study for prelims

[edit]

Hi,

I guess I need to take a wikibreak 'til mid-August to study for PhD prelims. Sorry for the interruption. I'll be dropping in a little — esp. on Sunday evenings — but can't dedicate too much time to Wikipedia 'til then. later, Ling.Nut 13:44, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article needs a severe overhaul

[edit]

Hi, dk. I was cleaning (attempting to, anyway) the Wei Yan article, noticing that it had a few errors, redundant links, irrelevant information and such. However, I've noticed that fact and fiction appears to be muddled together in a very inconsistant fashion and that it doesn't have one of the trademark infoboxes you seem to love setting up on these articles, leaving me to wonder if you're aware of it at all. I've done some spelling checks, fixed a few links and dealt with modern references, but that's all.

I know you like to focus on Chinese historical figures, so I just thought I'd give you a heads up on this train wreck, see if you'd like a challenge. Cheers. Gamer Junkie 04:40, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's a Chernobyl of an article, though I was secretly hoping someone else would clean it up, I guess I'll do something about it when I have spare time. _dk 05:17, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I only ask because you seem to be the only consistent editor in this area. Plastictv helps out often enough, but he's already told me that Wikipedia has left him pretty fed up. I can't see him wanting to deal with something of this magnitude so... you've been volunteered! Gamer Junkie 05:49, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, don't worry, he came back recently....so maybe he isn't so fed up any more? Anyhow, I have summer school and all that, but I'll put Wei Yan on my to-do list or something. _dk 05:55, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
He's back? Maybe I should ask him then, eh? I'm sure he'll love that, heh heh. Gamer Junkie 06:02, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(undent) Ye Gods, this is much worse than I thought! No mere mortal could clean this singlehandedly! Where is Zhuge Liang when we need him? ;-) Ling.Nut 22:11, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A rewrite might be easier, I think. _dk 00:38, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

oops sorry about the error on the subsection title... one thing we really need desperately is a standardization of these... thanks! Ling.Nut 00:19, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that standardisation titles should be all relevant factual information followed by (example) Cao Cao in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, followed by modern references or Cao Cao in popular culture. What do you guys think? Gamer Junkie 14:42, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The "Cao Cao" in subheadings is quite redundant, but the format is fine. _dk 18:23, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Yeah man, feel free to merge all that stuff from Ma Jun's article into the South Pointing Chariot article instead. I kind of went off on a tangent there with Ma's article. Lol.--PericlesofAthens 02:40, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

red cliffs aftermath

[edit]

I deleted a handful of sentences; see the last section of Talk. I'm really really really really supposed to be studying; this section could use some help from an old hand like yourself! Later, Ling.Nut 11:37, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hah, old hand...that's an honour. I'm not really in the mood for editing lately...but frankly, I think you really should stop worrying about Wikipedia and focus on what really matters. Good luck on your studies. _dk 06:13, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:AC5Falken.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:AC5Falken.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 04:33, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:AC5Falken.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:AC5Falken.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 04:33, 25 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 04:33, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

no need to revert

[edit]

The template has a Rank parameter. I wasn't sure whether to set it to General or Emperor, since his Emperor-ness was posthumous. I'm gonna re-revert and set Rank to "G". Ling.Nut 23:22, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

new template

[edit]

Changes made as per your request. See Guan Yu for an extreme example. Ranks can be highest achieved; there can even be an option to put two values for "Empire" in the case of individuals who served for a prolonged period under more than one... Thanks! Ling.Nut 00:47, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ranks in infobox; other thoughts

[edit]
  • Aside from the Rank parameter, what other major problems do you have with the infobox? Can we move forward on using it?
  • I added some more ranks to the infobox (including "Warlord" for people like Yuan Shao), based largely on cats which I believe Nlu created...
  • BTW we can make two parameters available for "Served" if needed, for examples like Mi Fang.
  • Another thing about Ranks and Served... we can make the template automatically add articles to the relevant cats based on Rank, or even on the intersection of Rank and Served (e.g., "Served=Cao Wei" + "Rank=General" could add articles to Category:Cao Wei generals etc.). That would be a pain to do... but it could be done.
  • I appreciate your input... Cheers! Ling.Nut 21:07, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I fear two parameters for "served" is not enough, Mi Fang has three since he first served Tao Qian, and there are many many instances like his. _dk 01:29, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK. The point is simply that modifications/extensions are not difficult to do, esp. since we have all code in a single location (read: it's a template, not a table). Ling.Nut 02:06, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please leave this article alone. There is no need to have a separate article on this small dead child: this will only cause misery to her family in the future. We already have an article on her killer, and that is more than enough for anybody. You have engaged in an edit-war with two administrators already (myself and Ryulong): how many more do you need to tell you that you have overstepped the mark and need to stop? —Phil | Talk 09:46, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Admins are also editors, the fact that you two are admins doesn't mean you can sidestep discussion (and using harsh language on my talk page no less). However, since I have no real ties with the article, I may just leave it alone as you said. _dk 11:29, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See my comment on the page's Talk about your suggestion of a "Modern references" section... I think it's a good idea but would wanna write it in userpsace to avoid hosing up the article...then add it fully-formed... what do you think? --Ling.Nut 17:48, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That would be wise. =) _dk 20:49, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
After giving it more thought, I think we could merge this proposed section with "Fictionalized account", making a "Cultural references" section of sorts, so we can write about the literary developments before and after the novel. _dk 21:49, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(undent)Well we haven't really discussed as a wikiproject whether we want everything under a "Cultural references" section, or whether we want two sections, one for ROTK (and possibly plays etc. from centuries ago) and one for everything more modern... I dunno how much of TK and ROTK is duplicated/mimicked/caricatured in games etc. Ling.Nut 00:11, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If we want to explain the ROTK version in detail then ROTK should have its own section, but if we're just going to gloss over it (like it is now), I think it's okay to put that in a subsection of "Cultural references". Though if we're writing a "Modern references", we must exercise caution in regards to WP:TRIVIA...._dk 08:18, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(undent) Oops I got distracted & forgot to re-add Man Chong etc. ... Yeah that scheme works until we get a project-wide one (if we ever do)... still think we need to copy the existing section in userspace and polish it up there, though... Ling.Nut 13:48, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
