Billy "JC" Davis, Midnighter from the group Hank Ballard and the Midnighters.[edit]

Billy "JC" Davis, usually referred to as simply "Billy Davis", is an American musician best known as the lead guitarist of the rock and roll / rhythm and blues group Hank Ballard and the Midnighters in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He joined the Midnighters in 1959 after then lead guitarist, Cal Green, was arrested for smoking marijuana in his home state of Texas. Davis toured with the band over the next 4 years and recorded with them such hits as Finger Poppin Time, Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go, and The Twist. In 2012, Davis and all of the Midnighters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Davis was born in Mississippi in 1939 but moved to Detroit, Michigan at a young age where he learned to play guitar. He was heading up a popular local band in 1959 called Billy Davis and the Upsetters when he was discovered by Hank Ballard and asked to join the band.

In 1967 Billy joined good friend and fellow Detroiter, Jackie Wilson's band as lead guitarist. Together they recorded the hit song "Higher and Higher".

When Hank Ballard and the Midnighters disbanded in 1963, Davis stayed on with Hank Ballard as his guitarist. Together they toured and recorded a hit album entitled "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down".
