OKATANA COMBINED SCHOOL

[edit]

Okatana Primary and Combined School is a school located northern of Namibia, in the suburbs of Oshakati, in Okatana Constituency just a few kilometers approximately 5 kilometers north-east of Oshakati Coca Cola, Meatco Namibia and Etango Complex.

The name Okatana

[edit]

The name "Okatana" in Oshiwambo means "calf". One day in the early 1920s a Roman Catholic missionary, found a calf stuck in the mud in a pan along the Cuvelai that runs through the village. The missionary went to call people to help the poor calf out of the mud, he learned of the new word/noun "Okatana" and from that moment on, he used the name Okatana to mark that area and the surroundings of where he found the calf, and that is how the name Okatana came to being.

Okatana Primary and Senior

[edit]

The Okatana Combined School, consists of two schools, the Junior Primary and the Senior Secondary schools. Both schools are one even though they have separate school principals. The Okatana Junior Primary had grade 1 up to grade 4(which was tought in the buildings donated to the school by DrFrans Indongo a well known business man in Namibia), in the early 1960s until early 2000, the rest of the grades were at the Okatana Senior School starting from grade 5 through standard 8(now grade 10). A lot has changed now both at Okatana Junior Primary and Senior, after Namibia got independence in 1990, the Namibia government built and expanded the learning facilities such as classes, libraries, laboratories, workshop and teachers resources center.

Flood

[edit]

During rainy season, this place is flooded with water from our neighboring country Angola via the Cuvelai making it a bit difficult for students who come to school by foot to come on time for classes. Even though comes with its negative impacts, it also helps the youths from this area generate their pocket money through selling cat-fish and tilapia.

Roman Catholic Church[1]

[edit]

This is the oldest remarkable cite at Okatana. The church has been there for approximately twelve decades now.
