Hi Scartol, I've only started reading the Emmy Noether article. However, I feel the prose needs to be refreshed. My main concern is that (from my first read) I didn't find the text flowing at all. Maybe the sentences and too long, or too chopped up or sometimes else. I see you have received a few "copyedit" barnstars, so maybe you could try fixing it a bit. I have exams at the moment but I'll try to point out more issues soon: this is a great article. Randomblue (talk) 11:10, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I think the fourth paragraph in the lead should be cut by half. I propose (very first draft):

Noether's mathematical work focuses mainly on algebra, and has been divided into three "epochs". In the first epoch (1908–1919), she made important contributions to invariant theory. Most notably, Noether's theorem has been called "one of the most important mathematical theorems ever proved in guiding the development of modern physics".[4] In the second epoch (1920–1926), Noether studied commutative rings, working out the theory of ideals in such rings. In her esteemed classical paper Idealtheorie in Ringbereichen (1921) she gave the first definition of a commutative ring and used ascending chain conditions to prove an analog of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. In the third epoch (1927–1935), she worked on noncommutative algebras, as well as uniting hypercomplex numbers and the representation theory of groups with the modules and ideals of rings. She is credited with formulating a theory of modules and ideals in rings that satisfy certain finiteness conditions. Noether was generous with her ideas, and is credited with several novel lines of research, even in disparate fields such as algebraic topology.

A reply on Peau de chagrin

Hi Scatrol, regarding your query about the language of the written piece, it is with no doubt Arabic. Also the translation is 90% accurate except in the last two lines. The phrase "So be it" better to replaced with "Amen". HaythamAbulela 18:36, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

specks of brain on my computer

I just listened to Bold I Be and my head exploded. Possibly the best thing I've ever seen, done or tasted. "Like three apostrophes." Oh man. --JayHenry (talk) 03:57, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Have to dash, but...

...will keep working. I threw up some notes on the ascending/descending chain conditions here, and I think I've finally gotten a handle on ideals beyond just their formal definitions. I'm starting to get it, even if I haven't had time to write everything up :) I'll try to do more learning tonight after work. Willow (talk) 22:19, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

I have been learning a lot, and writing up some of it. Could you look at the table of her students and the chain conditions blurb? But everything's quiet at the FAC, and we might be able to coast to that bronze star? Ordinarily I wouldn't take the lazy route, but I also don't want to rock the boat and cause stability concerns by adding a lot of new material and re-organizing things. What do you think? Copyedit

Hi Scartol. I was wondering if you had time to spare for a copyedit of VNQDD? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:45, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Request for a copyedit?

Hi there. I was wondering if you could copyedit 1965–1966 Central African Republic coup d’état? Wackymacs requested that the article be copyedit by a fresh set of eyes. Thanks, Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 13:15, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Oh sorry, I didn't see the image up top. If you don't have the time, that's fine. If you do, I'll appreciate whatever you can copyedit, whenever you're available (even a week from now). Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 16:22, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
You told me to contact you today about the copyedit. Are you available to look at the article or are you still busy? Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 02:14, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Alright, no worries. Real life always takes precedence over Wikipedia. Good luck with everything. Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 02:23, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Copyediting

Hi Scartol, we've met in the past and discussed issues of copyediting before. I have recently nominated Zhang Heng for FA status. I was wondering if you'd take a look and see if there is any sore thumbs sticking out that might need fixing or at least improvement. Thanks!--Pericles of AthensTalk 18:32, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi again! User:AndonicO says he's up to the challenge, but so far has not done anything. You are more than welcome to help out whenever you are not busy (come Monday, I presume). Cheers.--Pericles of AthensTalk 19:00, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Dude, who hasn't heard of Bill Hicks (RIP) or Mitch Hedberg (RIP again)? Unless of course your head has been dug into the sand for the past three decades or you've been living in a cave. Now, granted I didn't get into Hicks until after he was dead (I actually learned of him through the band Tool quoting him, about '96). I don't know why I didn't mention Hicks or Hedberg on my user page. I think they were far more talented than Jim Gaffigan, but Gaffigan's jokes are nonetheless my favorite.--Pericles of AthensTalk 19:13, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

FA-Team Mission 4

Mission 4, a series of articles on the Everglades, could do with help from the FA-Team! Thanks! Awadewit (talk) 13:07, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Image:Noether.jpg

