Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Marbles/Archive 1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. If you would like to experiment with Wikipedia, I personally invite you to do so in my own sandbox (just follow the simple rules!). Hi Marbless333,

Thanks for your comments and question on [Talk:Javine Hylton]. Can I recommend that you sign your comments? You can do this with four tildes - ~~~~ - that way, people can see who you are to respond?

You asked why a citation was necessary. Well, one of the principals of Wikipedia is that it is a compendium of knowledge from other sources - that is, everything which is included must be drawn from a verifiable external reference. So, in the case of Javine's performance in Eurovision, a suitable source may be BBC News' article on the matter such as this one[1]. I agree with you that one could assume that she completed the heats to get there.

If you'd like to understand more about what makes a good (acceptable) source, try looking at WP:RS. You might also find WP:CITE (which talks about how to cite sources), and WP:BLP which talks about the minimum quality requirements for biographies of living people.

If you have any other questions, please let me know. Mnbf9rca 20:37, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Tastecfn.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Tastecfn.JPG. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 18:10, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Moss Valley

[edit]

I've re-structured the page so that the images are now thumbnails and not a gallery. Galleries seem to cause problems with some images and no pictures ever appear!

Classic Gold

[edit]

Hi Marbles,

Essentially the sell-off was due to restrictions on the number of radio stations that any one entity can control. As I understand it GWR (prior to the GCap merger) sold the controlling 80% interest to UBC with a clause giving GWR the right to repurchase the interest at a future time should broadcast regulations be liberalised to the point that they'd be allowed to control all the stations. They were able to retain 20% as that doesn't amount to control of the stations when another entity owns all of the other 80%.

GCap "inhereted" that 20% at the time of the merger, presumably along with the right to repurchase UBC's stake (though whether they'd wish to do so is anyone's guess). As for sharing The One Network's studios, the arrangement existed since before GWR sold up to UBC, and I don't know this for sure but I guess the agreement with UBC allowed Classic Gold stations to continue the existing studio sharing arragements.

Hope that helps but please let me know if you need more info.

Cheers -- Matthew Humphreys 19:25, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking of 194.83.84.15

[edit]

Hi Marbles333, I've unblocked that address as it was probably a bit harsh given that it is from a known educational institution and used by multiple users. — Moondyne 02:31, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HTV

[edit]

No, because naming conventions seek to place each article under what the majority of people know the subject as. But redirects are good, and free!, so we should do that just in case anyone ever has reason to use the corporate name :o) ЯEDVERS 20:01, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good good. I don't know anyone around here who calls it "ITV1 Wales" - still and always will be HTV. Marbles 20:13, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HTV etc (again)

[edit]

Hey Marbles. It occurs to me that we're probably fighting something of a losing battle over the likes of HTV remaining HTV - the ident kiddies will eventually wear us down by moving all the franchise articles to ITV Something Or Other and having to be reverted, over and over again ad nauseum. They're already making unencyclopedic arguments on talk pages...

How about we head them off at the pass, creating the ITV Something or other articles and ensuring that existing content and names are kept, but that the Something or other articles are there for future development? Does that make sense? It'd require splitting the navigation templates like {{ITV}} and the like and some nifty disambiguation on the top of each article so that Real company points to Made up name and vice versa.

What do you think? REDVEЯS 20:51, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You've slightly lost me there, Redvers! As far as I was aware, the ITV-plc modified names exist only as redirects, such as ITV Wales and West point to HTV, ITV Granada points to Granada Television and so on. HTV has been HTV for 33 years, and ITV Wales/West for a mere 4, and is almost universally known as HTV. Even our local newsgathering centre still posesses HTV signage - I don't know a single person who calls it "ITV1 Wales". Although HTV Group Ltd has become ITV Wales and West Ltd, the Ofcom contracts are still made to HTV Group Plc, despite the name of the company being changed. The same could be said about Carlton Television, which has absolutely no output at all these days. Marbles 21:07, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a specialism as of yet, it would seem. I suppose I'd like to clean up articles, as then I can be sure I'm not adding any information I only thought was true or deleting information which was actually useful. If I hear about something I want to know, I look it up... if the article isn't good I research it and rewrite it. Oh and German translations too. MathiasFox 16:37, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your reversions of the Freeview article

Just to make you aware, you have preformed three reverts on the Freeview article within 24 hours. If you revert any changes again, you will violate the three revert rule and an administrator may block you for up to 24 hours. Please take your disagreements to the talk page. Thanks. --tgheretford (talk) 12:30, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know very well the three revert rule, and if I feel a revert is neccessary I will carry out that revert, threats or no threats. There is no dispute, merely a misunderstanding. I did NOT implement the genercised trademark information. The user in question did not make his reason for cite tagging known, and neither was it placed in the correct position. I am perfectly obliged to correct information, although the first two were merely a misunderstanding of the editor's claims on my behalf. Infact, only two reverts have been made by myself, a third wording change was used but that was not considered a revert. I go by my reason for reverting - a cite is not needed or available for the information in which the editor tagged, the information I later removed which I percieved as uncited WAS NOT tagged. /Marbles 17:07, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for a UK radio stations task force

[edit]

Hi there.

