Notability, in-line citations, and context suggestions

I'm happy to help.

The first issue is establishing notability by citing reliable sources--you have 3 reasonable references, but no in-line citations, so we could start with that fix. One editor commented that the subject didn't seem to have notability outside its local area, but that could be addressed by providing context, namely Oregon's sad history of exclusion laws, dating back to 1844. Demographics and attitudes have historically worked against opportunities for non-whites in Oregon. So even though there may have been Black owner-operators of businesses like bakeries much earlier in other parts of the country, in Oregon the first was the Milwaukie Pastry Kitchen in 1977, verified by the Oregon Historical Society exhibit. That seems notable to me. I think we can strengthen the case for its notability by giving that context in more detail and citing reliable sources.

I noticed you had more biographical information in earlier versions of the article, and it's good to re-focus just on the business. It would also be good to review Wikipedia:Conflict of interest as it appears you have a close relationship with Hurtis, Sr.?

JSTOR, image licensing

Hi Hurtisjr. Through the Multnomah County Library, I have access to JSTOR, a digitized repository of journal articles. I'll search there to see if I can find other sources. I find the article to be quite interesting, and I agree with User:Grand'mere Eugene that the fact of the Oregon Historical Society exhibit strongly supports notability.

I think the COI issues should be more specifically addressed in the image licenses. If you are the photographer, then "Source: Own Work" and "Author: Hurtisjr" is correct. However, if either image is simply a family photo you have access to, it would be more accurate to say "Source: Family photo in my possession" or whatever the case may be, and "Author: Unknown (or the name of the photographer, if you know it). The second photo is a bit more problematic, perhaps, because it's not clear where it came from. I see that it appears in the Oregon Labor Press article. If they got it from you and it's part of the family collection, you should make that clear. If not, where did it come from? Who took the photo? Did the Labor Press photographer take the photo? Or did the Labor Press get permission from the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) to reprint the image, in which case OHS may hold the copyright. If the Labor Press or OHS holds the copyright, the image can't be copied and uploaded legitimately to the Commons under a CC-by-SA license. Finetooth (talk) 16:52, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
