Hi, Mark! Thanks for your work on the Cape York Telegraph Line etc. I realise that there is a steep learning curve with Wikipedia. I am interested in Queensland history and happy to help you. But at the moment I am in Phnom Penh with only a mobile device and not reliable Internet access which makes it very hard for me to edit Wikipedia, so my help at the moment is somewhat limited. Personally I would remove the attribution to the unidentified newspaper; I think there are enough citations to sustain the article's existence for the moment. Can you tell me the title of the newspaper article or better still email me the scan at kerry.raymond@wikimedia.org.au and I will see if I can do anything to identify it. Kerry (talk) 03:52, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kerry, I'm actually Philippines based, my Grand Parents ran the Paterson Telegraph Station, my dad grew up there (he is 87 now, still going strong). I woudl appreciate any help, I have emailed a bunch of people asking for material and permission to use it, the history of Cape York is so poorly documented and my family's history was an integral part of it, so I think Wikipedia is a great mechanism for recording it for the future generations. I will remove the attribution, I agree. I just found the article on line as well .. I suspect some of my other family members communicated with this lady, Penny Anderson, and it came form us to her or I got it via them .. I have also emailed her, but no address is current, it bounces. You can grab it from here, last photo .. http://penniemanderson.tripod.com/capeyorktelegraphline/id16.html

Thanks again for the offer, it is very much appreciated ..

It looks to me like a book/manuscript from the typeface and width of the column rather than a newspaper. Since it mentions closure in 1960, it is written after that date. It is therefore in copyright (newspapers are out of copyright pre-1955 and books from 70 years after the death of the author). This allows us to cite it (if we could work out what it is) but not include its text verbatim. Kerry (talk) 04:39, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
However you can cite the info from the Pennie Anderson webpage giving just the URL (since we don't know title or author). While such a citation might not be seen as super reliable, it's always better to have some citation than nothing. Just don't use it verbatim with attribution. Kerry (talk) 05:02, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that sounds good until I get something better .. THanks Markcupitt (talk) 05:06, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kerry, did you remove the info box? It seems to have disappeared, not sure if it was me doing it accidently Cheers Markcupitt (talk) 04:23, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, it was me .. fixed .. Markcupitt (talk) 04:29, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Photo placement

[edit]

Just put them near the relevant text. Don't agonise too much about the resultant page layout, as page layout is going to be different on everyone's computer screen and mobile phone. What might look OK to you on your screen will look awful on someone else's and vice versa. As a beginner, just put your efforts into adding good content (text, citation, photos) and others will clean up if there are problems. Kerry (talk) 05:08, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm actually a Software Developer, cannot help myself, trying them on different size screens as I go .. I actually think in HTML :) Cheers Markcupitt (talk) 05:33, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
However, I still getting used to the Wikipedia way of doing things, I have deployed a number of Wikimedia sites, but never got this complex with the Templates :) all good to learn Cheers Markcupitt (talk) 05:36, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. The correct licensing for this and the one below is {{PD-Australia}} (Use it exactly as written) which means in the public domain (out of copyright) under Australian copyright law. This tag can be used for photos taken in Australia pre-1955. It is also used for Australian newspaper content pre-1955. Or for Australian books where the author has been dead for 70+ years. Kerry (talk) 14:38, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is actually better and generally easier to upload your images on Wikimedia Commons using the "Upload file" on the left-hand tool bar and (if not automatically selected for you), select the Upload Wizard. This means the image can be used in any language edition of Wikipedia. Once on Commons, you use the image file with an article exactly the same as you are currently doing, as the system automatically looks in Commons and English Wikipedia for a file of that name. Kerry (talk) 14:38, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Kerry, that's good advice .. appreciate it a great deal. Markcupitt (talk) 00:26, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging For File:House_Cape_York_Telegraph_Station_-_Jack_Cupitt_on_Horse,_Wife,_Emily_on_Steps_Son,_Jim_on_Verandah.jpg

[edit]

Could you please take a look at File:House_Cape_York_Telegraph_Station_-_Jack_Cupitt_on_Horse,_Wife,_Emily_on_Steps_Son,_Jim_on_Verandah.jpg, I have some issues there as well, I have tried to correct, but not quite sure what I need to do! .. Thanks Markcupitt (talk) 00:35, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The problem there is most likely the lack of source information, to justify the claim of PD-Australia. WHere did this photo come from? WHat is known about the date? whereas the photos from the Queenslander had info in the file name that revealed that it was a pre-1955 photo taken in australia. This jack on the horse photo info does not clearly reveal when the photo was taken (we need at least a "circa" or a "pre" or other rationale "eg Jack Cupitt died in 1950 so this is a pre-1950 photo". It is perfectly OK to say it is from your family photo album. It is OK to say the date is Whatever because it was written in the back of the photo or in the album or based on the age of young Jim. When you upload on Commons, the wizard takes you through the questions so that you generally reveal this kind of information. Kerry (talk) 01:16, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm actually confused as to where and how to add this information, I apologise, but I see it still says it must meet non-free criteria, when in fact the license is now PD-Australia .. I reverted to an earlier version and it looks like the non-free revisions will be removed on Feb 22 .. The Photo is from our family album, was taken at Peak Point, Cape York, Young Jim would have been approx 17, he was born in approx 1932, so that would make the photo dated at around 1949. This is consistent as Emily took over the running of the Post Office prior to the end of WW2 .. If you could do me a favor and correct it with this info, I wil know how to do it for the rest of the photos I want to add as well. I take your point on the Commons, will put them there in future. Thanks again Markcupitt (talk) 01:35, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think I have done it. But as I don't upload to en.WP directly, I am not familiar with the template structures in use. But hopefully the plain text tells the story. I had the same problems with uploading my first photos (mostly for the same reasons - unclear licensing). Kerry (talk) 05:15, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:House Cape York Telegraph Station - Jack Cupitt on Horse, Wife, Emily on Steps Son, Jim on Verandah.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:House Cape York Telegraph Station - Jack Cupitt on Horse, Wife, Emily on Steps Son, Jim on Verandah.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

ATTENTION: This is an automated, bot-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 03:00, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
