Domestic pig

Just because sections are small does not mean they require removal. Basically all domestic farm animal articles have a section (which is prone to expansion) about the animal as food. See examples such as sheep and goat. Even horse has a paragraph or so about it, despite the fact that it's not the main purpose. Steven Walling 07:24, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • The emphasis seems to be upon "traditional" methods of Eastern European nations rather than the "industrialized" methods of First World nations such as the US and UK. The emphasis should be upon the First World. Asian and African methods have been neglected. Do we really need to know that Croatians slaughter pigs in the fall so they can have a roast at Christmas? This doesn't further our understanding of pig slaughter but only our understanding of Croatian Christmas customs. The article is not about Croatian Christmas customs. I wonder if we really need such an article anyway? Is pig slaughter so much different from cow, sheep, or goat slaughter that pigs need a stand alone article? Generally speaking, isn't each animal stunned in some way, hoisted to the ceiling, its throat slit, and the blood drained? "Processing" should not be described here because the article is about slaughter not processing. When the animal is dead, the slaughter has ended. Processing, butchering, packaging, selling, and cooking are a whole different bag and shouldn't be described here. Couldn't all these animals be dealt with in one article with separate sections for each to describe any differences in slaughter? Do we really need spearate articles on each animal? Secondly, the article has virtually no citations and reads like the author was present at a "traditional" Croatian slaughter and decided to write an article about it. This is original research. It's been tagged for three years for lack of citations and no attempt has been made to cite sources. Unless the article is cited, it should be sent to AfD. There are MoS violations such as this: "After it's cut into pieces". The contraction "it's" is not used at Wikipedia. Statemetns such as "In the family hog pen of yesteryear, the "pièce de résistance" was the pork loin which was often eaten the first night." This statement is not about slaughter but about food customs and doesn't belong here. Anyway, if it stands, it (and other statements) should be cited. I'm removing the pic of the pig being drained of its blood and the carcasses. These pics will offend not only animal lovers but other people as well and are not critical to understanding pig slaughter. The pic of the caracasses belongs in an article about butchering not slaughter. Hope this helps! NYFernValley (talk) 14:53, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pig Sanctuary

Hi, I just added some new sources to the article on the pig sanctuary, sounds like it is an awesome organization. It looks like there is the potential for more expansion there, maybe enough to get on WP:Did You Know.
