Concensus

[edit]

Hi @Only Objective Truth: Wikipedia is built around consensus and I noticed you changed information on Andy Ogles. I don't know if you saw it or not, but there was a comment saying to not change that section until consensus was made on the article's talk page. You can join in the discussion there. Thanks, Schminnte (talk contribs) 22:02, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! It said not to edit unless you leave a comment, which I did. Let me know if I'm understanding this wrong. Thanks. Only Objective Truth (talk) 14:15, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It said to "See talk page as per comment"; 'comment' there refers to the invisible markup placed in the lead next to "far-right", and that says

Please do not change before discussing first on the talk page

which is generally interpreted to mean that the discussion should reach a consensus before a change is made from the status quo. CharredShorthand (talk) 14:30, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are understanding this wrong. Simply leaving a comment is not sufficient -- you should wait for the discussion to reach consensus. That's why we have discussions in the first place. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:31, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What will it take to reach a consensus? How is that determined? New to this. It seems there are some in a camp that believe it's fine to use a specific lead in label, and some that are not. How does consensus happen on this? Only Objective Truth (talk) 14:56, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:CONSENSUS. Schminnte (talk contribs) 15:17, 18 January 2023 (UTC) (edited 15:39, 18 January 2023 (UTC))[reply]

Consensus isn't exactly just majority agreement since it is not a vote. It's more fuzzy and complex. CharredShorthand (talk) 15:30, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(just trying to make it a bit more simple) Do read the link I sent though. Schminnte (talk contribs) 15:33, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reading it now, thanks. Only Objective Truth (talk) 19:48, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
