Inclusion of alumni

Hi, Thanks a lot for your support and guidance. I would like to know if I can add in a new topic "alumni" mentioning list of few alumnis of our school who've been working with some esteemed organisations in India as professionals and doctors?? Credit goes to our school for having given them the base to where they stand now. Kindly advise. Thanks.

Hinashahed (talk) 19:27, 1 September 2009 (UTC)Hina

A small list of alumni is ok, but such lists can easily get out of hand. The people should be notable in their own right (that is, they have received significant coverage in reliable sources), and there should be documentation that these people are indeed alumni of the school. Our official guideline is at Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Lists of people. Shubinator (talk) 23:53, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

I hope I started a trend

It looks like the supports are rolling in! rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:14, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Yup, all the cool kids are doing it ;) Shubinator (talk) 00:59, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Bot note

Hey, I thought you should know that the bot is not doing a very good job of removing all of the subst'ed DYK template. Renata (talk) 05:33, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I found the root of the problem and I'm working on getting it fixed. Thanks for the notice. Shubinator (talk) 05:37, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
I've started the bot on a cleanup run of its own edits (~250). Let me know if you still see issues in a few hours. Shubinator (talk) 06:16, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
There, everything should be fixed now. Sorry about that. Shubinator (talk) 07:39, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick follow up! :) Renata (talk) 12:58, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Happy Labor Day!

Dear colleague, I just want to wish you a happy, hopefully, extended holiday weekend and nice end to summer! Your friend, --A NobodyMy talk 05:54, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

I've made a good-faith effort to resolve the POV issues at this DYK nominee article. What do you think? Bearian (talk) 17:05, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

The editor who raised the issue says it's good for DYK, so I've given it a(nother) tick. Shubinator (talk) 03:08, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

DYKcheck feature request

Could you modify DYKcheck to also report the prose size in characters, in addition to (or instead of) bytes and words? The rules, Wikipedia:Did_you_know#Selection_criteria, currently specify the required size in terms of characters. Thanks for the great tool!  Sandstein  09:10, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

I believe it does report characters; perhaps all that is needed is to change the report to read "x characters" instead of "x B", which might be confusing. For example, when I put in my sandbox, DYKcheck correctly reports 1 character of text, instead of 7 bytes of wikitext. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 11:20, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Rjanag's right, the count is in characters. I've tweaked the output of the script from "B" to "characters" to clear it up. Shubinator (talk) 01:44, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks!  Sandstein  08:59, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Problem with DYKcheck

Could you help me sort out the problem I've described at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Additional rules#A2? It doesn't appear to be an error in DYKcheck as it's working correctly for other people, but I don't see what's causing the problem. Thanks, cmadler (talk) 20:28, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Interesting. I've replied there. Shubinator (talk) 02:58, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Plagiarism

Hi Shub, thanks for the tip off. I havent' looked at Billy's article but I will take your opinion. However I do have an issue. If we have an article on the queue for sevem days or so and it has been looked and discussed by a number of editors and they have identified issues. Then surely if I can correct those issues then I can take the risk of promoting the hook. You appear to be suggesting that I should perform all the DYK checks myself. Surely that is the purpose of the DYK queue? I obviously want to assist (and improve) the process at DYK but as you know moving hooks is a time consuming process and I have to AGF that the DYK process is working. Apart from that. Yes. lets hope we get no plagiarised artickes.... and that they are spotted in good time. Victuallers (talk) 07:59, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

How do you make a navigation bar at the top, like you have yours. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dwayneflanders (talkcontribs) 03:01, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

I looked at some of the menus at Wikipedia:User page design center/Menus and subpages, picked a design I liked, and changed the links and colors to fit me. I also put mine on a subpage and transcluded it here so I can easily put it on multiple pages. Shubinator (talk) 03:06, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

DYK bot

Hi, I thought I'd let you know the bot performs unnecessary actions, like this one and this one, where he adds a date that is already there. Hekerui (talk) 09:34, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, it's a bug in the dykdate detection. It's fixed for future bot runs, and I'll see if I can manually go back and fix the pages where it made an error. Thanks for the notice. Shubinator (talk) 15:39, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

RE: School Articles

Thank You for letting me know that, i will try to work on some of the school articles ive created.

