Contested deletion
[edit]This page is not unambiguously promotional, because... As the President of Splashgear, I would like to post company information about the history of Splashgear and its pioneering efforts to introduce full-coverage, or full-body, swimwear to the general public--sometimes erroneously referred to as "Islamic swimwear". Splashgear is a leader in this market and has played an important role in this new niche industry and has garnered national and international media attention. I am curious to know why the Splashgear user page has been deleted, as well as a previous attempted Wikipedia page, but Splashgear's competitors have not been deleted, namely Burkini and Veilkini. Why is Wikipedia discriminating against one company, claiming that it is posting 'blatant promotion', while other similar companies are allowed to keep their company pages up? There are plenty of other examples of corporations having company pages on Wikipedia including Nike Inc., Adidas, Reebok, Speedo, TYR Sport Inc., Hurley International, Billabong (clothing), etc, etc, etc. Please respond and justify Wikipedia's decision to delete any attempt by Splashgear to post its own history or have its own company page before further action is taken. --Splashgear (talk) 19:07, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
- So, a couple of things happened here. First, you created an account under the name of a company, which means you are here to write only about your company, rather than to improve the encyclopedia. Second, you have a conflict of interest, which means you should be creating an article about your company here, not directly, and certainly not on a userpage, which is not an article (the combination of your username and what you wrote is what is considered "blatant promotion"). Third, that other articles about other companies exist is not taken into consideration. It's also important to remember that Wikipedia is not a directory and subjects must meet certain notability guidelines for inclusion. Perhaps this is a result of us not telling you all this before you got started, but nonetheless you agreed to the terms of service when you signed up, so it is what it is. You can use the instructions below to request to be unblocked and your account renamed if you wish, or just wait until someone unconnected to your company creates an article about it. - ok, thank you for the explanation and clarification, i do sincerely appreciate it. actually, two weeks ago, someone who is unaffiliated with splashgear did indeed create a page for the company, but her page was deleted. when i learned of this, that is when i decided to try and create a page myself. now i understand why my userpage and account were considered offensive, but it's still a mystery to me why the attempt of another person who is unaffiliated with the company was also deleted. i really did think that there was some discriminatory practice going on, as my company's competitors' pages are posted, hence my being upset. at this point, what do you recommend that i do? should i bother to request an unblock, wait until someone else comes along to create a splashgear page, OR request that a page be created on Splashgear (as i saw that option was available)? i look forward to your response. - The article was deleted because the person who created it basically pasted your website into it, which Wikipedia considers a copyright violation. Such pages are deleted on sight, and it had nothing to do with the eligibility of your company to have an article here. As to what you should do, again, that your competitors have articles in Wikipedia is immaterial. If you feel your company meets the notability requirements I linked to above, then you can request an unblock and rename, and then create a draft for review. Keep in mind that a company is notable not because it says it is notable, but because it has received significant coverage by sources independent of it. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 20:17, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
- i had no idea that's what she did, i never saw the page, but only heard about it. first of all, thank you for your time and efforts, i do appreciate you explaining this to me. second of all, yes, splashgear does indeed have MANY independent sources, including traditional major print, television (public television), and radio news coverage that has been both national and international--in english and other languages. i actually have an archive of most of that media coverage. so, i think i do have the notability aspect covered, since it is a historical fact that splashgear was a pioneer in this field. i think the problem here is mainly one of neutrality and making sure to not come across as perceived spam. what does wikipedia think about hiring professional wikiwriters to create such a company page? is that frowned upon or accepted, since it is a 3rd party service that does its own research? i'm just worried that i will attempt to create a page under a different username, but have it be deleted once again, so, am thinking of leaving it to some professionals. i look forward to your input on this. And no, also please don't create another account. That will be seen as a block evasion and only make things worse. It is difficult to write neutrally if you are closely associated with the subject, which is one of the reasons we prefer that doesn't happen. But it's not impossible. If you create a draft you'll have as much time as you need to submit it for review without fear of it being deleted (unless it's so blatantly promotional that it would be considered unsalvageable). - Why can't I edit Wikipedia?
Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. - Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?
Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right.