Just a quick note about Image:Noether.jpg. This site uses the image with permission directly from a Professor Emiliana P. Noether. It looks like she retired some years ago from uconn.edu, but is still a little active (eg. here). I have no idea how copyright works, but is it possible for us to get the same permission? You've probably already come across it in your search for info, but thought I'd mention it just in case. Cheers, Ben (talk) 13:10, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm happy to chase it up (after exams next week) if you want. I wasn't sure if we could use the pic with that sort of permission on Wikipedia, or if you still wanted it (I was only reading the FAC page), so I thought I'd drop a note here first. Cheers, Ben (talk) 13:25, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Peer review for Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hi, I saw on the volunteer list that you're open to helping with peer reviews of some topics in 20th century American history. I've been working on sourcing this article in the hope of getting it to GA or FA level, but I know that it needs some other work as well. If you have a chance, could you please look it over and comment in its peer review? Thanks, GaryColemanFan (talk) 23:48, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Your red pen is requested

If you have time, I put Myst III: Exile up for peer review, and I was wondering if you could assist in copyediting (because I write in a lackadasical fashion :P) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 17:28, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Ok, thanks a lot :) Truth be told, I never actually finished the game (I got to the last Age before my computer crashed and I never got around to reinstalling :P) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 13:27, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Muchos gracias! I'll get t'fixing your comments righ'away! Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 15:12, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

MS is finally getting ready for FAC, but we could really use another peer review! Awadewit (talk) 03:07, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Request for peer review help

Hi. I've currently got the article Insane Clown Posse up for peer review, trying to improve the quality to FA quality. Your help would be greatly appreciated. (Ibaranoff24 (talk) 11:22, 15 June 2008 (UTC))

Hello again. There has been a substantial amount of changes to the article since I contacted you, and work on the article is still in progress. If you are not too busy, I am still interested in your help. (Ibaranoff24 (talk) 21:48, 20 June 2008 (UTC))

Help with copyedit

Hello Scartol,

from your beautiful writing in Emmy Noether, I know that you are somebody who cares about high-quality prose. May I ask you for the following: as the main contributor of group (mathematics) (and being a non-native speaker), I would like to ask for your help with a copyedit. The article is in preparation for a FAC. It has achieved Good Article status and has also been peer reviewed. Comments from the Peer Review have been covered, so the article should be content-wise pretty stable. I would particularly ask for your help with respect to "beautiful" wording, and good text flow. I'm aware of the fact that there are many word repetitions and similar issues. As a mathematics text, there are some stylistic pecularities, but I wish the text in the end reads very smoothly. Thanks very much for any help whatsoever! (I also posted to WP:LoCE). Jakob.scholbach (talk) 20:28, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey. I know you aren't taking any more copyediting requests right now, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to check behind someone else's copyedits to review the changes and make sure they are good ones? User:G.A.S is trying his hand at copyediting Tokyo Mew Mew, and User:Mizu onna sango15 agreed to follow behind to check them, as G.A.S. is new to it. However, Mizu hasn't been following behind after the first bit, and I'm a little concerned that G.A.S. needs some guidance and that some of his changes are not quite aiding the prose. His first bit of copyediting starts here, if you do have time to give a quick review to offer corrections/advice. Thanks either way. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 17:16, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey, just dropping a note to see if you've had time to check the article yet? -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 07:35, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
I replied on my talk page. I would appreciate your copy-editing the article. Regards, G.A.S 05:30, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the copy edit! We will address your comments as soon as possible—they are of utmost value. G.A.S 15:15, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Emmy

I see Emmy finally made it across the line! Congrats!! That was... grueling, wasn't it? I would have given up weeks earlier. Note to self: stay away from articles that involve technical mathematics. --JayHenry (talk) 20:02, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Congrats! I guess my help was not needed for the FA. There are some things and references I'd still like to add, but I can now do so leisurely. Apropos JH's remark above, modern math, especially abstract algebra, especially non-commutative rings, especially their classification theorems are notoriously difficult to explain to the lay person! (Actually, they are difficult to explain to mathematicians in other sub-fields.) I wish I had known about the FA review earlier, but, in any case, you're over the hump now. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 20:20, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. As I've said, all praise for the mathematics/science section goes to WillowW. – Scartol • Tok 21:03, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
That's not true; where would we've been without our mathematician friends like Ozob, User:R.e.b., David Eppstein, Jakob.scholbach and probably fifty others? In this story, we saved each other. :) I hope that we'll all keep working together to make Emmy and related articles in abstract algebra even more excellent. Maybe we'll make a wiki-project? :) Willow (talk) 05:22, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
It's almost like we need to start Wikipedia:WikiProject Emmy Noether just to finish this one article. :-) I've enjoyed learning and writing about Emmy, but I wouldn't have gotten anywhere and wouldn't even have attempted to without the support and encouragement of everyone else, especially Scartol and Willow. And Willow, you deserve more credit than you give yourself for the mathematical parts of the article. That stuff is hard, but almost all of it is yours or based on your work. You should be proud! Ozob (talk) 16:09, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Ditto from me. I saw how hard you guys worked on that article. Blood, sweat, and tears. I would congratulate WillowW on her talk page, but she hustles those notes off immediately to keep modest. That was an astounding piece of work on that article, both of you. Way to go. --Moni3 (talk) 16:27, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Whereas I wear the praise like an obnoxious hat, increasing the font size and keeping it where everyone can see it and add to it. =) What is this shame you speak of? Thanks, everybody. – Scartol • Tok 18:02, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Ha ha. Goodness. I don't think I've ever spoken so boldly in all my life. Go me. --Moni3 (talk) 18:04, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, Scartol!

