Apologies concerning the issue about the Dragonriders of Pern book cover images

[edit]

I would like to express my sincere apologies about my changes of the books covers of the Dragonriders of Pern series. The reason why I have done such changes is because I would like to update the articles by using their latest book cover. I must admit I ignored the comment preferring the 1st edition, simply because I felt as if it is very outdated. I am sorry if my actions are similar to advertising, for it is unintentional. I thought simply stating the publisher or owner will be enough to use the book covers.

Thank you for informing me as soon as possible for I planned to update the whole series. I would also admit that I didn't read the rules about uploading such files and I have no clue if what I am doing is correct. I would see to it that I will be more careful in editing articles next time. Please feel free to examine my other edits if it is aligned with the standard regulations. Also feel free to delete all of my uploaded covers since I don't have the permission to delete such files. ---[XVS]- (talk) 10:21, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and thanks for your response. It is not unknown for a new, enthusiastic editor to trip over some of Wikipedia's rules: there are far too many to take in all at once. The images have been tagged and will be removed in due course, so we can regard this as "resolved" now.
I did in fact have a look at your other edits, and found nothing of concern.
My suggestion about systematic edits is: if you intend a series of changes involving many articles, post on a relevant talk page first, or after one changed article which can be an example, and wait a few days for responses. Then do a few and wait a while longer for any reaction. This is not "asking for permission" so much as making sure that your work takes account of any concerns of other editors from the outset and is not wasted. For a long series of edits I turn the talk page entry into a running progress report.
Your edits did in fact highlight a few problems with the articles:
  • coverage of The Coelura (and some other stories) could be improved, but since that is a non-Pern story it does not sit very happily in the same article as Nerilka's Story
  • some articles do lack images. I have a few first- or early-edition hardbacks which I will check through

Happy editing. --Mirokado (talk) 18:06, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dragonriders of Pern book cover images

[edit]

There are several problems with your updates to the book cover images on these articles:

  • You are replacing earlier images by those of a later edition. Generally speaking the earliest available image is preferred. In one case you have even removed a comment saying "1st edition preferred".
  • You are replacing the images by one particlular, a current, edition of these books, which is at the very least indistinguishable from a publisher's attempt to spam Wikipedia articles with advertising. The assertion "This is the official cover of Dragonflight written by Anne McCaffrey. It is republished by Transworld on the year 2012. The given material is solely owned by them" and the inclusion of the Transworld link under each image makes if fairly clear that this is in fact a commercial exercise. This is not allowed.
  • The resolutions of 600x1000 pixels are too high to pass as "fair use". See the sizes of the images you have replaced.

For the above reasons, please stop these updates immediately. I will consider what to do about the updates so far. I will follow this note by a standard one which includes links that you may find helpful. --Mirokado (talk) 19:58, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have now reverted the article and file updates. I have requested help removing the commercial images. Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spam#Newly created or updated files are spam. --Mirokado (talk) 22:06, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Dragonsong2012Ed.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not.
