Eagle Scout Badge[edit]

I see that you uploaded Image:Eagle.gif from scouting.org and added it to the Eagle page. Its a nice pic but I'm concerned about the licenceing. You could prob label it fair use and get away with it because there is no policy i can find on scouting.org for use. The much better option would be for you to take a picture of an eagle badge yourself and release it into the public domain so that there will never be a question of legality. If there continues to be no label at all (e.g. fair use, public domain, common creative, gnu) it will prob be deleted fairly soon. if I can be of help, please let me know at my talk page. thanks. Cavebear42 17:05, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

that one works for me. I wasn't ware we had a logo "fair use" tag. i read the page and i think that this works. next time im at my folks place ill try to get a photo of my eagle so we have a little higher res shot. thanks for fixing that. Cavebear42 03:01, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

no, i wouldnt think that the page should be changed to reflect the fact that it is only of famous people. the fact that it is in an encyclopedia alone suggest that it is only of famous people. see List of Jews for a list that wasn't meant to be all inclusive. Cavebear42 02:32, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Kaiju[edit]

In reply to your query at User talk:Jerzy, i was not aiming at the character bios. My two biggest concerns continue to be

  • copyediting (certainly misspellings, and (while i don't remember noticing either way) potentially grammar), and
  • what Antaeus Feldspar fixed, probably something like 75% of completely, by rewriting the intro to reveal the most fundamental fact about the subject: may i describe that fact as the article's tenuous hold on reality, without offending you? I hasten to add that i don't question your hold on reality, but "tone" captured pretty well for me the failure of the article to be explicit about the crucial matter of context. WP differs from the Encyclopedia Galactica in that EG is a fictional 'pedia (not just a work of fiction) within the Foundation Trilogy; its content suits it to be read by the fictional people of Hari Selden's time, and by mid-20th-century recreational readers who practice "willing suspension of disbelief" in order to read the entries from Imperial subjects' point of view. The version i tagged was written in a similar fashion, suitable for people in the KBB universe and people who are on some level playing at being in that universe. WP is not only real, but factual and intended primarily for readers who are reading for the sake of the facts and only secondarily (if at all) to be entertained; articles about fictions need to acknowledge them as such, and more importantly give them a context that indeed clarifies their role in the fictional universe, but does so in order to make clear their role in the factual universe. (Pick out a few of your favorite fictional works or fictional characters or concepts, and read our articles on them.) IMO, there's still work to be done in that respect, and IMO AF shares that opinion -- or they'd probably have removed the tag themself.

My best advice to you is not advice on how to fix this problem (tho i would hope more detailed attention to the spelling and grammar is an immediate further contribution you could make to the article). I urge you to let the tags sit for a week or two, and wait for an editor who's experienced in WP style to look at the tags (maybe after editing, but more likely, once the time comes, without otherwise editing) and say "What? There's nothing here needing fixing; tags, begone!" You might even, since you seem to have a substantial sense of investment in the article, ride herd on it and put the tags back, as i did, with a summary like "Let's be *sure* it's gotten all the attention it can use", if the editor who removes them is not experienced enough to assure you that it's up to snuff. And when you're pretty sure it's fixed for the time being, learn to use the Page history to review the nature of the changes made, and consider learning by example from those editors, who may be the most valuable colleagues you'll have here (until the next (shall we say) Learning Opportunity that you decide to write from scratch).
I think you're off to a great start here, and look forward to working more with you as you find your voice. Thanks for your question. [smile]
--Jerzy(t) 18:03, 2005 Jan 18 (UTC)

Well, sir! Your response repeatedly put the least friendly intepretation on my words that were intended to be supportive. Your assumption of good intentions is so far intact, but i assume that you will prove unsuitable to this site where collaborative editing is of the essence and thus learning from one's colleagues is crucial, and i sha'n't waste waste further keystsrokes on you. If i'm mistaken, i'll learn that gradually by seeing you behaving differently than you have with me. --Jerzy(t) 15:00, 2005 Jan 19 (UTC)

I fully accept your gracious apology, and i'm pleased and encouraged by the responsible attitudes you express along with it. While we try here not to hide problems under too much politeness, no one -- not even the vandals and PoV-warriors -- deserves to be humiliated, and i regret any appearance of wishing ill to you, in any form.
There is much more that might be said, but i don't think i should further presume to instruct you. You are not a Jedi yet (well, hell, who is?), but the resources for learning one's way around WP are enormous and even hard to avoid.

Harry Potter pics[edit]

I appreciate the images you have been adding, but could you not replace the ones that are already there? There is room for more than one pic on a page, you know.

