Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. It is possible that the bot was mistaken and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

Yes, I requested information and permission from the company, and received this via email. Emitchell62000 (talk) 12:08, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
If it is helpful, the text is also here: https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1175151/000114420411069084/v242754_ex99-1.htm Emitchell62000 (talk) 12:32, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- Okay can you email the permission to be? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:00, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
Certainly. The Wikipedia email doesn't allow attachments; would you like me to send it to a specific address, or just copy-paste it (there were attachments) Emitchell62000 (talk) 21:04, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- Email you. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:23, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
Second issue
[edit]Are you able to also address the FantasticFiction issue detailed above? Emitchell62000 (talk) 21:05, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- Yes so you copied and pasted from the cover of the book? Or what happened? We do not allow copy and pasting from book covers by the way. The text must always be paraphrased. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:24, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
I typed it in from the hardcover copy of the book. I apologize--I'd seen so many other Wikipedia pages that use cover copy, that I assumed it was ok (should have checked!) But it's definitely not copyrighted by FantasticFiction. Emitchell62000 (talk) 21:27, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- It however is copyright by someone. If the author has given release of the text under an open license can you email it to me?
- If you see other pages copying and pasting please point me to them so I can clean them up. Thanks Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 06:39, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
Third issue
[edit]You will need to comply with Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure aswell. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 06:52, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
Hi: I apologize; because I'm blocked, this page is not letting me put comments under specific headings above (using my phone at the moment). I will try to move them to the appropriate section when I get back to the computer.
Second Issue: I need to check, but the copyright to the jacket copy text is held by either the author or the publisher. (Regardless, it is not held by FantastcFiction nor Amazon nor Barnes & Noble nor any other site that uses it to describe any particular book!) This particular text is also on Lisa Unger's website here: http://lisaunger.com/books/ink-and-bone/synopsis/. But no, I did not get specific permission to use it. I can certainly do so, if that is helpful (not sure whether it matters at this point?)
I can definitely begin compiling a list for you; I have not kept one, since I did not realize this was an issue. I assumed the same rules that apply to book cover images applied to the text used. I'm sorry.
I have done paid work for Lisa Unger in the past, but am not doing so for this book. As I understand the paid contributor rules (which might well have changed; I have not rechecked them recently), this would not apply in this case? Regardless, I am now blocked so cannot make any changes to anything save responding to this thread. Should this change, I will go back and check any changes I've made are in accordance with the current policy. Emitchell62000 (talk) 13:30, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
- Okay yes fair use is complicated. While we allow very limited fair use images we do not allow fair use text.
- Can you list below all the articles for which you were paid or had a COI and list who paid you and through what companies those payments occurred. Thanks Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 17:28, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
Understood re fair use. If I'm allowed to participate again, I'll certainly do so being educated about this!
There are three articles that I contributed to that had a relationship with the company I was employed by at the time (I have not worked for them since 2011). The company, RLM Public Relations, paid me. The pages are: IncrediMail, Revolution Money, and Richard Laermer. While I was not paid directly by any of these, Richard Laermer is the CEO of the company. (I doubt this is relevant--because it's a spirit rather than letter of the law thing--but just in case: it was an employee of Wikimedia, which was then still headquartered in St. Petersburg, where I live, who suggested I might have helpful content to contribute. So the impetus wasn't from the client/company.)
There are a number of pages for authors and books that I have contributed to, but I have not been paid to do so. Wikipedia is generally my first stop when I am looking into potential clients, and I've often made changes to pages--or created missing pages--based on other information I've found through this process. I also have a lot of friends who are authors; last month, I attended an event where I took a lot of photos of authors, for example, and I recently uploaded an updated one to a page (it is a photo I took, so the copyright isn't an issue) because the one that was there was many years old. When I have used photos taken by others, I have gotten the appropriate copyright clearance and submitted it through the Wikimedia site.
As I understand it, a COI doesn't exist if changes are made prior to or following the existence of a business relationship. I may we'll be misunderstanding that, though.