Cheers, -- Dwayneflanders' Talk 23:01, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Please dont rush me, i am trying my best to gather information about this school. -- Dwayneflanders' Talk 00:06, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

DYK refs

I saw your concern on the nom[1] and the issue has been fixed. There were a couple paragraphs that used a single ref so I multiplied the refs to where they were needed. This could have been dealt with easily in the early days of the nom but I understand that there's a huge backlog on DYKs. I hope this won't affect the nom as it would be unfair to me and my co-author. Warm regards, JaakobouChalk Talk 12:57, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Looks good; I've verified it. Nominators are given at least a day, and often 3 or 4, to fix issues even if the nom's at the bottom. Thank you for fixing the issues quickly. Shubinator (talk) 02:04, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Notification

Hi Shubinator. I'm posting to let you know that your name has been mentioned on a list of potential candidates for adminship on the talk page for RfA's here. If you are interested in running, or if you would like to make any comments, feel free to join the discussion. decltype (talk) 20:10, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Left a note there. Shubinator (talk) 02:04, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Bot programming

Hey Shubinator, I recently did some template reorganizing and realized that I'm going to need to do several thousand simple edits like this. So I'm thinking of trying to write a bot to do it, since it's mindless and is far too much work to do with AWB. Since you've written bots recently, I was wondering if you have any suggestions about where I could find good instructions on how to get started. I would probably be writing it in Python or using Pywikipedia (I know some Perl, but not as much, and Perl generally puts me in a grumpy mood).

Thanks, rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 05:05, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Creating a bot is a good starting point. It lists most of the available bot libraries in the different languages. For python, m:Using the python wikipediabot is the place to go. I didn't use python, so I'm afraid I can't help much with the details. As with any programming project, it takes some goofing around to figure out how things work. Shubinator (talk) 06:44, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

DYK refs

Hi, I'm a little puzzled by your complaint about the ref. My response is here. Thanks. Malick78 (talk) 14:26, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Replied there. Shubinator (talk) 05:03, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

RfA

I would like to nominate you to become an administrator. I know you have said that you wish to wait for a while before going through RfA, but I just want to let you know that an offer of nomination is on the table, which you are feel to accept, decline, or push off to a later date. Regards, NW (Talk) 23:22, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

I am honored by the offer, but I have two nominators for when the time comes. I'll keep you in mind in case something unexpected happens. Thank you! Shubinator (talk) 04:56, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

DYKcheck error

Hi Shubinator, I noticed a DYKcheck error on this nomination. It seems to be formatted correctly, but the link at the start is throwing DYKcheck off (it says 'Error: Hook is not formatted correctly'). I tried adding 'that' to the start, and it worked fine. Thanks, LittleMountain5 01:02, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes, "that" has to be at the start of a hook for DYKcheck to work. It detects hooks by the string "... that" and will not find a hook if it doesn't find the string. I intentionally did not program it to find hooks by "... " since there are often ellipses that aren't part of hooks on the noms page. Almost all DYK hooks start with "... that", so it's rarely a problem; you can always run the script on the article itself though. Shubinator (talk) 01:32, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
Fine with me, thanks for the quick reply. LittleMountain5 02:31, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

BRFA

Hey Shubinator, I've filed a request for bot approval at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/ZhBot. If you have a moment, I'd appreciate your input. Thanks! rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 17:20, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Cool; overall it looks good. I've left some comments there. Shubinator (talk) 04:54, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

DYK quick fix

Could you delete the extra "the" in the Einar Sissener hook (the 4th) on T:DYK? From WP:ERRORS. Shubinator (talk) 05:48, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Already one, I see :)  Roger Davies talk 05:52, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
