Copyright law and Wikipedia
[edit]Hello. I see that somebody left you a note in 2017 about copyright concerns, but perhaps they did not sufficiently explain the situation. You have added more text to the article Sammy Jo Prudhomme that is taken from an external source.
Wikipedia is governed by United States law, which means that we must respect copyright and remove material that may violate copyright from publication. We are required to block from access people who repeatedly paste such content on our site. Under US law, content is copyright protected as soon as it is written down. Unless the material does not qualify for copyright (most does), is too old to be protected, or is released under a license that allows us to use it, we can only use brief and clearly marked quotations from the material. Otherwise, it all has to be written down in our own unique language, utilizing the same paraphrasing skills required for academic institutions. Our concern is not merely with plagiarism, however (although that is concern). Our concern is with illegal infringement.
The material that you placed in this article in January includes substantial copying from two sources: https://osubeavers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3324 and https://usctrojans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2626. Both of these pages are published under explicit copyright reservation by the respective universities. ("© 2019 Oregon State Athletics. All Rights Reserved" and "© 2019 University of Southern California Athletics") We cannot use this text on Wikipedia, unless you are able to prove a license from the universities that allows us to do so.
Because the license legally has to be compatible with our own license, any license they grant would have to permit the material to be modified and commercially reused. We cannot accept licenses that restrict changes or redistribution, even for profit.
If you would like to ask these two universities to license the content they have claimed copyright over, please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials, which will explain the procedure.
If we do not receive such a license, this text - currently covered up on the article - will be removed in order to comply with the law. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:18, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

[edit]If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username. If you choose to do so, we ask the following:
- Please be willing and able to prove your identity to Wikipedia.
- Please send an email to info-enwikimedia.org. Be aware that the volunteer response team that handles email is indeed operated entirely by volunteers, and the reply may not be immediate.
If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).
A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.
You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
- Adding
{{unblock-un|your new username here}}
below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page. - At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
