. If you are aware of a reliable source that does say that the mission is located in Alachua, please cite it. Donald Albury 17:51, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It’s not personal knowledge that the Mission is located in the State Park (it’s listed elsewhere in this Wikipedia post, and also the cited reference in the post), and it’s explicitly stated in the Park’s Management Plan that the Mission is located within it. San Felasco Park is not in any way located within Gainesville - as stated, its boundaries are either within Alachua or unincorporated. As I said, it’s the source already cited in the article along with the San Felasco Park Management Plan cited in the Wikipedia entry for the Park (Reference number 3, San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park Unit Management Plan). The specific location of the Mission within the park is discoverable through research but wasn’t desired to be widely disseminated in order to prevent looting (as stated to me from the keeper of the Florida Master Site File). At the end of the day, though, this is really over the top because I simply noted the location is near Alachua AND Gainesville, which doesn’t need additional citation because the existing citation already states the Mission is within San Felasco Park, which is itself…near Alachua and Gainesville.