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:Steveburns.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images because its copyright status is disputed. Promophoto[edit]

You could use {{Promophoto}} as long as you list a known source. Either a link to a page that designates the image as a promotional photo or a reference that can be traced or documentation from the photographer, etc. -- Thanks Nv8200p 18:38, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Promophoto2[edit]

Looks good to me. I removed the PUI tag from the image page. I also struck the entry for Image:Steveburns.jpg and noted the resolution on Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images -Thanks Nv8200p 20:42, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I have now reopened the notice board, if you are interested in contributing new topics, or in nominating articles for the Collaboration of the Week, which also received a revamp. Please post on the project's talk page if you show interest. Mike H 02:48, Jun 19, 2005 (UTC)

I left your photo in my edit, but added 2 more[edit]

Martinman11,

I saw your request that we leave your photo edit on Jimbo's page; I did as you requeed, but I added to more to bring balance to the force: An inclusionist's compromise, using the two other recently used photos (not the sockpuppet one, lol.

By the way, does your log in name mean "Martian" man, as in little green men from Mars, regarding your line of work, "student hot air balloon pilot," or does it mean something else? Thx, --GordonWattsDotCom 1 July 2005 02:16 (UTC)

  • In answer to your comments on my page, thank you; With respect to your statement "As for the "student balloon pilot" part or your statement, I didn't understand clearly what you where asking," I was loosely connecting a "space man Martian" with hot air baloons, thinking you were interested in outer space or astronomy —especially in contect with your humorous way of explaining where you are, using space terms:

"I was born in Kentucky, USA, North America, Western Hemisphere, Earth, the Solar System, Local Fluff, Orion Arm, Milky Way, Local Group, Virgo Supercluster, the Universe, Infinity"

Not that it's really a major thing, but I see that the on screen text of your page link is "Hoekenheef." I was wondering about that... (Also, it is hard to believe that there is a "Martinman" someplace besides you, but the world is a big place.)--GordonWattsDotCom 1 July 2005 02:39 (UTC)

    • Whoah! There sure are a lot of people who like that user name -I was surprised when I saw that Yahoo usernames search. Beam me up, Scotty! there are too many Martians on earth!--GordonWattsDotCom 1 July 2005 03:03 (UTC)

(from my talk page)

Thanks for the improvement of a section of my user page. That was a kind thing of you to do and it was appreciated. -Hoekenheef 2 July 2005 03:33 (UTC)

No problemo. It just took a second to remove the line break and make the paragraph whole again.--GordonWattsDotCom 2 July 2005 03:44 (UTC)

Vote[edit]

A vote has been called on the Nundu article. Since its been a few weeks since discussion was last posted, I am letting everyone who posted a comment know about the vote.

Image:Eagle.gif listed for deletion[edit]

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:Eagle.gif, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in its not being deleted. Thank you. —MetsBot 19:45, 9 December 2006 (UTC) I moved it to Image:Eagle Scout youth patch.gif, since a user uploaded the image of the Eagle car symbol at Eagle.gif. Consensus[edit]

On Wikipedia, consensus is not a majority. Wikipedia is not a majoritarian democracy explains it in more detail. For vfd, we tend to go for a 65-70% vote in order for it to be considered a "consensus". A plurality of 1 is not a consensus. In the end, it doesn't matter for your purposes since a no consensus vote means that the article is kept. --Woohookitty 22:41, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Hangman[edit]

What I meant is that it shouldn't go beyond one game at a time, but i only said that because i didn't quite understand that only one was happening at a time. Sure i'll run a game! Just tell me on my talk page when you want me too. Oh, incedentaly, when you told me to go to your talk page, you linked here, not to your talk page :). --Quadraxis 00:35, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oh, but i won't be able to do it this weekend, so if it finishes during then, i'll habe to wait, but next week should be fine --Quadraxis 03:03, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can do the hangman this week (Hangman 7) --Quadraxis 01:42, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm all ready for some hangman, so if your fine with me taking over for a little while, i'm raring to go. --Quadraxis 01:55, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for the info. How should i tell you the answer? I could translate it into binary, and you can translate it back... --Quadraxis

I have a question. Please check out the Hangman Game, and then the history. What if someone posts a allready posted letter and doesn't give their name, like 70.249.74.166 did? And what if they give the answer to the game in the history note? Should i assume they are answering it? I just need a second opinion, i was going to go for Game 7 completed. (oh, and i'll run game 8 if that's ok) --Quadraxis 01:47, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please read my comment in the AFD discussion and reconsider your vote in light of the fact that you seem to have misunderstood the criterium for deletion as little content when it is actually little notability. --WAvegetarian 22:45, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am attempting to revitalize the WikiHangman Tournament. Seeing as the page has been around since last year, I have decided to contact all interested users ("interested" being defined as one who had added their name to the signup list) and see if they are still interested.

Which is why I am contacting you today. If you are still interested in the tournament, please bold your name in the signup list. And if you aren't, no big deal, just remove your name from the list. Thank you for your time, and I hope to see you there! (Though, admittedly, I don't know what a "referee" would do :P) — Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 20:17, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Homer hickam2004.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. RobertGtalk 16:08, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Neville_longbottom_hppoa.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

It has been determined there is a *lot* of work to do yet remaining for Louisville-related subjects, and therefore we would definitely appreciate your presence. If by chance you are unable to join us, that's all right, but if you can, please tell other Louisvillians about this worthy project.
