Vancouver Wikipedians Meetup

Greetings, you're getting this spam (courtesy of Tawkerbot) because you were listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Vancouver. In short, we're trying to have a meetup and we'd appreciate it if you'd join our Yahoo Group setup to figure out a time/place that would work. You can find the group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vancouver_wikipedians/. If you have any questions feel free to make a post there or on the WikiProject page.

Happy Editing!

Re: Geri Halliwell

I only meant to make this edit, I didn't mean to do that. I may have done it accidentally, or another person whose IP address is the same as mine (if it's possible) has done it, but I can assure you that it was not my intention.
200.138.194.254 15:20, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for understanding! Don't worry, I will be careful from now on.

Megan Slankard Comment

Regarding your comment on my talk page - I did attempt to determine who was responsible for the edit. I am fairly new to editing in Wikipedia, and perhaps I made an error, but in the versions I compared one by one it did seem to show me that you were the one who inserted that comment. If I'm wrong I'm sorry, but still it seemed curious that with all your edits to a relatively small article you didn't delete that odd sentence. I trust now that I was wrong, and I meant no offense. Apex156

Hi smileydude66, I have not yet added any citations to the Best of Geri arictle, neither have I removed the tags. However Virgin records will issue a press release sometime in December/January at which point the information will be available on Halliwell's website. Also the album title will almost definitly change. Apex156 10:47, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

P.S thank you for your welcome

Hi Smileydude, I am very please to hear that you are a big Geri fan! I will give as much information as I can (without getting into too much trouble) concerning the release. At present Venus is the only track being drafted for U.K. single release and a video will be filmed in Feburary. Both Venus and Jump the Gun have been produced by Absolute and are very dancefloor orientatied al a Bag It Up. Flow is still in production but will certainly be included on the album, whereas So Real may change in favor of a track written by Gregg Alexander. Also Virgin will be spending more on promotion for the compilation than any other Geri release. I will keep you posted. Apex156 11:52, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi smileydude, In case you have not already been made aware "Best of Geri" will be Geri Halliwell's last album. Talking to both OK magazine (UK) and BBC News Geri confirmed that after this release she will no longer be pursuing music and will instead be raising Bluebell Madonna. She also confirmed that she wanted to reform the Spice Girls at Live8 but that Melanie Brown pulled out at the last minute. She now says that she would not rejoin the Spice Girls for £1 billion! Ina Lu

Smileydude,

On MSHK Beauties (www.misshkbeauties.com/mci2007/news/index.htm Ina's sister is called "IVY LUI" not Yee Wan Lu. Since her sister is named after Lui, it should be Lui. Also on {http://beauty.geocities.jp/misschinesepageant/live20.html} and (http://beauty.geocities.jp/misschinesepageant/), Ina's last name is Lui. Please fix it back. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Sam72991 (talkcontribs).

Image:Vanna White.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Vanna White.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 48 hours after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 15:56, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Why Was I Blocked?!?!

I've been good, I swear! Why was I blocked???

<<unblock|I don't even know why I was blocked! There was no reason given on my talk page. When I tried to edit a page, all that was said was I was on an indefinite block because of something called "open proy". Huh???>> smileydude66 06:16, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Use of open proxies is forbidden.—Ryūlóng (竜龍) 06:17, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Huh??? What's an open proxy? smileydude66 06:18, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

I'm sorry, Ryūlóng. I'm not very familiar with computer language and the articles + help pages are kinda confusing. Can you tell me what my next steps are? It doesn't seem like it was my fault or was anything I did that got me blocked, right? Thank you. smileydude66 06:33, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

(reduce indent) It means that the proxy that you are using is blocked due to vandalism. The information is listed on the article that Ryulong provided on open proxy. Real96 06:36, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Also, try restarting the computer or disconnecting the modem for a while, and reconnecting it to the computer to gain a new IP address. This maybe a static IP address. Real96 06:45, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
I will try that! Thanks, Real96. Although, I'm still confused about everything... smileydude66 06:47, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Clearing an autoblock

