I joined because i want to create a new article "List of of burial places of classical music notable figures" ... but i'm trying in sandbox and working with tables is pretty complicated!

Good plan. I worked on lists but found them mostly given, such as List of Bach cantatas. One I did from scratch - but long ago - was Max Reger works. What a great idea for a list! A few things:

the title "List of of burial places of classical music notable figures" is hard to parse. I would just go with "List of burial places for classical musicians". Conductors, composers, instrumentalists are all included under "classical musicians". In addition, you don't want the "notable figures" since Wikipedia lists of people are implied to only include notable figures to begin with
Try to avoid Find a Grave as mush as possible; it's not a reliable source for Wikipedia purposes
With images in tables I'd avoid the "thumb parameter", just do [[File:NAME|center|200px]] or a similar px size, as long as its consistent
Definitely sort by last name, not first name! See {{Sortname}} for a way to do that

Translate?[edit]

Nice to see your name on my watchlist. Please explain your criteria for adding a template that there's more to be translated in the native language. I never use top templates because I believe they distract from the content, but understand some. This one makes sense in cases I often observe: a stub of two sentences just to avoid a red link. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:37, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gerda,

My approach has been as follows:

1) Identify articles that are underdeveloped or of below-average quality.

2) Check if in other languages the article is considerably more developed. I found that it does not necessarily have to be in the native language of the subject (see Josef Strauss and it's Japanese version)

I understand too that top templates are a bit distracting, sorry if it caused any incovenience.

I plan to work on improving some of them, but i also wanted to tag them so that the community was aware of the opportunity for improvement.

What would be a more appropiate way to do that? I'll revert the tags myself if they seem excessive in some cases.

Maybe:

-Use template only if the non-english article is much more developed AND is in the native language of the subject.

-For the other cases, perhaps just add a topic on the talk page of the article informing of the situation. Maybe also list this articles somewhere in Wikipedia:WikiProject Composers (if it's a composer) although I'm not sure where the most suitable place would be...

Thank you for explaining. In some sense, all our articles are works in progress, and that is understood without tagging and listing. If I was you, I'd not top-tag any of them. A talk page note seems better, and/or a note on Classical music, - if you think something is needed at all. You could just silently expand what you think is missing. To expect the average reader to translate from Japanese looks strange to me, and to send them to a Greek stub for an Italian person whose English article is not bad even more so. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:45, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't disputing that the section needed a citation, but putting the {{ character at the start of the paragraph was causing the text to display with lines in between. I totally agree with you, that paragraph is a bit of a mess...

That's how Template:Citation needed span works though: " [...] Unlike the template {{citation needed}}, this template attaches explicitly to a portion of text, for example one or more specific sentences, by surrounding the text with the template. This is especially useful for flagging a block of multiple facts or multiple sentences as needing citation..."

Additional names for list of burial places[edit]

Dear Gor1995, once again many thanks for the inspiration from your list of burial places of classical musicians! When I took the picture of Joan Sutherland's grave at Clarens cemetery the other day, I also made photos of other graves of prominent folks. Amongst them were the ones of Joseph Szigeti and his son-in-law Nikita Magaloff, who no doubt would qualify for the list with regard to their prominence. However, I think I am not good at creating new slots in the table and therefore appreciate if you were willing to do that. I remember that I have also taken photos of graves of other prominent classical musicians in Switzerland and beyond, which should likewise qualify and I could alert you to. Drafts that haven't been edited in 6 months get deleted. This list lets us see if any drafts are getting close to the 6-month danger date. Once an edit is made to an outline draft, the date for it in this list automatically updates.
