Vietnamese English[edit]

Hi,

I would like to know if it would make sense to create an article about English in Vietnam. It's not really about English as a spoken language but more about the way Vietnamese people speak English (common mistakes or pronunciation). Would it be a valid article? Hello, Ericdec~enwiki. As with almost all such requests, the answer is "Yes if the subject is notable", i.e. "Can you find several reliably published sources (presumably books or scholarly papers) which address the subject specifically. A quick look at Google Scholar suggests that you might be able to (though the bulk of the hits are about teaching English in Vietnam, which I take to be a different topic).

Note that what you should not do is write an article about what you think or know: all Wikipedia articles should be entirely based on reliably published information. original research is not accepted. --ColinFine (talk) 15:14, 2 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think that books on teaching English to Vietnamese speakers are on exactly the right topic, since they'll mention areas of particular difficulty for those learners. You might look at English as a second or foreign language#Difficulties for learners, which has numerous references some of which might address difficulties specifically of Vietnamese students of English. I'm against such endeavor. English has had no impact as a colonial language in Vietnam. If you started an article, you would need a new article for mistakes made foreigners learning any language. This is simply not relevant. Moreover, these kinds of articles need scientific studies, otherwise they would look like a compilation of stereotypes and common mistakes.
