About me

My earliest WP edits probably go back to about 2003 or 2004; the first that I can definitely identify was this IP edit 20 December 2005, adding details about Kenneth Baker's education. I started regular editing in September 2007, and I adopted my username in November of that year.

For most of my active Wikipedia years I created or improved article content, generally with the aim of achieving featured status. I also spent a fair proportion of my time reviewing, and served for a while as one of the selector/co-ordinators for the main page's Today's Featured Article. In my early days I worked mainly on creating or expanding polar history articles and biographies, but later broadened my range into classical music (especially opera), literature, politics and history, and topics of broad general interest. I have now semi-retired from active service, but will still be around keeping an eye on areas that interest me, and will work on a few projects which I don't seem capable of leaving alone.

The Gods of the Copybook Headings

[edit]

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Rudyard Kipling (1919)

From the Lyke-Wake Dirges

[edit]
If ever thou gavest meat or drink,
Every nighte and alle,
The fire sall never make thee shrink;
And Christe receive thy saule.

If meat or drink thou ne'er gav'st nane,
Every nighte and alle,
The fire will burn thee to the bare bane;
And Christe receive thy saule.

This ae nighte, this ae nighte,
Every nighte and alle,
Fire and fleet and candle-lighte,
And Christe receive thy saule.
Conclusion of the "Lyke-Wake dirge" (17th century)

Annabel Lee

[edit]
It was many and many a year ago
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived, whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love, and be loved, by me
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love –
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs above
Coveted her and me...
Edgar Allan Poe

The Internationale

[edit]
Arise, ye starvelings, from your slumbers,
Arise, ye criminals of want;
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions,
Servile masses, arise, arise!
We'll change forthwith the old conditions
And spurn the dust to win the prize.
Then comrades, come, rally,
And the last fight let us face:
The Internationale
Unites the human race!
Then comrades, come, rally,
And the last fight let us face:
The Internationale
Unites the human race!

Eugene Pottier, 1871

Dark as a Dungeon (folksong)

[edit]
Come all you young fellers, so brave and so fine,
And seek not your fortunes way down in the mine.
It will form like a habit and seep in your soul
'Til the stream of your blood runs as black as the coal.

Chorus: It's dark as a dungeon and damp as the dew,
Where the dangers are double and the pleasures are few;
Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines.....
It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mines!

There is many a man I have known in my day
Who lived just to labor his whole life away.
Like the fiend with his dope and the drunkard his wine,
A man will have lust for the lure of the mine.

Chorus

I hope when I die and the ages shall roll,
That my body will blacken and turn into coal.
I will look from the door of my heavenly home
And pity the miner a slave to my bones.

Chorus
