San Jose Murders 2016

[edit]

SAN JOSE, CA — The two sons of a couple found dead in their San Jose home have been arrested in connection to the double homicide, according to police.

Hasib Bin Golamrabbi, 22, and his brother, 17, were arrested Wednesday and are being held as suspects in their parent’s murder.

San Jose residents Shamima Rabbi, 57 and Golam Rabbi, 59, were found shot dead in the 3000 block of Lucas Court at 1:47 p.m. Sunday, according to police.san jose couple

Golamrabbi was arrested in Tracy and is being held at the Santa Clara County Jail without bail.

His younger brother, who’s identity has not been released since he is a minor, was arrested in San Jose and has been booked into the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall.

San Jose police announced Tuesday that they were looking to question the older son and said they had questioned the younger brother after the deaths.

Police say there are no other suspects in this case.

Family friend Hasan Rahim said it has been difficult to reconcile with the violent way in which the couple’s lives ended.

The couple was “extremely polite and humble,” said Rahim, who knew them for more than 20 years.

Golam and Shamima Rabbi were immigrants from Bangladesh and part of Evergreen Islamic Center, a mosque where they were active members for about 15 years, Rahim said.

The husband and wife were both long time volunteers at the Evergreen Islamic Center in San Jose. People at the center say the entire community is in shock.

Rahim remembered Golam Rabbi as a generous man who always volunteered his time for the community, including clearing land for the center’s new mosque currently under construction.

Golam Rabbi, who worked as a quality assurance engineer for many years, also opened his home to relatives who needed a place to stay until they got on their feet.

Family and friends were stunned when they heard the news of the couple’s deaths and hope to find closure with the tragedy at Friday’s prayer and funeral services, Rahim said.

The 17-year-old son is a student at Evergreen Valley High School. The school issued a statement saying “we are in shock and disbelief regarding this tragic event.”

“We want to reassure parents that our school is and remains a safe place for our students and staff,” East Side Union High School District Superintendent Chris Funk said.

The school will have counselors and support staff available to the students at the school.

A memorial for the couple is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Evergreen Islamic Center.

About 500 people are expected to attend a “Jumah,” a weekly congregational service scheduled for 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral prayer called a “Janazah” at the Muslim Community Association at 3003 Scott Blvd. in Santa Clara.

The group will then attend a burial service at Five Pillars Farm Cemetery at 1761 Laughlin Road in Livermore.

Downtown Oakland Shooting 2016

[edit]
Eight people were shot in downtown Oakland early Tuesday evening -- leaving one dead, according to police.

The name of the female victim has not been released.

- Law enforcement from three districts in the city responded to a call for help shortly after 5:40 p.m. The shooting along the 1300 block of Franklin Street occurred as mourners gathered for a vigil for someone who drowned in Stanislaus County, said Oakland police Officer Kyle Hazen.

Early reports indicated that the victim was a 16-year-old girl. Hazen said the others hit by bullets “are from a wide age range.” All four were taken to Alameda County Medical Center; the remaining injured persons are listed in serious condition.

– Oakland police initially said there were as many as six people wounded by gunfire Tuesday, but later changed that figure to five after further medical evaluation determined some of the injuries were not caused by the shooting itself.

––– This article has been updated to reflect that police said fewer people were shot but one person has died. –––
