Springbank

Springbank is an area in the western part of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. It is home to the All Saints' Academy and Springbank Primary Academy. Springbank is generally considered a part of Hesters Way geographically. It is bordered by Hesters Way, Fiddlers green and the Kingsditch Trading Estate. Its main feature is the large Springfields Park which name is closely related with the name Springbank.

History

An extract from the History of Hesters Way by Chris Green states "I had assumed that the name used these days for the suburban area here, Springbank, derives from the building which is still standing behind Springbank Primary Academy. It is more likely on reflection that it would be this other building, Springbank Cottage, that was the origin of the suburb's present name."^[1]

Regeneration

Hesters Way (which includes Springbank) has been the focus of regeneration over the last decade with a newly built community resource center (Spingbank Community Resource center).

In addition several new private housing developments are currently in progress, the largest of these being on the site vacated by GCHQ, when it moved to its new site, also located in Hesters Way.

Culture

Springbank along with Hesters Way, and some of St Peter’s and St Marks have been considered "Chavy" by local residence. The term "Chav" is rumored to be short for Cheltenham Average or Council Housed and Violent. The areas listed have high populations of working class people and council houses. Which is generally followed with high crime rates.

Hello. Did you really take this photo of Antony Johnson yourself 26 years ago? Or did you copy it from a documentary or a book or something?