I apologize for the length of this--just trying to be thorough! Please let me know if you need any additional information. Emitchell62000 (talk) 20:28, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
- If you are writing the page before they become your client I would still include that as a COI. I would imagine you mention your Wikipedia efforts when you approach them to become a client.
- Also what about "Cytosorbents Corporation". If they are a client of the company you work for that definitely looks like a COI.
- Can you link to the photo you took yourself? I might have tagged it by mistake if that is the case. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:38, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
Ok--the only thing I can do now is respond to this thread, so I can't actually disclose anything (given the understanding I now have of this and other issues, I certainly would if I could).
This is the recent photo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:TwistHeadshot.jpg I believe there are some others, but I would have to check. My only connection to Twist is that she is a friend; it's not a commercial relationship. I don't see anything on the page that would not conform to the neutral point of view. Am I missing something?
Cytosorbents was a client of a company that I have done contract work for; that's how I heard about them first. I don't know whether they are now, but since everything I added to the page is deleted, it seems like that's taken care of? FWIW, the page is woefully incomplete (I tried to post a request for someone to look at this, but I'm also blocked from that).
I very much appreciate the amount of time and effort you have taken to explain these issues to me. Just wanted to mention that. I have never intended to cause problems; going back to when Wikipedia was about creating a "comprehensive collection of all of the knowledge in the world," I was just trying to lend a hand. Emitchell62000 (talk) 22:20, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
- Okay if you took this picture https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TwistHeadshot.jpg no need for the deletion template.
- COI is not just about commercial relationships.
- Not enough of the rest of this adds up unfortunately. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 05:22, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
I'm sorry you feel that way.
I understand that COI is not just about commercial relationships; this is why I mentioned the friendship. I certainly was not trying to do anything nefarious.
So this means I'm number 826?
By the way, the link to an article in one of your references ("Why we should all edit Wikipedia") leads to a page that does not exist. You might want to fix that unless it's deliberate. Emitchell62000 (talk) 12:14, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
- Which link has "Why we should all edit Wikipedia"? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:29, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
I have sent you some additional information via email; if it would more appropriately posted here, please let me know. Emitchell62000 (talk) 13:06, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
- I will review. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:29, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Doc James: - would you object to an unblock? PhilKnight (talk) 23:42, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes have been thinking about the issues in question. I would agree to an unblock along the following lines:
- The user is to always extensively paraphrase going forwards.
- They are to use independent sources (not press releases)
- They are not to edit articles directly when they have a conflict of interest or expect to have a conflict of interest in the future
- Due to their employment they are not to work on medical information.
Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 23:51, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
I'm happy to abide by these conditions, of course.
I missed the note about the article link before; the piece in question is available here: https://ubcmedicaljournal.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/ubcmj_3_1_2011_32-33.pdf. It is referenced here, under Publications: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Doc_James Emitchell62000 (talk) 01:16, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- Perfect. Thank you for your understanding. You are now unblocked. Happy editing :-) Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 01:23, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Lance Edwards moved to draftspace
[edit]An article you recently created, Lance Edwards, is not suitable as written to remain published. It appears there is a WP:UPE or WP:COI conflict. Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, and have addressed the UPE/COI issue, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. As per WP policy, please do not move into mainspace yourself. Onel5969 TT me 15:04, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hello! Thank you for your notes. Regarding your WP:UPE or WP:COI concern, I am not being paid for creating this page, nor do I have a conflict of interest. As you know, this is difficult to prove, but I became aware of Lance Edwards when a friend shared an article with me about his Operation True Potential program because my daughter works in affordable housing. This led me to look into who was behind it; naturally my first stop was Wikipedia. I did fact-check some of the information I found online with the company to be certain it was accurate, and they provided an official bio for Edwards; I had not cited this, but have added this. I have removed the details about his personal life (wife and residences), though, because I could not find a third-party source of this information. I have also added additional citations from authoritative third-party sources. I would very much appreciate your taking another look! Emitchell62000 (talk) 22:05, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
File permission problem with File:Those Who Wish Me Dead Cover.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Those Who Wish Me Dead Cover.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. Here is a list of your uploads. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 14:53, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
