The trade winds are conventionally understood to be a result of the coriolis effect, which pushes both southward moving air in the Northern hemisphere and northward moving air in the Southern hemisphere westward (and vise-versa for Northward/Southward moving air). Thus they are predominantly associated to dominant meridional circulations, such as the Hadley circulation, rather than zonal circulations, such as the Walker circulation. undo
