Barnstar development guidelines

[edit]

In response to some of the comments about archiving discussions, and how awards are vetted, last week I tweaked the Guidelines. No one noticed. I also archived the discussion that was used to create them. I just wanted to give you a heads up. evrik 18:43, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Awards Page

[edit]

I think that the variety of pages Barnstars and Other Related Awards and Personal User Awards for the awards are confusing. I have been trying to streamline them by creating the Wikipedia:Awards page. Let me know what you think. evrik 18:43, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Advice Requested

[edit]

Hi. I recently reverted an edit [1] and left notes on the users talk page [2]. The user responded with this. My instinct is to remain silent. However, I seek outside opinions on this matter. --BostonMA 19:38, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK: Tomitaro Makino

[edit]

Thanks for adding my DYK. However, it is grammatically incorrect:

...that botanist Tomitaro Makino, despite dropping out of grammar school, named over 2500 plants and be called "Father of Japanese Botany"?

I suggest changing "be called" to "has been called" or "is known as". Thanks, Dforest 04:25, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Medal

[edit]

Okay, I've closed the discussion. I couldn't find the templates either, so I just copied the code from earlier archives. I think they're based on the AFD Closure templates. Anyway, I've also uploaded the file as 100px version to commons under image:DYK medal.png (AzaToth's version was at 'DYN Medal'), but I'm not sure what the blurb should be, so perhaps you could write that. Regards, smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 14:26, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean that you wanted the image uploaded to Wikipedia, or placed in the Other awards section? Uploading the image to Commons automatically uploads it to en. Wikipedia anyway, just like any other image. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 16:14, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh sorry, now I get what you mean. I've added a section to the Wikipedia version only about its usage and introduction. In order to edit that sort data, use the 'edit this page' tag rather the [edit] boxes (which affects its Commons version too). Every award is listed on Commons (in fact, there's some very nice unused ones there as well, such as Image:StarfishBarnstar.png). They're all under Commons:Barnstar. I've listed the DYK medal there now with the featured article medal, so there should be no risk of deletion. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 16:51, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The templates are {{consensus top}} and {{consensus bottom}} (I know, strange name, but... :) edit: changed it to debate instead of consensus, so it's not {{debate top}} and {{debate bottom}} AzaToth 17:00, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GB - can you please have a look at this article? There is an anon IP using disruptive language and actions, but there may also be a problem with the article's possible "uencyclopedic" nature. Perhaps this is an inappropriate fork. Rama's Arrow 14:29, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for the star :) As the nom page is quite a backlog, I don't nominate shorter articles by myself - such as Ivan Martos or Mstislav Dobuzhinsky - these days. As best I understand, a side purpose of the Main Page redesign was to increase the length of WP:DYK section. As it didn't happen, some changes in the updation process would be welcome. What do you mean by "higher no. of admins can update the same"? --Ghirla -трёп- 10:13, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK medal

[edit]

Thanks! I really enjoy the DYK work. BTW, if you like my TALK box on the user page, I can mae one for you. Created by another user, I have found that it sure helps keep messages organized. Mark Vaoverland 02:17, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hello, i have a question regarding DYK eligibility of this article. i just finished some extensive expansion of this article on James Burnett, Lord Monboddo. Some of the research has been buried for two centuries in little cited works, but i have well referenced the particulars. It turns out that this fellow is quite important and in modern times largely unregcognized as an early thinker on evolutionary theory. i think this is worthy of DYK candidacy. The DYK line would go something like:

