Wikipedia:WikiProject zeroheight's Amplify series - Women in tech (UX/Design, Engineering, and Data science) Edit-a-thon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Join us as we shake things up for this webinar! Instead of a panel discussion, we’re hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon! In honor of Women’s History Month, we will edit and create pages for women in tech (i.e., design systems, UX/design, engineering, content, data, and more).

Register for the webinar today!

As we increase the visibility of women in tech (UX/Design, Engineering, and Data science)[edit]

For International Women’s Day, the theme is #EmbraceEquity, which inspired us to host an edit-a-thon this month. In an NPR story, less than 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women. Wikipedia is a data source on many things we rely on - from Google’s knowledge panels to what teaches AI systems. When women aren’t represented in Wikipedia, we’re omitted from people’s knowledge and discussion, and our accomplishments go unknown.

Improving content in Wikipedia[edit]

  • Follow Wikipedia editing best practices -
  • Improve the introductory paragraph ("lead section"), which is what most people will skim. This should include the main highlights and summarize the article. Typically they're ~4 paragraphs.
  • Add links to other Wiki articles (e.g., if the person was born in Akron, Ohio, you can link "Akron, Ohio" to its Wiki article)
  • Add categories to the article so women come up in those searches
Women in technology Women in UX Women in engineering [Ethnic/Racial Identity] women (e.g., AAPI women, Black women)
Living people Women in design Women data scientists
Authors Women authors Women technology writers
  • Fix grammar mistakes!
  • Add a photo - this needs to be that belongs to the public domain (e.g., a photo you took and are willing to waive the rights for). This is something we'll probably have to go back and add
  • Add content - review the links to the sources below to see if you can add any information from them to the person's page. Make sure you cite the references to make the Wiki article credible. A few notes:
    • "small mention" is a good starting point for a quick win. The person is mentioned and usually provides validity to their title or company.
    • "podcast interview" - we're not expecting you to listen to the entire podcast. Instead, look for a transcript and skim that for any notable information.
    • "book" links provide information about their book, including publish date, ISBN, etc.
  • Add a person infobox (the box that appears in the top right of the article w/ some basic metadata and their photo)
  • Add external links - including personal website, Twitter account, IMDB profile, etc. Note: some of these are firsthand sources so they can't be used as references in the main article.

Top tips[edit]

  • Don't feel like you have to compose a large, thorough article! Any contribution you make, regardless of size, helps improve Wikipedia.
  • Find tiny things to update - grammar, adding a reference here and there, updating some current info found in a publication, etc.
  • Find something you like editing - maybe it's just adding categories. :)
  • Don't get discouraged if your edits get deleted! (It happens; you can always check the edit history or start a discussion on why.)

After the event[edit]

This is just the beginning and I'd love for you to continue helping on this project. Even editing for 15 minutes or making 1-2 edits is helpful. Feel free to ask any questions on the zheroes Slack community - join zheroes (free) on the #project-editathon channel.

Also! If you're at a conference and see any of these lovely ladies, please ask if you can take a photo of them to add to their Wikipedia article.
