Wickham (also spelt as "Wicham" or "Wichaema", and in the Domesday Book of 1086 as, variously, "Wiceham, Wicham, Wikham", and "Wic(c)hamm"), lit. "town enclosure". This Old English pre-7th Century term "wicham", from which the majority of the place-names are derived, was used to denote a settlement; "Wic" being an adaptation of the Latin "vicus", and "Ham" being an Old English word, meaning lit. "enclosure"[1]) associated with a Romano-British town. 'Wickham' is an ancient and distinguished surname of Anglo-Saxon origin.

It is a locational surname deriving from any one of the places so called, for example in Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Hampshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. "Wickham" is also the name of a small market town in Hampshire, England, UK.
