ACTION EQUALS HISTORY: A WIKISALON MONTHLY MEETUP
2PM - SUN FEB 26, 2017 FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - BOARDROOM, NEW YORK
In the era of “fake news” and “post-truth,” Wikipedia serves as a particularly useful information model — nonpartisan by design, it's a transparent locus of knowledge maintained by citizens of all ages and backgrounds who build on Wikipedia’s troves of freely accessible information. While it's aim is true, the Wikipedia movement openly acknowledges that racism, classism and gender bias impact the site as they do society in general. This is where you come in.
On the last Sunday of every month from 2-6, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History* — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers with good hearts and open minds to learn more about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia. This is an opportunity for all citizens to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.
For our first monthly event, AfroCROWD initiative will be hosting a Black WikiHistory Month workshop focused on the Wikidata project, improving metadata on African Diaspora biographies and related topics.
Action Equals History guests are encouraged to RSVP in advance. Ace Hotel New York will share RSVP info (name and email) with the Wikimedia NYC, who will ultimately oversee admission.
Note: "Action Equals History" refers to URLs visible when a user views a Wikipedia entry's edit history — e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ace_Hotel&action=history