"Wanna do that again?" — "Nevermore."

Just kidding. ;) It was fun, and it was a great chance for me to learn tons of new math! :) I'm still agog at how much math got done in the 19th century; I suppose since it took them a century to do it, I shouldn't be vexed for not being able to learn it all in a few weeks. ;) I'll keep adding bits and pieces to Emmy's article over time, since I do think we left off some minor points, such as her admiration for the works of Richard Dedekind and more about central simple algebras. I think there might also be a connection between her work and the solution of Fermat's last theorem by Andrew Wiles?

I've been having a fun time the past few days; my oldest niece came for a visit! I've been trying to teach her to knit for almost as long as I've been at Wikipedia, but she's still too young, it seems. :( But I succeeded in teaching her how to use a sewing machine; she made (with a little help from me) a brilliant orange polka-dotted purse with blue trim, hot pink straps, and a big Kermit-green patch-pocket. It was glorious and she thought so, too. :)

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you, Scartol, for bringing Emmy the notice she deserves so richly, and for leading us all so well. :) Oh, and for being my best and truest friend. Willow (talk) 19:56, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Ooh yes there is a connection. I happen to know this as the only reason I'd ever heard of Galois groups was because I read the book Fermat's Enigma by Simon Singh a number of years ago. It's very readable, very interesting, not too technical and not too long as I recall. So if you're not too burned out having numbers in the back of your head... it really is one of the most fun stories about math that I've ever read. --JayHenry (talk) 01:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

I've placed it under peer review here, but was unable to find its category. So I'm now consulting the guy with a big red pen! (peer review volunteers list) :P Anyways, could you leave a peer review for it? Anything is appreciated. Thanks. --haha169 (talk) 00:42, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

It's all right. Do your best on whatever you're doing first, but if you ever have any time... Anything is appreciated. Good luck! --haha169 (talk) 15:54, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

FA-Team Mission 4 in the real world

The Everglades have been saved! Just kidding! Seriously, though, big changes are afoot, as reported by our own Moni3 at Wikinews. These developments have prompted a dramatic increase in traffic to the articles, so let's do Wikipedia proud and spruce them up pronto! Awadewit (talk) 15:41, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Call your attention to something

If it is possible, I would like your opinion located here. It is about developing school & town-related CD-ROMs to send to schools to give students a better idea of what they should know. I heard your an educator, so it would be a big help if you could opinionize on what schools want and if this is a real idea to endevour.Mitch32(UP) 18:52, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Well, the finished product would be CD-ROMs grouping of about 12-20 articles detailing the area they live in sent to schools in the area. These would go to good use seeing that they can teach students into the history about where they lived - and if they had an ancestry here - learn what they went through.Mitch32(UP) 20:49, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Template limits at FAC

See Wikipedia talk:Featured article candidates#Template limit again; I had to alter your FAC in archives since it was one with many caps. (Cool crown!) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:00, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

template coding help

Hey Scartol,

I picked your name at random off of the coders page (no offence, but I didn't see a better way...).  :-) a question, if you can help. I made a template for another user - {{pictify}} - and it all works well except for one sticky problem. I wanted the wikipedia link to automatically search for pictures listed in the 'type' parameter, but I can't seem to get the template to turn off searches in article mainspace, so it tends to go straight to any article about the picture subject, rather than the search of pictures that I want. can you figure out what's going wrong?

thanks --Ludwigs2 22:35, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

whoops! never mind; figured it out.  :-) --Ludwigs2 23:23, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
