Title
Hi, I’ve got a little problem. The Samuel Jones (composer) for which there is currently an article is a different Samuel Jones from the one I’m writing about [1]! Both are composer however. How should I distinguish between them in the title?
I’m about to post my draft article at User:S.dedalus/drafts. If you have time to look it over that would be great. I’m a former student of Dr. Jones so I’m especially worried about objectivity on this one. Thanks! S.dedalus 23:46, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hey. That is an interesting one. I'd propose moving the incumbant to Samuel Jones (jazz musician) and replacing the current article with yours. We can then put a link at the top of each, directing to the other. When you are ready to upload, I can help you or talk you through how to do that, as its important to make sure its done properly so that the history moves with it. Also, links will have to be changed etc. Its pretty easy when you know how, though. I had a quick look at your draft and it looks good. I'll have a more detailed review tonight and let you know my thoughts. Rockpocket 02:48, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Vandalism
Hi, I hope you don’t mind me asking for a little more help when you have time. I need some help with user Danww he appears to be trying to find out how many times he can vandalize without being blocked. He was warned by NawlinWiki not create nonsense pages. He then created two more vandalisms on the John Coolidge Adams page. I then perhaps wrongly gave him the full {{subst:test4}} template because the vandalisms were blatant and intended to be offensive to homosexual people, and because he had created two more vandalisms after a warning. Now two days ago he vandalized the Michael Nyman page, then a few minutes later changed it back. Should I move to block him? Thanks! S.dedalus 05:35, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- Most administrators would not block him or her at the moment for two reasons. Firstly, it is over two weeks since the initial two edits and was probably a bit premature for a high level warning. Secondly, blocking is not punitive, blocks are simply issued to prevent ongoing damage to the project. Since the editor appears to have stopped vandalising again, he doesn't fit the criteria for blocking at WP:AIV. However, its perhaps worth leaving another message for him/her noting that all their edits have been vandalism and any further such edits will result in administrator action. Having had three warnings, any further vandalism would justify a block in my opinion - and I would be willing to do so if you let me know about further such edits from this editor in future. Rockpocket 06:22, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help. Yes, I agree that my warning was an overkill. I left Danww a note as per your suggestion. S.dedalus 07:22, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism to "Animal testing"
Thanks for your message (to 68.151.161.59). I apologize for what was an error on my part. When I loaded the page in question, the text under the image read "Enos the space chimp before insertion into the Hoes that got the big tittys in da back yard kick that shit all ova the hizzouse Mercury-Atlas 5 capsule in 1961." This being obvious vandalism, I attempted to revert it, but must have reverted to the wrong page. I did not make any other edits to the page, especially nothing "blatantly POV"
thanks for your concern

RP, it's always safer, if you have edited a page, to ask another admin to deal with problems there, unless it's unambiguous vandalism, which this isn't. I would deal with it for you, but I don't have time right now, although if I look in later or tomorrow and it's still an issue, I'll be happy to act. In the meantime, you might consider posting about it on WP:AN/I or WP:AN/3RR if he has violated 3RR. I would say his edit summary to you is also a violation of NPA/CIV. The best thing, in my view, is to advise him that he might be blocked for disruption (removing sourced material, lots of reverting, possible 3RR violation, insulting edit summary) without further warning if the behavior continues, but try posting on AN/I and see what others think. Request for Comment
Hello.
I'm trying to assist two of your members reach a consensus over who should and should not be in the article List of Lebanese people and also to the extent information about individuals should be expanded on in the list. As you guys are clearly among the most informed on the subject, I wonder if you would mind commenting. It would help if you could keep your comments on the topic of content, and not behaviour of the individuals, as personal conflict is already heavily influencing the dispute (as you can see from the statements). If we can resolve the content dispute, the locus of the conflict will be solved too without resorting to further administrative action. Thanks! Rockpocket 23:54, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I do not know why you decided to block me after what I wrote to you and since you know the consequences leading to my outburst against lcnj. You have seen that I was planning on retiring and how I was pulled back in. I am not of bad faith nor am I a vandal. I decided to stop discussing the article so that we could avoid more conflict. I expressed my anger towards lcnj because I did not understand why he would keep on following me after I left the article to him. It would be easy for you to avoid what I am writing, as I do not use lcnj's persuasive approch with the words in capital letters. Unblocked, I will leave Wikipedia and will only contribute to the articles I created. I wish to leave with a clean record and without worries. I ask you to discuss it with Lcnj and other administrators. I am sorry if I caused any disturbance to Lcnj or to you, as much has been caused to me. I am done. I just want to leave quietly. Jaber

