Nestor Makhno (7 November 1888 – 25 July 1934) was a Ukrainian anarchist revolutionary and the commander of the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the Ukrainian Civil War. Born into a poor peasant family in southern Ukraine, Makhno became involved in the local anarchist movement and was imprisoned for his activities. Following the 1917 Revolution, he returned to his home town and became a local revolutionary leader, spearheading anarchist resistance to Ukrainian nationalists and the White movement. Upon defeating his enemies in battle, he established the Makhnovshchina, a mass movement by the Ukrainian peasantry to establish anarchist communism in Ukraine, coming to control much of the southern and eastern part of the country. After collaborating with the Bolsheviks to defeat the Whites, his former allies turned on him; he was wounded and driven into exile in 1921. He died in Paris from tuberculosis. (Full article...)

Reasons for nomination: Date would be the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This would be my first FA to appear on TFA. It's listed as a level-5 vital article, but used to be level-4. It has an equivalent article on 61 other language versions of Wikipedia.

Oppose the date, but support otherwise - would be seen as supporting a point of view on the conflict. One we probably all share, but regardless I'd like the encyclopedia to remain neutral on that current event. Abeg92contribs 18:16, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Abeg92: I'm not sure what side we would supposedly be supporting by posting this. Makhno wasn't in favour of either a Ukrainian state or Russian invasion, the blurb even states this. --Grnrchst (talk) 19:33, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, let me be more precise and say it's the side I support and probably not many other folks here do. Either way, in the interest of featuring this soon and giving the moderators an easy option, I nominate March 17th the day in 1910 he received his (thankfully later commuted) death sentence. I'm still not sure what you're talking about. I nominated Makhno for this date because it's an important date in Ukrainian military history and Makhno is an important figure in Ukrainian military history. That's it.
