How do templates work?

[edit]

Let's say I want to make a template with two parameters (?). For an example, the template would be called {{FruitTaste}}. The template would say "Apples are {{{1}}}. And bananas are {{{2}}}." In using the template on a page, if I were to only fill in the first parameter (for example, I type in {{FruitTaste|delicious}}), how do I make it so the entire second sentence is blank and it comes out as "Apples are delicious." instead of "Apples are delicious. And bananas are {{{2}}}."? How can I make it so the second sentence only appears if the second parameter is filled? —RootSword (talk) 07:58, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Help:Template, particularly the section "Handling parameters". I'm not an expert on this, but I think the answer to your question is probably there: if not, place another "helpme". JohnCD (talk) 10:30, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was afraid someone would say that... Okay, I'll try reading it again. Thanks. —RootSword (talk) 12:04, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Lower down that page, under "System variables and conditional logic/Examples of extension parser functions", I think "#ifeq" might do the trick. If not, WP:Village pump (technical), shortcut WP:VPT, is where the gurus hang out who know this sort of stuff. JohnCD (talk) 16:50, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