...that 70 years prior to Charles Darwin's work, James Burnett, Lord Monboddo, also a British scholar, published works framing the basis of evolution

let me know your thoughts, thank you. sincerely Anlace 04:01, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. Monboddo also did some fascinating work on the evolution of linguistics and has some remarkable theories on the association of Sanskrit and western language you may be interested in.Anlace 04:11, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gurubrahma, Thanks for the medal. :) I sure enjoy it. I am an editor first, admin second and bureaucrat third. Though, I've scaled down my edits in the last six months, but I still prefer to create new articles. That's what I started out with when I first registered. :) =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:48, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't really follow your edit summary comment. The problem is that the article seemed to be an uncomfortable mixture of fact and myth (from the dates to the section that I commented out). Gotama is an important figure, and needs a better article (I hope to expand it in the near future), and I think that excluding claims about what unspecified people believe, especially when those claims are either vague or unlikely, is a start. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:13, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think, though, that unless actual sources are given for the various beliefs that you mention, the article should't mention them (in line with Wikipedia guidelines). I've looked in the books that I have to hand, and haven't found any references to such confusions. I suspect that the mistake over the date, for example (in this article and in related articles), simply comes from a confusion between this person and the Buddha, and shouldn't be mentioned in the article (I haven't found a single source that puts his dates anywhere but between the second and third centuries CE). Mind you, even the scholarly sources make mistakes (Mohanty's Classical Indian Philosophy spells this philosopher's name both "Gotama" and "Gautama" at diferent points, which could be confusing.
The article should, in fact, be at Gotama, as "Akshapada" is a complimentary title.
I have just found, in fact, one source that gives him dates in the 6th century BCE: St. Elmo Nauman Jr's Dictionary of Asian Philosophies — but it's considerably older than my other sources, and not generally very reliable. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 14:13, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd agree if they were of equal standing, but all the modern scholarly sources (Indian and Western) agree; it's only the older, less scholarly source that doesn't. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 14:34, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think of the new version of the article? I've tried to meet your concerns. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 19:06, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:DYK

[edit]

Apologies for the mistakes - I've updated DYK several times in the past before without any trouble, and this time I noticed that it hadn't been updated since before the weekend, and no one was getting to it. As such, I decided to it, but was tired because it was late in the night for my time. Never a good combination; I didn't even notice the repeated "the"... Thanks for fixing everything up, though! DYK opinions

[edit]

I am curious about your criteria for "interesting" and "length" in DYK items? I notice that you condemn a number of items with your humble opinion. If you are one of the decision makers about which items get posted isn't that being a bit NonPOV and is that appropriate? I am absolutely fascinated by Arthur Ransome and his books, but, at least at first glance would find articles about obscure (to me) Indian people rather uninteresting. However, perhaps if you posted one on DYK I might click through and find out something interesting and informative. I believe NPOV should apply to DYK selections not some administrators opinion however humble. Dabbler 11:52, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I reject your unjustifiable accusation of trolling in mentioning India. I brought in India because for you it is obviously a major interest if your list of contributions on your User page are to be believed. I have never heard of many of the people that you have written about and no doubt that is my loss. Ransome is a major interest of mine and your condemnation of an article as "uninteresting " is your POV but I didn't accuse you of being a troll for saying that I just thought that to use your only opinion as a rationale was not NPOV. Dabbler 13:55, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am amazed and never dreamed that you thought I was accusing you of partiality towards Indian articles for DYK, that was never in my thoughts. My only intention was to point out that what may be interesting to you would not necessarily be interesting to me (at least at first glance) and your statement about my article came across as demeaning to me and my interests. I, too don't want to get into shouting matches and want Wikipedia to be a pleasant place but I felt upset and annoyed by your seemingly cavalier dismissal of me and my interests. Also, hoping to clarify if needed; I wasn't rejecting your help; I was just hoping you'd create your own standards and evolve them over time as I've evolved mine. Hi Gurubrahma, long time! The quiz is a brilliant initiative. Beware, I might start monopolizing responses any time soon. I've replaced images on the movies page with links. • The person is real and was fairly well known during his time in Cricinfo. He was the editor of 'Cricinfo 365' - a cricket news daily - that Cricinfo used to run from 1998 till 2001 or so. He also has a userpage at User:Rickeyre. He has 25K google hits but his notability should be fairly borderline. So if you want to list it for AfD you can do it.
