Alphabetizing names
[edit]Hi. Do you really think we should follow Finnish letter order in English Wikipedia? Doesn't that make things unnecessarily complicated if we use different sorting order for each language?--Jyril 21:57, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yes I really think we should follow Finnish letter order in categories specific to Finland. In international categories we should follow the English letter order. JIP | Talk 06:37, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Why? Finnish people articles are not Finnish categories. They're as much English as others. Let's say we have a person who is Estonian-Finnish. What character order should we use for him? Finnish ordering in Finnish people category, Estonian ordering (which is quite different, and AFAIK not possible here) in Estonian people category, and English ordering in some general category?--Jyril 07:07, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Exactly. If Estonian ordering is not possible then we should at least try to come close to it. I think when people read a list that by definition only contains Finnish names they expect it to be sorted in the Finnish way. That's how Finns themselves alphabetise their lists. In international categories this would not work as we could get mix-ups between different alphabetisations (for example, ä comes after z in Finnish, but is alphabetised equal to a in German). JIP | Talk 07:10, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well, most English and other non-Finnish readers are not familiar with the Finnish alphabet order. I still don't see what we could gain by using different sorting in nationality-specific categories, especially as they don't work properly due to technical limitations. IMHO, Finnish Wikipedia, on the other hand, should always follow the Finnish alphabet order and so on.--Jyril 08:14, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

- I must say that I support Jyril here. In the English wikipedia, english ordering of letters should be used. But this does not mean that the Finnish (and Swedish) special ä and ö should be written a and o, merely alphabetised as them.--Hunef 18:10, 5 May 2006 (UTC))
- I agree with Jyril and Hunef. This is an English wiki. I apologize for what appears to be an offense to the Finnish language but for ease of use for English users it should be listed in English order as Husef suggested. Wikipedia exists in many different languages. If you want the ordering to be in the Finnish style then find that wiki. I respect our language differences and if this wasn't specifically an English wiki I wouldn't have a problem with stand JIP, but it is specifically English so I think it should be organized for convenience for English speakers. --DannyBoy7783 01:50, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I know what you mean: I checked everything about 10 times before saving the pages to make sure that I would not list ISBN for deletion by mistake :-) Schutz 16:29, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
Hey, JIP/Archive 14, thank you so much for your vote and comments in my RfA, which passed with an overwhelming consensus of 95/2/2. I was very surprised and flattered that the community has entrusted me with these lovely new toys. I ripped open the box and started playing with them as soon as I got them, and I've already had the pleasure of deleting random nonsense/attacks/copyvios tonight. If I ever do anything wrong, or can help in some way, please feel free to drop me a line on my talk page, and I will do my best to correct my mistake, or whatever... Now, to that bottle of wine waiting for me... |
May the Force be with you.
[edit]Dear JIP/Archive 14,
- Thanks for voting on my RFA! I appreciate your faith in me, and was overwhelmed by the positive response to my RFA; for it shows that at least I'm doing something right. :) I've started working to improve myself already, and I hope that next time, things run better, and maybe, just maybe, one day we can bask on the shores of Admintopia together. Thanks and cheers, _-M o P-_ 21:51, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
You voted to delete this article in its last AfD nomination. A user using different IPs is trying to expand the article using origional research and no citations. I reverting his edits back to my own which ask for citations for each of his claims. I am thinking about putting it up for deletion again because it's clearly a violation of WP:NOR and the OR is the only thing really establishing notability. What do you think? --Strothra 01:51, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
Actually I went ahead and renominated it anyway. feel free to take a look --Strothra 06:13, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit]please see Talk:Vegemite, "Ordering Vegemite." I probably should have just commented here. Oh well. --DannyBoy7783 01:47, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- from Scandinavia: "Scandinavia is a region in Northern Europe named after the Scandinavian Peninsula. In many parts of the world the terms "Scandinavia" and "the Nordic countries" are used interchangeably. The most common definition includes continental Denmark, mainland Norway and Sweden. Finland is often included even in official contexts, although after the 1850s this inclusion divides opinions in all of the respective states."--DannyBoy7783 12:04, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, but the article also mentions that although the terms "Nordic" and "Scandinavian" are often used interchangably, they are (at least in theory) not identical. I was myself calling Finland Scandinavian for years, until a Swedish person corrected me. JIP | Talk 12:27, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

This arbitration case is closed.
Monicasdude is placed on standard civility parole for one year. If he makes any edits which are judged by an administrator to be uncivil, personal attacks, or assumptions of bad faith, then he may be blocked for a short time of up to one week for repeat offenses. Monicasdude is banned from making edits related to the deletion process (excepting obvious vandalism and copyright problems) for one year. This is to be interpreted broadly, and includes, but is not limited to, commenting on articles for deletion nominations and removals of nominations for proposed deletion and speedy deletion. He may be blocked for a short time of up to one week for repeat offenses. After 5 such blocks, the maximum block time is increased to a year.
Should Monicasdude violate any ban imposed by this decision he may be briefly blocked, up to a week for repeat offenses. After 5 such blocks, the maximum block time is increased to a year. All blocks to be logged at Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Monicasdude#Log_of_blocks_and_bans.

