Vazir Orujov (Azerbaijani: Vəzir Surxay oğlu Orucov) - National Hero of Azerbaijan; the participant of Nagorno-Karabakh War.

Life

Vazir Orujov was born on December 26, 1956 in Xoruzlu village, Tartar region. He received his secondary education in Xoruzlu village High School, was admitted to Baku Light Industry Technical School in 1974.[1] He was called for military service in 1975, demobilized from army in 1977 and continued his uncompleted secondary specialized education. In 1984 Orujov moved to Belkovo city of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia.[2]

Karabakh war and participation in battles

In 1992, he being aware of Khojaly Massacre, coming back to Azerbaijan joined to Tartar self-defense battalion on May 4. Though Orujov started to fight as a private soldier, he within a very short period of time, promoted up to the position of Deputy Battalion Commander for his command skills. He left his home saying that he leaves for Tartar city. By taking a gun of wounded police officer he met in his way towards to Shikharkh, joined to the battle for Aghdara informing no one in this concern.

Alexander Nevzorov worked as a war correspondent in Nagorno-Karabakh War.

Alexander Nevzorov, a Russian journalist and publicist while sharing with his memories about Karabakh conflict on December 28, 2015 said the followings about Vazir Orujov:

Do not be offended, but the most courageous man I have ever known was Azerbaijani. His name was Vazir. He did not distinguish from others with any feature. He wore very dirt pea-jacket with scent of fish.[3]

Vazir Orujov demonstrated courage in battles for Həsənqaya, Göyarx, Madagiz, Sarsang Reservoir, Childiran, Vagauz villages, destroyed a lot of plans of the enemy. As to Nevrozov, during Karabakh war, Armenian armed men attacked to the territory where Sarsang water reservoir was located and killed hundreds of people, destroyed Goranboy battalion.

The main forces tried to remove the people from the front line. The people quarreled for getting on a bus. At such a moment, I suddenly saw a man. He got on UAZ vehicle. He was indenting to drive the vehicle not towards home front, but towards the territory where there was a skirmish. There was a real hell and people were killed and 500 dead bodies were collected one on another. The whole territory to where Armenians attacked, was burning and blowing up.[3]

Orujov went there together with Nevzorov in order to provide aid to the wounded people. Pskov landing forces hired by the Armenians tried to take them away from UAZ vehicle and to shoot them. However, as one of the members of Pskov landing forces was familiar with Nevzorov, they came to an agreement and informed the others that just one Azerbaijani would pass from here and he was not allowed to be shot. Nevzorov remembers what happened as follows:

But Vazirov did not run away. He tried to find out his gun in his fired vehicle. And then shaking hand with me he went away. He stepped in such a manner that no any hero of Shakespeare could step in such a way. He stepping slowly proved that he would never run away from the enemy. He even did not speed up his steps when he heard the voice of shooting. Shot was made to the sky and it seemed like solute.[3]

On August, 1992 Orujov was on a reconnaissance mission in Sarsang Reservoir. He was accompanied with 30 scouts armed with PK machine guns. The group of Sardar Hamidov attacked from front, and the group of scouts of Orujov attacked from the back. Arabo battalion suffered a great loss in that day.

On September 1, 1992 in a battle for Childiran village while intending to shoot the tank of enemy, he was hardly wounded. On March 22, 1993 in hard battles for Globus height of Aghdara he died. He was buried in Martyrs' Lane in Baku city.[2] Pursuant to the decree No.495 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated March 27, 1993 he was awarded the name of National Hero of Azerbaijan after his death.[4][5]
