Infoboxes of observatories: follow-up

Hi Mike, I just noticed that the linkage of IAU codes in the infobox doesn't work properly when an article has more than one observatory code assigned on Wikidata. For example Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (G91 and 696). Thought that would be an interesting challenge for you to solve. Best, Rfassbind – talk 22:11, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

@Rfassbind: Am I missing something, or is this just a mistake in the Wikidata info? G91 should be 2MASS? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:15, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Sure, but then 2MASS has several observatory codes... This all has to do that a code of an "observatory" can be many things: somtimes it's a limited survey on an single instrument and sometimes its an entire cluster of observatories (La Silla). As far as I can see, there is no way around it: an article/wikidata page can have several codes, and a code may appear on several articles/wikidata pages. Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory may even show V07 (i.e. PAIRITEL; Peters Automated IR Imaging Telescope, originally used for 2MASS as well), which is located in Chile. This is because the article Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory may also refer to the Organization rather than just the physical site on Mount Hopkins in Arizona. The relation of articles and codes is m:m, not 1:1. Best, Rfassbind – talk 23:18, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Hmm, I'm not sure how this can be done. @RexxS: any ideas? I'm currently doing {{{code|{{#if:{{#invoke:Wikidata|getValue|P717|FETCH_WIKIDATA}}|[[List of observatory codes#{{#invoke:Wikidata|getValue|P717|FETCH_WIKIDATA}}|{{#invoke:Wikidata|getValue|P717|FETCH_WIKIDATA}}]]}}}}}. Perhaps some sort of addition to the module that lets people define pre- and post- text for each entry retrieved from Wikidata would work, although I'm not sure that would work with using the values both in the link and as the displayed text... Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:56, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

For your hard and dedicated work on the awesome {{infobox artwork/wikidata}} and for fixing a bug there before I even had the chance to report it on the template's talk page. RESPECT 💪 😸

@Spinster: Thank you! And thank you for using the template! Mike Peel (talk) 14:36, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
No, thank YOU for working on it, it makes me so happy! I'll be trying it out on quite a few 'interesting' artworks on my watchlist, maybe I'll discover more issues as we go. Spinster (talk) 16:17, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

  • Did you know: On 29 June 2017, there were 1,261 administrators on the English Wikipedia – the exact number of administrators as there were ten years ago on 29 June 2007. Since that time, the English Wikipedia has grown from 1.85 million articles to over 5.43 million.

Template:Infobox World Heritage Site

You have made 15 changes to Template:Infobox World Heritage Site in the last day, many of which appear to be attempts at debugging. One of your recent changes has caused citation errors in some pages (see the template's talk page for details).

Edit summaries like "Not sure why the label is still showing, removing whitespace to see if that fixes it" indicate that you should be making changes in the template's sandbox and using a testcases page to see if those changes work. Please experiment in the sandbox before making changes to a template that is used in over 1,000 pages. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:37, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

@Jonesey95: I'm working on migrating the calls to this infobox to use information from Wikidata. Most of the changes I've been making to the template have been simple format tweaks, and I'm discovering those issues as the template is migrated (and I'm fixing them when I spot the errors). I should make more use of the sandbox, though, and I'll try to do that more in the future. The citation issues are due to a recent change to Module:Wd so that it calls Template:Cite Q, and I've raised this issue at Template_talk:Cite_Q#CS1_errors:_URL.E2.80.93wikilink_conflict. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 01:51, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
Do try to use the sandbox. I have edited many templates and it's usually only after I have gotten myself into trouble that I head for the sandbox. I never regret it. It's so much easier to mess around there than it is to do the careful thinking that is required to make perfect edits to heavily used templates.
And thanks for the explanation about the chain of effects that led to this situation. I only looked one level deep, saw your changes to the Infobox, and assumed that since only WHS pages were showing up in the CS1 error category, that your edits were to blame. I should learn not to assume. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:06, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
There are a few things wrong.
  1. The documentation doesn't much like actually. For locmapin its comments are wrong. (And like 98% of documentation, they don't give much useful information.)
  2. There are several parameters of {{Infobox}} not open to {{Infobox World Heritage Site}} – below, qid, etc. The main problem is that the Infobox World Heritage Site can be both its own site, and also a higher site; e.g. Imperial City, Huế and Huế which have different wikidata pages (Imperial City of Hue (Q10769129) and Huế (Q36167)). This gives two different coordinates, as well as other details. I think it needs to have |qid= within {{Infobox World Heritage Site}}.
