JDAT/JFIIT[edit]

I'm trying to understand what you've done with these two pages. You edited the JFIIT page quite and bit, to the point where all the content is about JDAT. But then you created a new JDAT page and moved half the content from the JFIIT page to the new JDAT page. Are these two separate, yet existing entities? Or was JFIIT renamed as JDAT and now JFIIT no longer exists?

  • If this is a single entity that was basically renamed, then there should only be one article. The JFIIT page should continue and just be page-moved to a new name. The lead would indicate the change, the content would have detailed info about "JDAT", and there would be at least a mention, if not a history section, about JFIIT.
  • If the two both continue to exist, then the info on the JFIIT page should be about JFIIT, including the infobox and section headers, with just a mention of the co-existing JDAT.

Either way, something needs to be fixed here. I see from your history that you are new here (joined about 2 weeks ago and have about 30 edits). I strongly suggest you propose and discuss major changes on article talk pages or related WikiProject (ie: WT:MILHIST) talk pages before making them. Instead of making new pages on your own, you should go through articles for creation, or request an article through requested articles. I also suggest you get in the habit of creating new pages in your sandbox first, instead of in main space.

If you need help or have any questions, you can go to the help desk or just place {{help me}} on your talk page. You should also stop by the Wikipedia:Teahouse, a good place for beginners.

I'll wait for your reply to my questions above, and then we'll work on sorting out these pages. Cheers - theWOLFchild 20:44, 29 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

rename?[edit]

Hello WOLFchild. After your explanations, I think the first bullet applies more so(?) -single entity to be renamed. I initially thought that 2 independent pages make sense due the the mission statement differences between the 2 organizations and because the parent organization is also different. Thank you for your help and for the links to the areas that I need to explore for such new articles. Fwbrocks (talk) 15:54, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In that case, all the info should be moved to a single page. Since you've created the new page, (JDAT) that is where is should go. JFIIT will then be blanked and redirected to JDAT. It will take a little re-organizing and re-writing. I'll leave it to you to do (it'll be a good learning experience) and I'll check in to make sure everything is going ok and answer any question you may have.
  • Start by copy and pasting over any all content from the JFIIT page to the JDAT page, integrate it and clean it up. Then we'll blank whatever is left on JFIIT and do the redirect. OK? - theWOLFchild 18:35, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your guidance! I'll fix this asap. Fwbrocks (talk) 14:42, 31 March 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Fixed. - theWOLFchild 15:46, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I copied (moved-really) over all content from the JFIIT page to the JDAT page. I deleted from the JFIIT page as I went along to keep track of where I left off. I understood that we'd blank whatever is left on JFIIT and do the redirect. Should I have left some stuff there? Fwbrocks (talk) 19:46, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that you added the redirect from JFIIT? I sure appreciate your help here. Please advise if I need to take any additional action. Fwbrocks (talk) 19:52, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I checked the JDAT history and saw you created the spelled out version of the page. I don't know where 'public' thanks goes. Hope that is not annoying. Is that a moderator preference thing? As in, some folks would prefer a private thanks compared to public thanks. I'm not sure what these options are as I haven't noticed any difference anywhere that I can tell. Fwbrocks (talk) 20:17, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I received your 'thanks', and no... it is not annoying. I'm not sure what you mean by "moderator preference" or "public vs private" thanks, but the "thank you" function is that just that, a way of expressing thanks to an editor for a specific edit they made. It's a fairly minor function, so I wouldn't let it concern you.
I did rename the JDAT page to it's full name as it should be and redirected the "JDAT" (acronym) page to it. This is common to have such redirects (ie: "CIA" redirects to "Central Intelligence Agency", "USN" redirects to "United States Navy", and so on...).
For future reference, you should read Wikipedia:Moving a page, Wikipedia:Merging and Wikipedia:Splitting. This was a relatively minor issue this time around, but just the same there are certain ways things need to be done. If the subject of a page has been renamed, we don't typically create a new page and then copy & paste content over, we do a page move. Anyways, you'll get the hang of it.
As for the article, everything that needed to be done is taken care of. Feel free to continue improving the JDAT article and don't worry about the JFIIT page. Happy editing - theWOLFchild 22:05, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