Center on Animal Lib. Affairs
Hi, thanks for cleaning up the article. Just wondering, what are "weasel words," and what might have been those words in the article? thanks --C.lettinga 01:19, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi. Nice work on the article, by the way. "Weasel words" was a poor choice of term to use, actually, I should really have said "words to avoid". Major examples were:
- "...all of whom have been in jail or persecuted". In retrospect, perhaps you meant prosecuted, but we certainly can't say they were persecuted.
- "...rescuing or liberating animals". That is loaded language (in as much as the opposite opinion would be that they "stole" animals.) We try to use more neutral terms like "remove".
- "... leading academics, doctors, lawyers, researchers". Who says they are "leading" their field?
- Still, as I said, nice work and don't worry about these sort of things, as there will always be people around in the animal rights related articles to copy-edit. The major thing is to get content added and you did a fine job of that. Rockpocket 01:37, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Ah, understood. I'll try to avoid that sort of thing in the future...and sorry for all the grammar/spelling mistakes (like "persecute" instead of "prosecute"). The issue with specific citation from the Center's actual website (e.g. "academics, doctors, lawyers, reasearchers") that you noted on my talk page, is that there don't appear to be any sub-pages within their website. Very frustrating for direct linking. If you have any ideas on how to circumvent this problem, I'd appreciate it.--C.lettinga 05:50, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Linking directly to external pages
Hi, hope I'm not bothering you with this question. I just wrote a new article for Animal Liberation Front Supporters Group and was wondering if there was a way to directly link a name with an external webpage. (If you go there, you'll see that I referenced every current prisoner to their external page, and it just looks bad.) I'm sure one can do it, but I'm just not sure how. If you could let me know, tha'd be great.--C.lettinga 09:04, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Re Personal Attack
Hi,
I wrote a good two thirds of the RFK article and am getting tired of kids who saw 'Bobby' coming along and putting in boundless quantities of nonsense. I don't deny I lost my temper with the vandal in question. How can the article be locked from new editors? 3 months ago it was fine, now it's happening every day.
Thanks,

"Semi-protection can be requested here. I don't know whether the article will qualify - It depends on the frequency of the vandalism - but you could always list it and see what happens."

Hi Rockpocket. Thanks so much for your invitation of adoption: I'd love to be an adoptee of yours. Your new adoptee
Hi Rockpocket. I'm wondering, what sort of "administrative" (not "admin") tasks could I help with other than anti-vandalism? I'm starting to work with the so-called mediation cabal, and would be interested in other "backlog" issues that I could do. PS: if I don't respond nearly immediately at User:C.lettinga, drop me a line at User:C.lettingaAV since I might be there. Re: The Independent On Sunday
Hello again Rockpocket, may I thank you for your interest and concern with regard to the Independent On Sunday article. I appreciate your proposal of a merger, and indeed recognise the validity of the points you raise. However, I feel with time the article has the scope to mature and flesh out with its own unique information, which I am confident can be of value and worthy of independence from the larger scheme of things with the daily edition. This would allow for the phasing out of the explicitly copied content (most of which I did not personally add). With this in mind, it would be very soon to merge the articles immediately upon the page's creation, and prior to the opportunity to significantly build up a case for it through contributions to the article.
I am confident several areas could be expanded upon with much success, given the chance. If dubious, I could provide you with a list of my ideas and guarantee dates for their insertion! For example, a compelling case for the IoS' individuality and difference from the Independent with the fact that it has always maintained an almost entirely unique editorial team, always featuring different columnists throughout the breadth of the paper (which needs to be changed on the page as the info, copied not by me, is incorrect for the writers and columnists), is layed out completely differently and consists of unique supplements. I slighty resent that it is merely "a copy and paste job", considering my evident attempts at starting to individualise the page, although I am sure your intention was not to condescend my efforts. The Independent article seems rather long in the tooth, and in some instances long-winded, as it is, and I feel there is too much valid and self-distinguishing information regarding the IoS to be able to be sufficiently contained within the original article. Please do offer musings on this issue in light of the points I have respectfully attempted to raise. Many thanks The Geography Elite 17:38, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
The Independent On Sunday
I would like to propose we merge the existing info into a section of The Independent for now, whilst working on a complete full-blown shebang for the article on a drafts subsection of my page until it is worthy of independence.Addmclean 19:22, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

