Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Primary Structures (1966 exhibition). Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. Michael Bolus[edit]
Watcha General Why not an external link to a web site of an artist mentioned in the article? Maybe a link to a wikipedia page would be better and then include the link to his web site on that page? - If Michael Bolus had a Wikipedia page, it would be perfectly reasonable to link to it from his entry at Primary Structures (1966 exhibition). However, he does not. We do not link content within the body of articles here to external content as you did; see WP:EL. If Bolus is sufficiently notable to justify an article here, consider creating it. Having read the guide lines suggested by the General i found this: Some acceptable links include those that contain further research that is accurate and on-topic I consider adding a link to the artists web-site, containing pictures of his work and further information to be within these guidelines. - External links of the kind described in that section of the External links article are those that go at the bottom of an article in an External links section, containing external links that are immediately relevant to the topic of the article containing the section. Unfortunately, the scope of the Primary Structures (1966 exhibition) does not include detailed information about Michael Bolus other than his having been an exhibitor there. re user name[edit]
Hello MarchJuly Thank you for your input. I am Michael Bolus' stepson. He died in 2013 and since his death there has been an increased interest in his work. i have built a website for his work and would like to get an increased knowledge of him to the outside world. Most interest will be from academics. I am not attempting to sell anything, all his work is in majeor galleries around the world. Do you think this will pass or should i go to my own name to attempt this wikipedia presence? Can i change the title of the article from my wiki user name to his? - Hi Saul (Michale Bolus Studio). A few things about your choice of user name. Part of problem is that it sounds like the name of a business. Editors are generally advised not to choose such things as their user name because it could be mistakenly seen as an attempt at promotion or one of the other things that Wikipedia is not really intended to be. It's possible that it could be flagged by another editor or administrator as a violation of Wikipedia's user name policy (specifically WP:CORPNAME), which in turn could lead to your account being blocked by an administrator. Another problem is that it sounds like the name of a real person. There's nothing wrong with using your own name as your user name (there are some drawbacks to doing that though), but generally editors are not allowed to use the real names of other people per WP:REALNAME. Right now, this is probably not too much of an issue, but it could cause confusion and problems if someday an article is created about your step-father. In that case, there would be a situation in which an editor whose user name is essentially the same as your step-father's is editing an article about him. Experienced editors will immediately see this as a red flag because it creates the appearance that you have a conflict-of-interest (more on that below) with respect to the article. Editors are not prohibited from editing articles of subjects they are somehow connected to, but it is something that is highly discouraged and viewed with suspicion. So, you should give consideration to changing your user name as explained in the notification I posted in the above thread.
- Regarding COI editing, this is something that Wikipedia takes quite seriously. Wikipedia articles are intended to reflect what independent published reliable sources say about something, and only those subjects which have received signficant coverage in multiple reliable sources are generally considered to be notable (in a Wikipedia sense) for an article. Part of the problem with COI editing is that it can be very hard to maintain a neutral point of view when writing about people or things we are connected to: we automatically think they are Wikipedia notable because they are notable to us personally. In addition, any article content which might be challenged by another editor is supposed to be supported by a reliable source so that it can be verified by anyone reading the article. COI editors tend to have lots of "inside knowledge" about the subject they are connected to and naturally want to include all of that in the article because they know it to be true, but Wikipedia considers the stuff that we personally know to be true to be origninal reserach unless it can be (once again) verified by a reliable source. This may sound weird to someone new here, but Wikipedia is more concerned with verifiability than it is with truth in this context. This does not mean Wikipedia articles are intended to include only falsehoods, but verifiability is very important when it comes to articles. Another problem with COI editors is that they often tend to be single-purpose accounts. There's nothing wrong per se with being an SPA, but focusing specifically on a certain article or genre of articles (especially stuff you may have a COI with) could be lead other editors to (mistakenly) assume you are more interested in promoting something close to you than in helping to build an encyclopedia or perhaps more interested in writing a memorial for you step-father. Wikipedia is mainly based upon collaborative editing where anyone can edit any article at anytime and we don't own any articles we create or edit. Article content is ideally determined through consensus, so it can sometimes be hard for COI editors to see others making changes that they might not understand or agree with. I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide for some more information about COI editing.
- If you feel that your step-father meets WP:N (more specifically WP:ARTIST), then you can try and create and submit a draft about him yourself via Wikipedia:Articles for creation or you can request an article be written about him at Wikipedia:Requested articles. Regardless of which route you choose, you will need to establish that he has received the significant coverage in independent reliable sources (primary sources do not count when it comes to establishing notability) for an article to be approved and avoid being nominated for deletion by another editor.
