Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Kkaufman DMS. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Draft:Dedham Middle School, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Hello, I am trying to help my students become more familiar with Wikipedia and create a page for their school. They are not allowed to edit so I am taking their work and trying to put the page together. This is my first try at this and would appreciate any advice for getting it published. I am adding to it now so it is more complete. The idea is to have students continue to contribute to it through the years to come.
Any recommendations? Kkaufman DMS (talk) 19:11, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon The proper way to approach this is to continue building the draft you created at Draft:Dedham Middle School and develop it until it meets approval to become an article in the encyclopedia. You should consult Wikipedia:Article creation before bothering to submit it for approval, because there are a number of specific things that are required of an article. (2) Please stop overwriting the currect redirect [1] until the article is deemed ready. (3) You also need to comply with the information given above about conflicts of interest and how they need to be handled. (4) In general, your students should be able to edit the draft, unless certain IP addresses have been barred because of previous abuse. What makes you say they are not allowed to edit? signed, Willondon (talk) 19:26, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, sorry about the removal of the redirect. I will keep things in the draft mode until it is ready. My students aren't allowed to create accounts in school, but they are able to edit without one. So I was referring to the creation of an account more than editing privileges. I wanted to get the page published so I can have them add information, as I wasn't aware I can have them edit the draft. I am also going to check out some of the resources for students. I think I moved quickly here not realizing some of the requirements or strict policies (which I appreciate!). Do you have any other advice for my particular situation? If I work at Dedham Middle School, will it be too difficult to create this page based on conflict of interest? Should I abandon this and find a different topic? Thanks again for your guidance. Ktech201 (talk) 12:58, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! You could create the page, although, as you have a conflict of interest, you have to use Articles for Creation instead of directly writing it in article space. As you were already doing that, there shouldn't be any issue! Just take care to present the fact neutrally and to not use primary sources too much, and read Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide if you want more information! Should I abandon this and find a different topic? That's probably a better plan. Creating or editing articles about yourself or something you have a vested interest in is strongly discouraged. But if you want to continue with the school, you can find guidance at Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article advice. A common problem I see with conflicts of interest regarding schools or companies is a tendancy to view the article as "the school's web page on Wikipedia", leading to frustration when it becomes apparant that it is an article in an encyclopedia that will be curated by the entire Wikipedia community according to the principles and guidelines developed over the years. The conflict sometimes makes it hard to distinguish between things of interest to the school (e.g. class start times) and what is suitable for an encyclopedia. Best of luck, and know that you can always ask other editors for help, or consult the "Teahouse" to get a wider range of opinions. Cheers. signed, Willondon (talk) 14:59, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
