Welcome!

[edit]
Hello, Smac02155, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like working here and want to continue. If you need help on how to name new articles, look at the Guide to Layout, and for help on formatting the pages visit the Manual of Style. If you need general help, look at Help and the FAQ, and if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions). There's still more help at the Tutorial and the Policy Library. Also, don't forget to visit the Community Portal — and if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my New-Users' Talk Page.

Additional tips:
Here are some extra tips to help you get around Wikipedia:
  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills, try the Sandbox.
  • Click on the Edit button on a page, and look at how other editors did what they did.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Always sign comments on Talk pages, never sign Articles.
  • You might want to add yourself to the New User Log
  • If your first language isn't English, try Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language
  • Full details on Wikipedia style can be found in the Manual of Style.
There's also a regular group introduction to Wikipedia for new users on IRC.

Happy editing!

Thanks for your message. I wasn't sure what "he makes a point of recognizing his former students" meant; looking at his Web page I now see what you were getting at. Is that unusual in your field? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:14, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't sorted out who left the various messages (was it all from you? remmeber to "sign" your comments, as explained above), but the indexing problem wasn't — it was a result of creating the article with the U.S. full stop after "Jr", and then searching for the article wothout it. I've now created a redirect to deal with that.
I've reverted some of your edits, I'm afraid, which reverted to non-Wikipedia style. There were also a lot of external links to sections of the same site, which is deprecated here; one link to the index page is usually enough. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:32, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SWIM

[edit]

I read through the article on the Southeast Unitarian Universalist Etc, and - although it's a very nice article - it started to sound too much like a brochure. Accordingly, I (to use my own phrase) "trimmed massive amounts of puffery". Keep this in mind for your next article (and I do hope there will be a "next article" from you). Good luck. DS 15:17, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ah, okay. I see that you've replaced the fact that the nature trips exist, but not the lengthy advertising-like descriptions of the nature trips. That'll do. DS 13:45, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How to list an article for deletion

[edit]

Page-deletion privileges are limited to administrators; otherwise there would be chaos (think about what vandals could do with page-deletion privileges).

If you make a silly test page, and then want it deleted, you add the following to it: {{db-test}}. This will add it to the list of pages to be deleted; the admins read this list constantly.

Thanks for asking.DS 12:46, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • ...actually, I just re-read your request; it seems you're asking about doing a page-move instead. Page-move privileges are restricted during your first month or so as a registered user (again, because of vandals abusing them), so I'll do it for you. DS 12:52, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • ...okay, the lesson is, don't leave messages on talk pages before you've had breakfast. The article Anne Hutchinson already exists. Here's what I suggest.
First, compare the two articles, and if there's any information in the yours that isn't in the correctly-spelled version, add it. Then, instead of listing yours for deletion, replace the content of the article with the following: #redirect [[Anne Hutchinson]]. DS 12:56, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How it works

[edit]

Deletion is not automatic; however, we have hundreds of admins, of whom dozens are probably reading the Speedy Deletions page at any time. I'd be surprised if it's still there within an hour. To be honest, though, I would have just made it into a redirect, since it's a not-unlikely misspelling. DS 16:29, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MaitlandJonesJr.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Hetar 04:51, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't replace the image in articles until a source and copyright license have been provided. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 13:28, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You need to place the relevant information on the image page, with evidence for permission to use (an e-mail address for him (altered to guard against spambots) would be useful). Then the image can be replaced in the article. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:26, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that {{pd-self}} would be right (unless you're the photographer, but from what you've said you're not). Wikipedia:Image copyright tags gives a list of tags, but which one is correct depends on who took the photo (the e-mail that you quote gives permission to use anything that he took, but he obviously didn't take this one...).

When you've worked out which tag to use, place it on the image page in place of the current template, and give a link to the Web page where you found it, together with an explanation that the subject gave permission for its use under Wikipedia conditions (remember that Wikipedia material can be used by other people in many different ways, including commercially). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:06, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd go for {{Fair use in}}. The copyright-owner is the photographer (not the subject), and I think it's therefore safer to go with this template (unless you can contact the photographer and get permission in line with one of the other templates). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:20, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:MaitlandJonesJr.jpg

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:MaitlandJonesJr.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 05:31, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:SWIMflyer1.jpg

[edit]
File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:SWIMflyer1.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MBisanz talk 22:25, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Hug-jiffy.jpg missing description details

[edit]
Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:Hug-jiffy.jpg is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:39, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Hug-jiffy.jpg

[edit]
File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Hug-jiffy.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:01, 23 September 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Salavat (talk) 06:01, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:SWIMflag.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
