I'm trying out a semi-automated system of finding likely promotions based on average monthly growth factors (for example, this English Wikipedia has grown about 6% per month for the last three months). The list below is based on very unsophisticated (for the moment) spreadsheet calculations. Let's see how this goes, shall we?

Okay, the rest of this section is now being replaced with a more "sensitive" analysis based on 6 semi-periodic checks of the article counts spread over the last two months. (I had already collected the data, but hadn't figured out the most efficient way of analyzing it by the time I posted my last message. My previous spreadsheet calculations — see the monthly "Watched" sections elsewhere on this talk page — were too difficult to update month to month, so that's why I let this section linger for so long without updating it. Now I think I might have a way of tracking article counts that takes a minimum of effort on my part. — But enough about me....)

Finally, a few nitty-gritty details: The given levels of certainty are based on how often in the last 5 checks of article counts (made approximately every 1 or 2 weeks) the wiki grew at a sufficient rate (in articles per day) that, if the rate were continued from now to the end of the month, the wiki would reach its next milestone. If every single time the wiki's articles/day rate was checked it was growing fast enough, then it is said the wiki "will" reach the milestone. If only 4 of the last 5 times showed sufficient growth, then it is said it "almost certainly" will reach it; and so forth. This method is probably slightly biased in favor of saying a wiki will reach the next milestone, but that's better, IMO, than being biased against it. - dcljr (talk) 20:24, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, the mid-size Wikipedias that have these growth spurts are usually due to a bot importing from 2,000 to 4,000 year stubs. An edition that gains about that many articles in one month, even though its usual gain is in the hundreds of articles, is likely growing for that reason. • Sinhalese (si:) will almost certainly reach 5,000 Happened Aug 22. - dcljr
• Western Panjabi (pnb:) will probably reach 20,000
• Sanskrit (sa:) will probably reach 5,000 Happened Aug 5. - dcljr
• Extremaduran (ext:) will probably reach 2,000

The following languages are less likely, but possible, promotions:

• Hindi (hi:) might reach 100,000 Happened Aug 30. - dcljr
• Neapolitan (nap:) might reach 50,000
• Persian (fa:) might possibly reach 200,000
• Hungarian (hu:) might possibly reach 200,000
• Kazakh (kk:) might possibly reach 100,000
• Yoruba (yo:) might possibly reach 50,000

No more monthly milestone predictions from me

For over 6 years now, I've been posting "Languages in need of watching" sections (like the one above) here to help people keep track of milestones that are likely to be achieved each month. Since I'm now tracking daily article counts (and almost all other stats returned by the API), I see no reason to keep making these announcements. I mean, it's not like a milestone is going to go unnoticed anymore, as has been true at times in the past. I don't even know if anyone was really using these announcements besides me. So I'm probably not going to make any more monthly "watching" announcments. Any interested parties who don't already have their own methods of tracking article counts can refer to m:List of Wikipedias/Table (which has been very easy to update for years now) and m:Wikimedia News (which I'm now keeping up to date with "all" Wikimedia content-page milestones, not just for the Wikipedias). I try to remember to update this table as well, but sometimes I forget...