I noticed you are part of the radio stations WikiProject but wish to contribute to UK radio station articles only. I have made a proposal to start a UK radio stations task force which would be able to work more effectively with UK radio station articles whilst still being a part of the main radio stations WikiProject.

Full discussion and opinions are being sort here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Radio Stations#Proposal: UK Radio stations task force.

New proposal: UK radio and radio stations task force

Hi there.

I am discussing a revised idea of starting a task force, part of WikiProject Radio which covers the radio industry, as well as the radio stations of the United Kingdom (in contrast to the original idea to just cover UK radio stations). Discussion on the proposal is here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Radio Stations#New proposal: UK radio and radio stations task force. Look forward to hearing your views and potential interest the revised task force. Thank you. --tgheretford (talk) 09:45, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your offer. I have been out in Cape Verde and unable to log on. My difficulty at present is really about the subject matter of any article and how to format it. Does it need a lot of links etc? When I have placed items they have been criticised for not having enough links. But this is a very primitive country and there are few online sources at all, which is precisely why I was hoping to fill a gap. What should I write about an upcoming holiday and property buying destination, which is little known to English-speakers please?

Hi,

I'm very much a newbie to Wikipedia and need help with such things as grouping articles into categories, when to create a new page versus when to add new information to an existing page, and so on.

My particular topic interests are primarily in the area of special education in general and learning disabilities in particular. I don't need a mentor in the content area, but feedback on my contributions would be most welcome!

I'm in US Central timezone and am on Wikipedia only once or twice a week (I have two special needs children).

Adoptee needs sanity check / guidance

[edit]

Hi, Marbles. I could use some guidance on an article I'm working on, Dyslexia.

I've read through all the discussion page and interacted with the two current primary contributors. We don't have an active dispute, but I do think the content is at this point very flawed and I'm not sure how to proceed in raising the issues that I see. I need someone objective to give me a sanity check on my perceptions, hopefully followed by some guidance as to how to participate constructively so that we can move forward in developing the article.

The article is already long enough to turn into a series, and I think we have general consensus that the next step is to turn the article into a series, with the current article evolving over time into a top-level article using the summary style.

Here's a summary of the primary issues I see:

- When I look at the article, I don't recognize the information as representing mainstream dyslexia information published in the US by respected non-profit organizations and researchers. I suspect that part of the problem results from how the issues are viewed and addressed in the U.S. and the U.K, and that this is causing a problem because these editors are both dyslexic (so they have vested interests and very strong views) and from the U.K. On the other hand, I'm certainly not unbiased, so I would appreciate some feedback from an objective editor.

- There is some confusion about the expected audience for the article. The two current primary contributors (who are evidently both dyslexic) seem to believe that their primary audience is other dyslexics. As an encyclopedia article, I would expect the initial information to be geared for someone unfamiliar with the topic. Beyond that, I would expect more specialized topics to be addressed in subordinate or related articles. I'm sure that the Wiki prinicples of NPOV and article Summary Style can be used in the discussion. I'd just like some guidance on how to approach the issue without causing a war.  :-)

- There are references to a couple of selected commercial programs and also a couple of "researchers" who gain financially from their publications and organizations, and there's resistance to removing such information. I'm pretty sure that these need to go.

I'm prepared to wait awhile on introducing issues in order to avoid disputes, but I think it would be good to begin a discussion of the issues --- one at a time --- presuming that my biases are not blinding me to the overall issues.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Best,

smoran 19:31, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Marbles,

Thanks much --- and good luck on your exams! smoran 02:52, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unusual Adoption Request

[edit]

Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.

Thank you!

I have been offered a chapter from a medical text that I want to use to start an entry. I understand there are multiple licenses and after looking at them am confused about what to recommend the author. imageryguides 16:24, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article would best fit in a section under CAM.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Magictv.PNG)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Magictv.PNG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 14:16, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Upload Pictures

[edit]

Marbles, i went through Wiki's copyright policy and still not clear if i can upload images from news sites after quoting the source. Is information published in newspapers and mags not public info which anyone can use as long as the source is acknowledged.Gs44631 (talk) 18:11, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Flaunttv.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Flaunttv.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 06:44, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