Please note that we cannot unblock you at this time because you have not given us the information we need to look into your block. It is very likely that you are not personally blocked. If you are prevented from editing, it may be because you are autoblocked or blocked because of your IP address. Without further details there is nothing further we can do to review or lift your block. If you are still autoblocked by the time you read this message, please follow these instructions:

  1. If you have a Wikipedia account, please ensure that you are logged in.
    Your account name will be visible in the top right of this page if you are.
    If it isn't, try bypassing your web browser's cache.
  2. Try to edit the Sandbox.
  3. Copy the {{unblock-auto|...}} code generated for you under the "Autoblocked?" section.
  4. Paste the code at the bottom of your user talk page and click save.

If you are not blocked from editing the sandbox then the autoblock on your IP address has already expired and you can resume editing. --  Netsnipe  ►  06:51, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

<<unblock reviewed|1=Sorry, there was no "Autoblock" section in the block. I've tried turning the computer off and unplugging my cable modem to no avail. I'm still at the same IP address it seems. Any other suggestions? smileydude66 07:42, 16 May 2007 (UTC)|decline=No. We cannot unblock you because you are not blocked. Try the above instructions again. — Sandstein 10:47, 16 May 2007 (UTC)>>

Ah. MediaWiki:Blockedtext no longer generates unblock-auto for you. So in the meantime, please provide your IP address in a new unblock request and we'll take a look at it. --  Netsnipe  ►  12:51, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

The problem appears to be that people now see MediaWiki:Autoblockedtext, and Template:Autoblock referenced a nonexistent section "Autoblocked?" in it. I've fixed this. Sandstein 18:29, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
You should see a message similar to MediaWiki:Autoblockedtext. It should contain an unblock template to be copied, like this: {{unblock-auto|1=$3|2=$2|3=$1|4=$5}}. If that is so, could you try it? Sandstein 18:25, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Decline reason: You are editing from a permanently blocked IP, see {{checkuserblock}}. Please contact Jpgordon (talk · contribs) by e-mail if you think you have a good faith reason to edit Wikipedia. — Sandstein 06:31, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

"Good faith reason to edit Wikipedia"?!?! Well, this is great... I've been nothing but supportive since I've joined Wikipedia a year ago and have been constantly trying to revert vandal edits made by other abusive users if you check my edit history. I cannot believe that I have been declined an unblocking request for an autoblock from my IP address that was not even my fault to begin with. This is ridiculous. I've been trying to deal with this for the past 24 hours patiently and quite frankly, I am exhausted from this. I guess this means the end of my editing days from Wikipedia. I am not amused. smileydude66 06:57, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
PS: Excuse my tone in this entry, nothing personal against you, Sandstein, it's just that I find that I am trapped in this situation framed for a crime I didn't even commit to begin with!
I understand your frustration, but since you are operating from a checkuser-blocked address (i.e., an IP that was used for persistent heavy vandalism), we can't help you. You would need to contact a checkuser operator to ask them to check whether the IP is safe to be unblocked now. Sandstein 08:34, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

What A Joke!

{helpme} Alright... it's been 3 days since I contacted user:Jpgordon via e-mail with a friendly plea for help since he/she was the admin who blocked the IP address to begin with... However, no response. Not even an "I can't help you" message. This person simply ignored me. I've been completely supportive and have been taking all the advised steps to try and undo this autoblocking of my IP address which, may I emphasize again, was not my fault at all. Are there any steps left to take?! smileydude66 06:21, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

I have mentioned the problem on Jpgordon's talk page, I think that is all that can be done - apart from finding a mailing list or emailing a checkuser person.--Commander Keane 06:35, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