AR categories
RP, I saw you removed the animal rights movement cat from [Barry Horne] and replaced it with animal rights activists. I'm not sure this is a good idea. There are many people who are part of the movement but who aren't activists as such, and many others who are ambiguous. Is it not a better idea to categorize together people who regard themselves as part of the AR movement, without specifying what their roles are? Otherwise, we'll have ever-narrowing categories, and then choosing which category to put someone in will become almost a POV exercise. SlimVirgin (talk) 08:54, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hello, SV. The reason I moved Horne (and a few others) was because there the activists category is a subcategory of animal rights movement and, per WP:SUBCAT, I didn't really see much value in duplicating. With Horne's article beginning, "Barry Horne (1952–November 5, 2001) was a British animal rights activist...", I figured it he was safe enough in that category! Nevertheless, I take your point about roles. How would you prefer to proceed - by removing the subcat entirely, or by duplicating? I don't really have strong feeling either way. If you have a preference, let me know and i'll make adjustments accordingly. Rockpocket 09:21, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- My preference would be simply to have an Animal rights movement subcategory of Category:Animal rights. I didn't realize there was a sub-sub category of animal rights activists. My thinking is to put them all together as part of the animal rights movement, and not to distinguish further between activists, writers, philosophers, scientists. Is Gill Langley an activist, for example? I would say not, but she might strongly disagree. SlimVirgin (talk) 09:38, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- It might be nice to subcategorise individuals in the movement, from groups, concepts etc. This is how I interpreted the activists category, though thinking about it further I can see how we could run into problems. Simply having a cat entitled "people involved with the animal rights movement" might be a bit silly, though. Therefore, i'll support your proposal. Is the process to take it to WP:CfD, or is there another mechanism we could use to reorganise? Rockpocket
- I think it's okay just to remove people from the animal rights activist category and put them back into the animal rights movement category; then we can tag the former for deletion because empty. If someone objects, it'll have to go to CfD, but in the absence of objections, I think we can go ahead and do it, because it was created without consensus and unnecessarily. SlimVirgin (talk) 09:52, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, i'll transfer back the ones I replaced. Rockpocket 09:53, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I would like to request that user Ringbearer6782 [2] be blocked. He has received multiple warning for vandalizing pages, especially the Heysel Stadium disaster page. I reverted a resent vandalism by this user and warned him to stop. He then placed a flame message on my talk page. He also deleted my warning from his own talk page. I have given him npa4im. More Asher
I blocked the IP address for 48 hours that Asher was using earlier today to avoid the block. I reverted his edits using that IP except for the one he made to his talk page. As his adopter, do you think that that warrants an extension of the block on Asher or should it remain set to expire 03:54, January 2, 2007? Right now it's looking increasingly apparent that he's not willing to change behaviors, but, hopefully, you can help guide him in some way. Metros232 20:55, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Metros232. Thanks for your message. I certainly wouldn't protest extending his block for it. But I'm inclined to suggest that assume, in good faith, that he didn't realise that he shouldn't edit from an IP and give him one last chance. If after the numerous warnings and offers of help, he creates another sock to repeat his conflict-of-interest edits, or comes back from his block and slips back into his old habits then I can offer no argument against a indefinate block. I'm happy and willing to help him in anyway I can, but only if he will make the effort himself. As you say, its looking increasingly unlikely that he is willing to do so. Inclusionist and deletionist
I know you're not advocating taking sides, but I really wish you wouldn't support the use of those terms, even in quotation marks. The way StuRat et al. use them on the ref desk doesn't accurately reflect what they ordinarily mean on Wikipedia (m:Deletionism and m:Inclusionism). I also find being labelled a "deletionist" a bit demaining, in so far as it focuses on one of many methods I pursue in an effort to improve the quality of answers given on the reference desk. -- SCZenz 06:07, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
- I completely agree, labeling individuals as such is insulting in that it implies they have an ideological agenda in their actions, rather than a reason based judgement. Whenever I use the terms, always in quotes, its to highlight the pointlessness of using such partisan labels. Such entrenchment is the very basis of my frustration over the situation. I hoped that was clear. Nevertheless, I take your point that repeating such terms - even in criticism of their use - gives them a level of legitimacy. And am happy to refrain from using them again if you think it would help. Rockpocket 06:18, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
- I'd prefer if you didn't. When someone makes up a label for someone, which is neither an accurate description of nor endorsed by the labelled, it becomes a derogatory term. Taking insults with a smile is, to a certain point, part of my job here... but if I had my druthers I'd rather not hear that one from anyone. Your thoughtful consideration is greatly appreciated. :) -- SCZenz 07:35, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
