Dear Sbrass:

You left me a message asking for more detail about what needs to be added to your submission about Mohamed Sahnoun. Each article in Wikipedia needs citations to sources that are independent. That means that they are written by someone other than the subject, his friends, relatives, employer, etc. Specifically, the references should be about him, not by him. Now, for Mr. Sahnoun, a diplomat, you can probably find newspaper articles or books about his activities. Here's an example:

http://books.google.ca/books?id=v8i8jwp1pvcC&pg=PA135&dq=%22Mohamed+Sahnoun%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=XaSHUZe2CpDeyQHo8YDgBw&ved=0CE8Q6AEwBg

This book talks about how he has a long history with the UN, so I have added a citation to it next to that part of your article. I found it by using Google and selecting the Books option. It's important that information in Wikipedia all be referenced by other published sources. Published material about this man should be easy to find, since he is a public figure. —Anne Delong (talk) 12:54, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Talking back to people[edit]

Dear Sbrass:

I received your message on my talk page. I am chairing a conference with 51 speakers and 600 registrants this weekend, so I may not answer again until Monday.

To contact a person on Wikipedia, leaving a message on his or talk page usually works well. Sometimes, though, you want to leave a message somewhere else, for example, on the talk page of a particular article or in a discussion going on somewhere. What you do then is put a "talkback" message on the person's talk page, and that will alert the person about where to look. You can see that I did this on your talk page. If you click the edit button, you can see what I typed to make the message appear. Just do the same thing, only with your user name instead of mine. I see that you received an invitation to the WP:Teahouse. There are really friendly and patient editors there, so it's a good place to ask questions. —Anne Delong (talk) 18:25, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm seriously discouraged and irritated by this time-consuming process. I've added a host of outside references, which your reviewer seems to ignore. And the subject, Mohamed Sahnoun, is undeniably worth an entry. It's as if I'm up against an un-named bias. The current draft can no doubt be improved, but I thought that the whole ethos of Wikipedia is allowing people like me to put up an entry, and then allow others to do the improving.Sbrass (talk) 16:38, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Sbrass. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Mohamed Sahnoun".

Contested deletion[edit]

This page should not be speedily deleted because... (your reason here) This short entry gives Wikipedia user access to a massive and growing on-line archive of material of interest to researchers and historians, but so far little-known. The article cites numerous references to existing Wikipedia entries.--Sbrass (talk) 16:26, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi! I wanted to answer some questions here. The main issue here was that the content was written up like a press release and had a few marketing buzz words. To be honest, your writing wasn't that bad - it's just very different than how Wikipedia tends to phrase things. It's kind of a steep learning curve sometimes. I highly recommend looking over WP:NPOV, as it gives a general overview of the neutral point of view guidelines.
As far as making sure that people are aware of this as a resource goes, you can bring it up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange and see if it can be added to the list of shared resources. You could also mention the resource at various applicable WikiProjects - just make sure that you are neutral in your approach and that you are also transparent about your involvement with the archive. For example:
Hi! I work with the archival project 'For A New World', which stores various types of media such as photo and video. The project is predominantly focused on the life and legacy of Frank Buchman and the Oxford Group movement, while also taking a look at groups, events, and people that touch upon the same principles and elements as Buchman. The project's scope can be read here, on the site's main page. People covered by the archive include Konrad Adenauer, Alice Wedega, and Cornelio Sommaruga, as well as groups and topics like Alcoholics Anonymous and Up with People.
The project is run by the Swedish not-for-profit foundation 'foranewworld'. The site does allow volunteers, but work is vetted before publication. (If you have a link specifically to the editorial/posting policy, it would be good to link to it.) If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask! I'm also new to Wikipedia, so any advice you may have on ensuring that people are aware of this resource would be much appreciated!
This gets some of what you had previously had written, but doesn't really have the marketing writeup. It's also transparent about any potential conflict of interest.
All of this said, I'm not sure how much could really be used on Wikipedia. Wikipedia tends to have a very conservative policy on copyright. Media cannot be uploaded unless it's either under a compatible creative commons license or if it falls very clearly and easily under fair use. The site is pretty strict about this. To give an example, I created an article on Keshia Thomas, the African-American woman who was photographed protecting a racist from an angry crowd. The photograph is iconic and was Life's photo of the year for 1996. You would think that the photo would fall under fair use, but it was argued that it didn't because it could more or less be described with words. It's just that strict. So just be careful about this when listing the site as a resource. ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 17:47, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll work on your suggestion, and try to put up a short piece on "Resource exchange" and "shared resources". I'm pretty much a beginner at this game, and I want to play by the rules. But I've now been blocked from editing existing pages... It's as if I've been marked down as a potential threat! The "For A New World" project that I'm involved in is, for example, scanning books (with the permission of the copyright holders) into word-searchable .pdf files. I'm now not able to simply turn existing references to books on Wikipedia pages into hot links to our platform where the full text is available... Sbrass (talk) 09:39, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