Isabelle Rees
[edit]Hi there. I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Isabelle Rees, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Importance). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Isabelle Rees. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. --Stenun 00:11, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- I'm contesting the proposed deletion and suggesting merging to Amiga Power instead. If people do not agree with this, then the article can be nominated for deletion. JIP | Talk 08:23, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Having read the Amiga Power article, I think a brief section on Isabelle Rees wouldn't be unreasonable. I just think having a seperate article on someone with no claim to fame other than they wrote a few letters to a defunct magazine is rather ridiculous. --Stenun 14:08, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Geordie
[edit]removed Steve Cram (I don't know who he is, but if the article says he's not a Geordie, then I take its word))
I am quite surprised that an experienced contributor would take the word of a new user who had left an edit verging on vandalism relating to a world renowned sportsman. A quick look at Steve Cram would have informed you who he was and his place of birth is readily determined from other reliable sources. The reference to Mackem relates to Steve Cram's allegiance to Sunderland football club leaky_caldron 22:33, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hisham Sliti
[edit]You did the closing on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hisham Sliti. You marked it as "no consensus". 3 keep votes, 1 delete vote. Am I missing something? Shouldn't this have been marked "keep"?
The reason I am asking is that someone announced their intention of deleting all articles on Guantanamo detainees. And I think someone may ask about the stats on those articles that have been previously listed for deletion. Thanks. -- Geo Swan 23:19, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]as you may have guessed, the commented-out bios were extracted from the articles by a script (search for "mergenames", and you will find more), and put into the page so that it would be simple for someone to come along later and write proper one-line bios.
Thanks for starting in on the task! --Alvestrand 07:05, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
Please note that you closed an AfD on this article quite some time ago and the result was DELETE. It seems that the article has since been recreated. Was this allowed? Please check into this because it doesn't seem that it was. Thanks --Strothra 02:00, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

You are about to be blocked...
[edit]...for 49 seconds, for AfDing Star Trek (this is the length of the original theme song!) Sorry, but you really asked for it -- one good joke deserves another! Best wishes, Xoloz 15:58, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- I should add that my first instinct was to block for 17.01 seconds, but this was outside parameters of the block function. :)
- So that is where the number 49 comes from. Anyway, thanks for the block, it was my first ever, and I'm even a Wikipedia admin and everything. JIP | Talk 16:07, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, I'm sorry! I really didn't mean to spoil your block virginity! Oops! :( Xoloz 16:17, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- As a Wikipedian (not that I'm claiming to be a particularly important one, just a Wikipedian), I take great offense at what both of you are doing. Believe me, I completely, 100% live my life around the premise of having fun and being happy (and making others happy), but what you guys are doing is simply disrupting Wikipedia. I understand the joke of AfDing Star Trek, but I didn't laugh. Instead, after seeing who had created the AfD, I said to myself, "I can't believe that somebody- an administrator, no less- would vandalize WP in this way." I'd expect crap like this from new users, but not from people with thousands of edits. Xoloz, as another admin, you should know better than to encourage your brethren to partake in such actions. Think of it this way: If I did the exact same thing, even if it was clearly a joke, would you even hesitate to give me a stern (official) warning on my talk page? I have great respect for people who devote enough time and energy to WP so as to achieve adminship, but JIP, I think you deserve an actual warning for upsetting WP in an attempt to make a humorous POINT. -- Kicking222 17:58, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, Kicking, although I did choose the length of the block to be humorous, I did block JIP for disruption. So, if you wish, you may see the this as a punishment earned, a punishment served, and a minor wrong rectified. Granted, it was done with a good-natured smile and a laugh, but these are things I wish would accompany every block, whatever the reason. If the user who nominated Star Trek had not been known to me personally, I would neither have issued a warning nor a block, but would have counselled him or her on the proper use of AfD. It is only because JIP "knows better" that he was blocked at all. Were he to nominate Star Trek for AfD again now, I would give him quite a serious block. Best wishes, Xoloz 18:19, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Series of books sorting
[edit]Here's the post I just wrote on the category's talk page: By using the "*" sortkey, all the sub-cats appear on the first page of the category; from what I gather, this makes it easier to find a sub-cat under which to file an article, as it appears the first time you access the category page. (You can also use a space, as in [[Category:Series of books| Foo series]].) There was some discussion about it at Wikipedia_talk:Categorization#Subcategories. If this annoys anyone, please revert it with impunity, and I plead obsessive compulsiveness. Cheers, ♥ Her Pegship♥ 15:42, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
