Welcome to Wikipedia. We welcome and appreciate your contributions, including your edits to Unexpected hanging paradox, but we cannot accept original research. Original research also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. Thank you. Dr. Whooves (talk) 22:36, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unexpected hanging paradox -- Khan's Solution

[edit]

Hi, I've just checked Wikipedia:User pages for guidance, and it says

"Wikipedia policies concerning the content of pages can and generally do apply to user pages, and users must observe these policies."

Therefore, it is not OK to put copyright material on a user page; perhaps the rules are more relaxed on user talk pages, but probably not a good idea to find out right now, so I've deleted the material. Since it is available on pkhope.com that shouldn't be too much of a hardship. regards Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:25, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A personal view

[edit]

Hi TheFightmaster, as an ordinary Wikipedian, I'm sorry about what's happened, as you've made a bold attempt but been roundly smacked for trying. It seems to me that Nasser Khan's solution can be seen and more importantly cited in Wikipedia references at PKhope.com: Khan's Solution. It also seems to me that you are very willing to acknowledge the source since you mentioned Khan's ownership of the text. Wikipedia is obviously bound by copyright law as well as its own guidelines, which basically just say that everything should come from reliable sources, and those sources should be named. When material is copyrighted, you may use it in only two ways: a) by quoting small parts of it under the fair usage rules, naming and fully citing the source, and making it plain it's being quoted; or b) by thoroughly paraphrasing it into your own words so that it has definitely been changed, under the logic that you can't copyright an idea, only the way it is expressed.

What to do now: hmmm. It would probably be best to leave the paradox for now - you could possibly try explaining Khan's solution but I feel you'd probably do best to practice on some other area first while you familiarize yourself with the distinctly Wikipedian way of writing, which really isn't like anything anywhere else - especially not things like blogs and Facebook, for example. Then when you're confident about your skill in creating references, structuring articles and so on, you could revisit Khan and explain in your own words what he was suggesting, which I think everyone agrees is an ingenious approach.

With my best wishes - Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:20, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