First of all, thank you, .--Commander Keane for your help. Secondly, since I've read the comment on Jpgordon's talk page, I see I'm not alone in this mess. I'd like to point out that IP Address 64.59.144.85 is issued by Shaw Communications in Canada. I, myself am located in Vancouver, Canada. If the same IP address is issued for the vicinity around me, that would be a big residential area inside the city of Vancouver. I would think that there would be a lot of Wikipedia editors within this geographic area. Just FYI. That is probably the reason behind the large amount of unblock request and complaints for this particular block. ( By the way, how DO I lodge a formal complaint about this issue? I'd like to file one. ) smileydude66 08:48, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Well, until you're unblocked, you're pretty much stuck. You could probably formally file at WP:RFC or informally at WP:ANI. However, three days is a little premature - it is a long weekend, after all. --Haemo 09:49, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Actually, a formal complaint involving a checkuser finding should probably go to the m:Ombudsman commission or WP:RFAR, as the community has no juristiction over the application of checkuser results when applied to the m:Privacy policy. However, I can guarantee that these complaints would be dismissed within hours. Daniel 10:23, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
We are apologizing for the inconvenience, but due to the nature of the block, you'll need to wait for Jpgordon to come back to you. I am rremoving the helpme tag. If you need further help don't hesitate to put it back! -- lucasbfr talk 10:33, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
In response to Haemo's comment... I posted the message 3 days after I e-mailed Jpgordon because I noticed that through Jpgordon's edit history that he/she has made several edits after I e-mailed him/her. Therefore, they must have noticed that I've sent an e-mail during that time and still ignored my request for help. Anyways, thank you for everyone in supporting my case... I guess I will just have to wait until Jpgordon's response. smileydude66 01:58, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

I have just read the comment Jpgordon put on his talkpage in response to not unblocking several of the users of the same blocked IP address as I was... Sure, they have not edited in awhile and may be a user in question, however, this person has not even mentioned my edit history! I have been an active user since May 3, 2006 and has over 1000 edits! And the fact that Jpgordon has not personally contacted me on my talk page or e-mailed me to explain the situation at all is not professional at all. I am not a vandalizer!!! Please stop treating me like one!!! How can I try to resolve this situation when the other party (Jpgordon) refuses to even contact me?!?!?! smileydude66 02:08, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
I have placed another request on the page for the admin to reply to you directly. --After Midnight 0001 02:46, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Thank you, After Midnight! Appreciate it. :) smileydude66 05:41, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
  • Hi. I will not argue if some other checkuser operator evaluates the data and comes to a different conclusion than I did. A vast amount of abuse has been coming from that IP, and it's a published open proxy. Our policies require that such proxies be hardblocked. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 14:51, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

First of all, thank you for finally replying to me about this, Jpgordon. I'm not arguing that the IP address has been used abusively, I'm just wondering how I can continue editing Wikipedia as I am not one of the abusive editor(s). I mean, since this IP address is now hardblocked, as you call it, can I change my IP address? And, if so, how abouts would I go about doing that? I'm just looking for a solution so I can continue to contribute positively to Wikipedia. Any suggestions? smileydude66 19:56, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
You can edit from a different computer, or request that jpgordon disable the autoblock. Of course, some of the abuse may be coming from logged-in users editing from that IP... ~ Magnus animuM ≈ √∞ 20:44, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately, if it's a open proxy it won't be unblocked. You'll need to use a connexion not using a open proxy. -- lucasbfr talk 20:48, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
OY, this sucks! The IP address is from my home computer and I'm not about to change my internet provider just so I can edit Wikipedia again (I'm not THAT obsessed). Guess I'm not editing Wikipedia anymore! Goodbye. smileydude66 21:55, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
Maybe you can try to get a new DHCP address from your ISP. Try contacting them if you don't know how to do this yourself. --After Midnight 0001 01:00, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I can edit again! Maybe my IP address was rotated to a different one now! Yay! smileydude66 05:10, 24 May 2007 (UTC) P.S.: Thanks for the advice anyways, After Midnight!

Nevermind... That was a tease... I was editing for exactly 15 minutes, and the IP block showed up again. Sigh... smileydude66 05:42, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:TVB Drama To Grow with Love logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:TVB Drama To Grow with Love logo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Aksibot 08:52, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
