University of Wisconsin-Madison biographies

[edit]

Hello, you've recently added quite some articles about people from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Could you please make them look a bit more like a biography? Here are some helpful links:

For more help please ask the Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. Thank you, 32X 01:36, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are some problems with the article which has now being put up for speedy deletion.

No being the author I can and did remove the tag, but the article will probably be renominated for deletion.

What is particularly needed are 3rd party sources for her activities, to shown that they are recognized as notable. Anything, print or web will help, but at least some of them must be from sources other than his own group's newsletter or magazine. This has to be done within the next day or two to do any good.

I have also looked at some of your contributions on other U Wisc people, and the same applies to them. They must have sources---there are many people engaged in the useful task of checking biographical articles and proposing deletion of those without sources. Since all WP articles must have such 3rd part sources, they are perfectly right to do so. I suggest you first take care of these before adding more--there is no point in doing the work if it is going to be deleted.
  • I am trying to defend it, but will not be able to without more material.
  • If you do not do this immediately, the article will probably be deleted in a day or two--though not by me.
  • A final point It is necessary to say something in the first sentence something to demonstrate notability, like
"A.B. is a notable (whatever), , winner of the Nobel prize (or whatever applies).. Use the exact wording, including either the word "notable" or "internationally-known" or "nationally-known"; do not use "famous" May sound silly, but that is what people look for here.
I apologize for not having the time to help personally.DGG 01:52, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

strong advice

[edit]

Stop and go more slowly. And ,make certain that none of these bios are copied from the persons faculty page or other page. Such articles are , rightfully, considered copyright violations on Wikipedia, as it is not clear that the person would have given permission to release it under GFDL , or even appear here. You MUST get letters of authorization from each individual person accepting release into the public domain under the GFDL license. Neither I, you, or anyone, will be able to prevent the deletion of copyvio articles. DGG 01:58, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

Having discovered some of your newly created pages on the list of orphan pages, I have flagged some for attention of other editors or administrators. Wikipedia is not a repository for university staff lists. Check out Wikipedia:Notability (academics) for a guideline for who is suitable for inclusion. Perhaps some that don't merit their own page might be mentioned on or merged into the University page, if you feel the information is relevant to the discussion there. Some articles appear to be of notable people: it would be helpful if you could reference these as suggested above. Also, these need to be wikilinked, as many remain dead-end (ie no links out) and orphaned (no links in), which means it is hard for any researcher or interested party to discover the pages. Please do not think I am pursuing you personally: random searching merely led me to a series of articles which could be improved. Since you are the original creator, you might be interested in this improvement (or in preventing the deletion of articles you consider notable).Gwinva 17:02, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Eric J. Knuth

[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Eric J. Knuth, by Reywas92 (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Eric J. Knuth seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Eric J. Knuth, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Eric J. Knuth itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 18:21, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What to do next

[edit]

Please look at these articles again. They were all of them together nominated for deletion, which was not correct, but they are going to be renominated separately. They cannot all of them stand on their own on the information provided, and more work must be done. Please do not expect others to do it for you. If, as seems possible, you are doing this as part of your job, you ought to do it well enough to stand up. They must show individual notability, according to WP:PROF. This can be done by a listing of books and selected papers published, showing they have been reviewed in major sources or frequently cited in professional publications. alternatively, it can be done by textbooks written, if they can be shown to be widely adopted in other universities. If you need help with finding this information, Wisconsin has a superlative library system, and all of the reference librarians there are certain to know about Wikipedia, & will show you how to find the information. And please be absolutely certain none of them are copied fro ma web site or printed material, even in part, or they will surely be immediately deleted as soon as this has been verified. correction of these articles

[edit]

For the record, i emailed you this afternoon asking you to please pay attention to these articles, and look at the suggestions made here for their improvement in order to prevent deletion. You acknowledged my email, but have done nothing further. Are you intending to abandon the articles? Or do you expect others to rewrite them--remove the copyright violations, insert the information about published books and journal articles and research grants that might go for notability, find references to their work. This is a cooperative project, and in my opinion you are not being responsible--either to wikipedia, or to the subjects. I note that you apparently are a public relations professional employed by the University, and have been presumably been writing these articles in that connection. COI has already been referred to--sometimes COI prevents the writing of good articles about notable people according to the WP practices are rules. DGG (talk) 01:37, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of B. Bradford Brown

[edit]

A tag has been placed on B. Bradford Brown requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Proposed deletion of Adam Gamoran

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Adam Gamoran, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. File permission problem with File:Martinnystrand.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Martinnystrand.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:39, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
